Eh decided to bring it up since the guy I was addressing was trying to either inject or mock the whole "women can't wield swords" thing that is currently a thing. Perhaps I tried to hard and seemed believable. To me if people would bring up "can't wear photon packs" which he was the first one to do so(here. are people actually trying to claim that elsewhere?), I couldn't see it because there's so many different ways to get around it, several which I listed. There's no logical reason to say they can't be ghostbusters just because of the pack.Vault101 said:

Ah, but of course, it's because it has women in it that makes it gimmicky ... as opposed to the fact that it's a reboot of an old film with its entire marketing based around the fact that they have gender swapped the characters for no reason other than to gender swap the characters.Vault101 said:

The fact that it's a reboot of a beloved classic is already enough to give the film an uphill struggle to endear itself to us, but gender swapping is just makes it even steeper.
Finger's crossed. The original Ghostbusters was a weird movie. I love it with all of my heart. Here's hoping these girls use their skills to make something special. I just can't get in a rage about "my childhood being plundered" anymore. It's just business. I think Ray, Egon, Peter and Winston would be chill about this, tbh. They were always husslin'.

I've liked what I've seen of Wiig. McCarthy... can be good. No, really. She was terrific in Gilmore Girls, and pretty damn funny in The Heat, and I thought she was okay in Bridesmaids. But the likes of Identity Thief and Tammy cause me to suspect that she needs a writer who can give her good material and a director who can find the charming and relatable rather than just the raunchy and gross.

While I was never pinning any hopes on any reboot of Ghostbusters, male or female, I think it's funny that this is adaptation still isn't as hilariously diverse as the cartoon Extreme Ghostbusters:
We have our white guy, also pulling double duty as the one with a disability. Our chick, doubling in for the troubled goth/occult fan. A (I think) Mexican guy, who is also a slacker and the black guy, doubling up as the tech/mechanic.

So we can expect jokes about bodily functions somehow involving ghosts. Perhaps Slimer will fly out of the nose of one of the women and then they'll poop all over each other whilst vomiting. It'll certainly be considered 'comedy' by some people.
Sadly for me, I stopped finding poop jokes funny when I was around 14 or 15, so this film probably isn't aimed at me.
But of course, we are all speculating. None of us have seen the film and perhaps it will end up being one of the greatest movies of all time.
AHAHAHAHAHAHA...I think what I just wrote will be funnier than any jokes featured in the film.
Man I would be on the fence instead of against this if they put Tina Fey and Amy Pohler in if only because I think their pretty funny and would have the chemistry to maybe help this thing do alright but as of right now I don't have high hopes for this movie.

-In 1986, the Ghostbusters phenomena still running high, Filmation made an animated sequel series to the 1975 live action The Ghost Busters for no other reason than to solidify their claim on the "Ghostbusters" title and to try and practically con kids who were still hyped for the movie into watching their crappy TV show.
This was a problem for Columbia Pictures because they also made a cartoon series actually based on the movie, but now they couldn't just call it "Ghostbusters" because of trademarking and because it would have only confused kids even further. Thus the series became "The Real Ghostbusters", just to spite Filmation.

As for this particular movie, I say the same thing I have said several months ago when the news first came out: I would have no problem with a Ghostbusters reboot. I would have no problem with a female cast. What I do find problematic is that this movie pretty much exemplifies the problem with the effects of the whole modern "feminism"/"political correctness" movement.
Just look at it this way: People are clamoring for female protagonist. So what does Hollywood do? Instead of looking out for a good screenplay with a female protagonist they just take a franchise, gender-flip the characters, use it as an excuse for a reboot and then parade around saying "Look! We have not only one but FOUR female protagonists! We are so progressive!", which practically just means "We are pandering to your feminist sensibilities without putting in any effort! If you are part of the movement, give us all your money or you are a hypocrite!"
It's just cold and cynical to the point I find it disturbing.
Nice try, but your strive for women's equality changes nothing about the fact that this is just another 80's nostalgia plunder. Make another movie with an all-female team, but for fuck's sake, leave Ghostbusters alone. The Ghostbusters are Egon Spengler, Ray Stanz, and Peter Venkman (Winston Zeddemore was just a joke character), or more specifically, they were Harold Ramis, Dan Aykroyd, and Bill Murray.
And maybe this is me just not being very intune with American female comedians, but the bulk of their material generally consists of 'Look how out of control we are, eventhough we're women, WOOOAH!' I'm fucking looking at you McCarthy, you're 'obnoxious fat person' routine is old and stale. Replace McCarthy with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and throw in Catherine Keener, and maybe we'll talk... just maybe.
