Yeah, "ficional character", that happens to religious people all the time ! :)
You sir, are amazing haha

OT: This is the kind of thing that shows that video games aren't just for kids and are as mature as any film or book.

100 lbs is a lot of weight, that's something to be impressed with on its own. It's just really cool how she looked to Samus as her hero.

And I know this is something totally out there, but she has really pretty eyes.

She looks lovely, good on her. She found her silver lining.

I want to do something similar for my next cosplay, I saw a dress that was adorable just a bit too small so I was thinking of buying it and hanging it up for motivation. I have until July or October so I should be able to do it.

I'm really happy to read this article. First on the fact that this woman was able to get over the depression of her mother dying. It takes a strong will and true motivation to do what she did.

Second, with all the shit that "experts" seem give games, it's nice to read a story where games were actually a motivation and helpful tool to someone. This is just a very happy story all around.

Oh, no no no. Not JUST a daddy's girl. It's WAY more fucked up than that.

Here, read this article. It explains everything.

That really is amazing that she was able to get over the lose of her mother like that. Proof that video games do some good after all, sadly it will get looked over but still. Samus is a great character, one of the few great female leads in games.

She calls Samus Aran her "most powerful source of motivation" and believes the character to be an "ideal role model for many women to look up to as a powerful female icon."

Well that is a nice idea up till Other M where Samus is just a brain dead yammer box.

She looks really good - as someone else said, it's hard to believe she was 100 pounds overweight!

It's also nice to be reminded that fictional works can inspire people - that making this entertainment isn't just spinning wheels.

Aww, this is awesome in a heartwarming kind of way....whats the word for that: Heartawesome? Awesomewarming? Uhh Heart-warming-awesome?

I'm getting off track here....point is, it's good to hear she was able to get her life on track.

....As many others have said before though, lets hope she doesn't play other M

It says on her DA page "Favourite game: Every single Metroid game EXCEPT Other M " so no fuss to be had.
*Cries with joy*

She has reached the final stage of fandom - realizing when the creators have Ruined Things Forever and declaring one or more official works to be non-canon!

Welcome, our sister. Welcome.

Michelle Perl wins the Samson Seal of Approval for standing up in the face of emotional and physical anguish and telling life that She is in Control. This article is made of Win.

You know what? Mass Media will never use this story to show how video games can have a positive influence. Good for her!
Leaves it up to us to share this link with those who think there is only the party line of 'games kill people.'
Spread the word.

Now here's my whole hang up on this.

While I'm glad this woman obviously did something beneficial with her life because of something video game related, you just know no outlets like Fox News will pick up on this. And you know, hey, I could accept that. Its not like i would expect them too.

Now, on the other hand, if she had done this and not lost weight and people saw this, it would be used as the "Video games present a negative a opinion of what women should look like without ever giving any real chance of this" argument. So the whole thing, while motivation, is tainted in the hypocrisy of it and how this will never be viewed as a good thing outside of the video gaming community.

But then again, thats probably just me. But i odnt want it to seem like I missed the relevance or importnace of what happened. I've actually really glad about this happening.

Could everyone just shut the hell up about fox and the news in this thread? Make a thread for that if you've got something to say. Personally I don't really see why any news organization would put this story up.

Samus is one of my favorite video game characters so I think it's pretty cool that someone was able to use her as a motivation to make improvements to their own life.

First I must say, I was hoping not to be a troll and open the Metroid Other M can of worms. But I see that has already been handled sans trolling. :)

Damn, that was a really good article. And I'm glad they mentioned Metroid Fusion in there. Cuz the Adam from that game...seemed like he respected and cared for Samus.
