I'm very curious about that "10 family members" thing. If it's a list that you're making, then that's perfect. You put 10 friends to that list, and they can play all your games, it's even better than giving them the disk.

Okay, it´s cool that i can share games with 10 people (presumeably we can all play at the same time?)
No, that seems too good to be true. No chance MS is allowing that, no chance in hell!

Wow. Originally I wasn't going into next gen yet because I have several thousand hours worth of this gen left to play. Now it's like they're trying to keep me away. Heck, at this rate I'm more likely to go buy a used PS3 to see what all that Uncharted business was all about.
Uncharted, Little Big Planet, Journey and now The Last of Us as well.

If you can find one cheap, it's absolutely worth it.
I'm thinking of waiting until we at least get a picture of the PS4. Some point soon current gen consoles are gonna plummet in price. Heck, I'll probably even be able to afford a new PS3 slim! Also, can't forget Ratchet & Clank. I loved those on PS2.

I'm usually a lurker here at the Escapist but this thread has prompted me to break the silence.

While there are many real concerns and intelligent points raised among the reactionary comments expressed within this thread, I have to say I think a lot of you are a little blinkered amidst the real fury being directed at Microsoft .

The fact of the matter is that Sony and many publishers for the PC platform have been edging towards this same practise for a while now. There's real money to be had by selling us our entertainment as a 'service' rather than allowing us to own our entertainment in perpetuity like we've always been able to up to now. Games are not the only things affected here - TV, Movies, and even Music is following this same line of thinking and if taken to it's ultimate conclusion we will find that as consumers we lose control over what we can do with our entertainment while still paying as much, or even more, than we ever did to use it.

Think Sony is different in this case? Want to jump to the PS4 as a reaction to MS admitting that this is where their strategy is going? I think you should hold your horses because Sony want to pull the same BS that MS have just done (but haven't been brave enough to admit that openly yet). EA, Ubisoft and the like clearly want to sell a 'service' to you too - this approach gives the publishers and providers all the control and allows them to market to you in any way they see fit.

THIS PRACTISE IS BAD FOR ALL OF US AS CONSUMERS

I've been watching the froth and fury over the Xbox One for some time now and have convinced my friends to not believe the half truths and hype. With Major Neilson's announcement I am saddened to see that many of the fears expressed before (and immediately after) launch do seem to be true. I only hope that the backlash this is creating cause Sony and many software publishers to think again about the path they are trying to lead us down. Hell, I hope Microsoft see how unhappy this is making consumers and think again before launch. As cynical as it sounds, however, I don't think this will be the case but that will (hopefully) be their loss.

Now, I've been a big gamer for several decades. I started on the C64 and have played games on just about every platform since. I watched piracy kill the Amiga. I avoided the over-hyped plastic brick that was the Xbox and remained with Sony happily. I watched in disbelief as Sony screwed up the PSN and happily paid for the Xbox live service as a result. I lament what Xbox 360 has become with my dashboard now more advertisement than anything else on a service I ALREADY PAY FOR. I hate having to spend lots of cash on a PC every year to be able to play the latest games because software devs are too damned lazy or put under too damned tight deadlines to optimise their code properly........I love console gaming and want it to continue but this incoming generation makes me fear that the age of no-advertising, pay-and-do-what-you-will, easy access gaming is over.

We as consumers must stand firm against abhorrent business practises and fight to ensure that we get the solutions we want. More than ever before we need to stop bitching, whining and moaning and speak with a unified, consistent voice and tell these businesses in the strongest terms that we DO NOT WANT this sort of thing and will not put up with it for the carrot of exclusives or simply because 'that's the way gaming is heading'. I live in hope that we can reverse this trend because if we simply let this happen and allow all our games to be sold to us as a service, accepting whatever connectivity or payment BS publishers throw at us we will find that there will be no way back to being able to game when you want, how you want on the platform you prefer.

While I wait for more details before making a final judgement, right now I have to say NO to Xbox one.......and I am saddened by that.

Yeah, i watched Angry Joe rant about this just now. An its official, im not buying a xbone. I was on the fence waiting for E3 and the games unveiling but now they have confirmed no rentals. Used games are a thing of the past or just not worth buying. They have a thing where you can digitally download games, but if the arent really cheap to make all the other crap with the console less, then they have just assassinated their own product.

Its the buying everything new thats a major issue. Now this isnt anything to do with us all being poor. Its about the fact 90% of games are not worth the £40 price tag. Especially when when many last about 8 hours. Also because ive no interest in online gaming all the online stuff is worthless to me and adds nothing. So i might buy about 10 games new and i rent the rest. Plus im not a collector and sell them when ive finished with them so that avenue is blocked, or atleast fairly restricted.

