Veeeeeery interesting.

This whole thread is making me a little suspicious. I mean that Mr Jones guy has posted a zillion times and even quoted my same post twice.

It's also not like the Escapist to immediately shun a game like this. Everyone seems to be treating it as though it's an actual 2D Minecraft rather than just sharing similarities. I'm sure I never saw this much hate for the actual rip-offs like FortressCraft and whatnot.
Because at least FortressCraft was on the 360 so there was kind of a viable reason for its existence.

As I said, you could run Minecraft on a banjo, nail clippings, and a chunk of foreskin, so why you'd bother with a 2D version (virtually every feature is a rip) is beyond me.

Who said it's trying to be exactly like minecraft? They took the basic concept of a sandbox world, making out of blocks, and being able to build and now suddenly it's exactly like minecraft?

Well my PC can't run Minecraft and I know a lot of other people who can't run it.

That game isn't a 2D Minecraft either, it's a 2D platformer with similar mechanics. I saw tons of stuff in that video that aren't in Minecraft and it's not even released yet.

It might not necessarily be good but seriously what's with the kneejerk reactions today.

Looks okay, not quite Minecraft good but it may be fun to play. I'll check it out once it's actually out there.

If I can manage to put up with Minecrafts graphics then this game will be no problem but I'm doubting it's gonna be as creepy since the caverns don't appear to be dark at all.
It's not supposed to be creepy....
Well okie dokey then, I might just check it out when it's out there. Maybe there will be a demo or something.

Isn't Minecraft technically a generational step ahead of this game? It looks like the game Minecraft evolved from, like Mario evolving from the first Mario game into his current 3D iteration.

That said, I don't see much point in playing it, as it seems kinda boring to me.
So super mario 64 is generationally ahead of new super mario bros.?
strictly speaking, no. You COMPLETELY overshot what I was trying to say. I never referenced New Super Mario Bros., I specifically said "The first Mario game".
New SMB has many features and details that make it an enhancement over it's predecessor. I can't speak for it directly, since I only played it for about 20 minutes, but I can imagine it has many features Super Mario 64 didn't have, and vice-versa.
Yes there are games that are on the same level, but you'd be kidding yourself if you said there wasn't a definitive scale of evolution.

Besides, what with the hostile feedback? You asked "what do you guys think?" and I replied with what I thought. Why did you instantly shoot me and my opinion down? I was just saying what I thought.

Yes, apart from the blocks, the block types, the life bar, the inventory bar, the items, the randomly generated worlds and the art style of the caves its completely different.

Granted, there is magic, although that seems to mainly be away to help scale walls, which obviously isn't really that necessary when you're moving in a 3D space.

I grew up with J-RPGs on Famicom and Super Famicom so this kind of art design really grabs me. The game itself looks like fun though,If there's some kind of a dungeon master system then it would be perfect.

Now if you'd excuse me,I gotta finish my giant diamond cock and balls, those diamonds aren't gonna mine themselves.

Why a 2d version?

Well, I like minecraft and have played many hours on it. I'd say it was my favorite game "released" last year (thats when I got it and played it a ton).

It was missing a few things I really like in a game though. I like some form of advancement in my game. I don't know if this 2d version has a level up system or way to increase max health or not, but it looks like it might.

Additional weapons you can get etc would also be nice.

Finally I actually like 2d games like CSoTN better then many 3d games. The combat is often more fun to me and I would really like to see a good 2d version of minecraft. Emphasis more on the exploring, killing and leveling then building....but with building options as well (and crafting of course).

To be honest what I really would like is a very good 2d MMORPG. This new game looks like it might be a step in the direction I'm looking for.

Minecraft meanwhile was a blast, but not enough new stuff has been added recently to get me interested in playing it anymore for awhile. I don't even know if enough new stuff will ever be added to grab my interest again. I built a bunch of great castles/fortresses, explored tons of areas etc and really did everything I want in Minecraft for now. I would need some new way of playing the game, quests, levels, new objects to mine etc to draw me back in.

So for me something that is similar.....but different enough to be fun would be great. I've put in over 100 hours easy and probably over 200 hours in minecraft which makes it not only very worth the price, but also the game I spent the most time playing last year. I'm looking for something new now though.

As far as my post count. I've been posting here for years (4+?)...I just don't post a ton.

I just watched a 4:44 long video that screamed "MINECRAFT PLUS A FEW MAGIC ABILITIES" at me.

Not exactly kneejerk.

And what are your system specs, because I find it hard to believe you know "a lot of people" who can't run Minecraft.

I realize that I fit that description exactly, I'm a lurker by nature, and I felt the same way as you at first (especially because it is Demitri's first post), but Wulfy42 has been around since 2009 I think that that is worth noting. I don't think someone would plan ahead that much.

Welcome to The Escapist.

OT: This does not interest me mainly because the combat seems like just spinning a sword in circles and bumping into things, although the combat in Minecraft is terrible too.

Wha.. What? Nah, i'm only shunning this because it's obviously very inspired by Minecraft, well, why not play Minecraft?

I'll be waiting for a fourth dimensional minecraft.

Maybe it'll be, you know, fun?

2D might be easier on some people's computers, Minecraft is about as optimised as Libya's government. Java + terrible programming = blaarghh fuck your pc

Actually I wonder if minecraft would run on a ds? That would be pretty cool to play in 3d.

It is in 3D, it's an option in the game.

Yeah my join date is actually before his, and I visited the site before that, just always posted on gamefaqs back then instead of here. Took me awhile to actually create an account. Last 2 years or so I have switched over to the escapist as my primary gamer website but never really got into posting that much (usually made FAQ's etc on gamefaqs and never randomly discussed things much).
