This story originated from the MDB NOT GoNintendo. This killer person tipped GoNintendo after seeing the story from the MDB.
You should give credit where credit is due!

It's clear she didn't get any motivation at all from the latest Metroid game.

Oh, no no no. Not JUST a daddy's girl. It's WAY more fucked up than that.

Here, read this article. It explains everything.

Wow. That... really shed some light on things. Sure, i noticed a lot of the messed up, un-explained scenes, but i never really thought about it that way. Seeing how poorly written Other M is i'm thinking someone should just write a script and post it online or something(something canon) ...might just do it myself.

OT: Well, i apparently got ninja'd by everyone who pointed out how this will probably go on ignored by the "games cause violence" people so i'll just say this: I'm glad to see things somewhat worked out.

This story is near and dear to my heart since my mom was recently diagnosed with cancer. That's good that she's been able to find something that helped her cope and move on.

It's great to not only see that she changed her lifestyle and coped with the loss of a loved one with the help of an idol from the videogame industry.

She also ended up looking great in tight spandex, though I wish it was the blue zero suit from Metroid Fusion, I know I'm horrible, which is always a plus in future endeavours.

Be happy with your new self and may your mother rest in peace.

Now we just need to wait to see how anti-gaming lobbies turn this round.

I'm going to assume that she never played the Team Ninja Metroid game, or this would not have been possible.

Anyway, major kudos to her.

I think its been established by this point but this story was very sweet and really speaks kindly to the power that video games have to inspire people unlike any other artistic medium.

Oh good for her! I'm glad she found some motivation after something like that. Some people just give up on life.
Of course nobody will focus on this. They'll be too busy telling us how Duke Nukem Forever will turn our children into murderer rapist drug addicts who shall bring about the apocalypse at the hands of Syranth the rape god.
Off Topic: Wha- What are you talking about? Dan Hibiki is my hero! *sobs in corner*

And the media says "Videogames cause nothing but violence".

I say good on her, not just game wise, but for the inner strength to move on.

Whilst this is a great story, and inspiring to boot... How was pre-Other M Samus a better role model for women, exactly? She wasn't a strong female character, she was just a strong thing in a suit with breastplates- unless enlightened women would prefer acting as if robots? I tried that, once. Got me winded when I basically power-walked into a bully's fist, as I was trying to not pay any attention to him.

Not that I like new Samus. Don't get me wrong there, I've read and agree with the above article.

Anyway, it is nice to hear of a regular ol' heartwarmer these days.

I remember when I had a SSB guide book and when I read about Samus in it, it would refer to her as a "her". Being like, maybe 10 at the time, I assumed it was a typo. It wasn't until later when I started playing Metroid Prime when I got a close up of her face when I was like, "Oh wow, she really is a girl. Oh well, she still kicks ass." and kept going. :p

You go girl! :)

Tragic to hear about her dearly departed mother. R.I.P Mrs. Perl

Its good that you found a way to accept the loss and make someting beautiful come out of it all. Im sure your mother would be so proud of you.

Inspiration can be found in the simplest of places. This right here is proof-positive that videogames can do some good in this world.

Wait a minute *checks DA page* Yes, she IS the Samus cosplayer I met on the bus to New York Comic-Con last year. Too bad she already had a boyfriend with her. And yes, when I brought up the subject of "Other M" she said "Don't even speak its name." Harsh.

On the flip-side, here's MovieBob's reasoned and insightful defense of the game: http://gameoverthinker.blogspot.com/2010/09/episode-40-heavens-to-metroid.html

My opinion? Like Xenogears, play it and pass judgement for yourself.

Upon seeing the article title I was extremely scared of what I might see in the comments section, but I was pleasantly proven wrong. :) My faith in the escapist community has improved.

OT: Ms. Perl, if you're reading this, then good on you! I hope you too will be a role model for a lot of people with hardships in their lives. Just goes to show what you can accomplish with a little strength and willpower.

Off topic again: "Welcome to the Dan Hibiki podcast. I'm your host, Dan Hibiki. With us today is Dan Hibiki. Our topic today is Dan Hibiki: Street Fighter, or Streetest Fighter?"

I had to C:

Wow thats quite an explanation.

Other M might've just killed the franchise for me...
Don't let it, but do let it kill Other M's writer's chances of being hired again (although I don't actually think there will be a next time for him anyway).
Err... the writer in question is Sakamoto Yoshio. He's been working with Metroid since the original NES game.

Thing is, all he did before Metroid Fusion was directing. The earlier games didn't really have any writing to speak off. But now he's doing the writing, and he really sucks as badly at that as he does at voice directing.

Yes very very good idea. No need to shock her with how badly they portrayed her. And when I mean badly I mean badly, they turned Samus into a broken housewife thanks you jackasses!

From what I've heard, not played Other M myself, but it's very degrading to Samus. Ruined the awesome bounty hunter image with a daddys girl?
Much much worse Big boss much worse.