If Sony is listening......i know you will do the same or similiar to MS because why not? Im sure you want the same control as MS does. An as MS has done it then it is safe for you to do that now. But please dont. Do what the gaming fans want because it will ensure you sell a ton of consoles.....and really Sony, you really need a big win.

New PS3 slims have already fallen dramitically in price and are looking like a good option for now.

I agree wholeheartedly and wish Sony are listening.

I didn't make this clear before but do we really want to have a gaming platform that's less convenient and less flexible for gaming than we had before? And have we learned nothing from the slow adoption of digital distribution platforms such as the UK market in eBooks? If we buy our content digitally (and therefore cut out much of the distribution costs) why are we willing to pay the same (or even more) for our content than we were paying for the physical media?

Waterstones eBook store and Microsoft Games on demand I'm looking squarely at YOU!

So everything that Sony has to do is say the absolute opposite of what Microsoft is saying and they win the entire console generation. Only an idiot would screw things up at this point.

The Xbox One is an extremely clever ploy to sell Windows 8 by destroying the console market and driving players to PC.

The rumors are true: you must connect once a day in order to play your games. That you bought. What about gamers without that capability? They don't exist. "Every Xbox One owner has a broadband connection," Major Nelson writes
You know, I moved house a couple of months ago, and it took my ISP 5 weeks to connect my service at the new place... and because my exchange was apparently built by cavemen, my connection can only be called "broadband" by virtue of the fact that I do not in fact own a dial up modem.

This pretty much confirms that Microsoft has lost the plot. I have bought every console in the past 3 generations, but as things stand, I have absolutely no interest in having an Xbox One anywhere near my house.

With that said, I can see this "Feature" being patched out really quickly once the sales data reveals that the Sega Saturn sold better than this steaming pile.

And Sony's stocks go up yet again. They don't even have to do anything to be successful by this point.

This is going to fucking far.

I'm almost lost for words at this practice and... just the whole situation.
So, I'm paying £50 to effectively rent a game from them, because there's no market competition because the retailers can't survive and also because the pre-owned market no longer exists, so it doesn't even matter how old the game is because they can charge whatever the fuck they want.
Then, because of how expensive it'll be to make a game for this system, the game will be able 4 hours worth of crap content covered in fancy tinsel and when I want to try and claw back at least something from this crap, the publisher says, "Nope, sorry. Too bad.".
I couldn't have even tried the game out because I can't rent it or borrow it, so no, I'd have to buy it at full price and be completely unable to reclaim anything just to even know what it's like.

On top of that I'm forced to pay extra for their broken wiggle-wiggle controller that I don't have the space to use, nor the need to use, nor can I imagine even ever wanting to use it... AND I STILL HAVE TO PAY A SUBSCRIPTION TO ACCESS MOST OF THE STUFF I WOULD WANT TO PLAY. >:/

And then they have the nerve to treat me like a criminal, to check up on ME to make sure I'M following their nonsensical rules about what console I'm allowed to play the game I bought on, etc. Fuck this.

If the PS4 has even half of this malarkey I wouldn't buy it, and the PC already has a lot of these problems... I... I mean at least the PC is better but... :/
I can't imagine Sony fucking this kind of advantage up... Nobody could be stupid enough to screw up in their situation.

No thanks Microsoft. I don't want a Kinect, never have done. If you let me buy and play the console without the Kinect then I'd be a little more forthcoming.

The 24 hour 'check in' thing doesn't bother me personally all that much but it's still annoying that it's there. It's pure DRM, because there are no real benefits to it.

And that used and shared game thing is gonna become annoying as hell I can tell. Do us a favour Microsoft and get your dicks out of our arses.

Useless crap and restrictions on my legal property. No thank you.

Are there statistics on this? Is "everyone" on broadband now? I live in the UK, and there are still places where you can't get a mobile phone signal, let alone ADSL. I'm assuming that the continental US has enormous areas where broadband is not an option.
I wouldn't know where to begin to look in the UK, but here's how it is in 'murrica. http://www.fcc.gov/reports/eighth-broadband-progress-report The FCC is our federal agency which deals with all types of communication. The TLDR for that report is that in 2012 there were 100 million Americans without broadband. 19 million of which lived in areas where they had no access to high-speed internet and the rest who were not broadband customers for one reason or another. Now that's a third of our population. That's a lot of people who won't be in the Xbone install base and I don't know how any publisher would be willing to trade control over used games for such a diminished reach.

Game developers can continue to expand their games after launch? Yeah, maybe some will, those who really care about the worlds they're making. But those making games for numbers alone? I highly doubt they'll do anything like that without charging for their DLC. What a load of hokum...

why comare it with titan? titan is stronger than any of the console coming out and its unfair comparison. a 430 would be closer perhaps.
I was simply humorously stating that I'd be sticking with PC gaming for the current generation. You obviously can't compare any consoles performance the superior power of an nVidia Titan.
