Innovations like this are precisely why I like to support indie developers over bloated corporate machines like Valve [http://www.valvesoftware.com/], who just don't have what it takes to come up with this kind of original idea. Good job, Notch!

I'm going to assume you're joking because the only way you could not be joking is if you had never heard of Steam.
Wow. There are a lot of people here who have literally no sarcasm detection abilities, whatsoever.
I can see that it's sarcasm.

im not surprised really, if valve released HL2-episode 3 sooner i think there would of been a significant change in the results.

but sadly episode 3 is not out and portal 2 is in pre-order stage, while notch is carving a legend through "word and mouth" alone.

By the way, there's been an update to the store:
-Code works better on Firefox and Chrome
-Warning Message for carts over 10,000$
-The padlock is still a padlock.

Wow it took me embarrassingly long to realize that that was an April Fool's joke. Thank god it is, though. I would regret every vote I cast in Mojang's favor if that was real.

Nice crack at Valve, but I hope he'll never seriously consider implementing something like this. The in-game store is what completely turned me off of TF2..

Okay, Mojang deserved to beat Valve for this. Seriously, brilliant stuff.

Dammit... I wanted that Greifer's disguise, but the raptor won't let me have it :(

Damn raptors...

Wait... raptors sounds like creepers... they both end in "rs"...
That's because raptors are merely sub-contractors for horses [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.267956-WHY-I-DONT-TRUST-HORSES] o_O

Yes, we're all very *winces* "pleased" (some more than others) that the "underdog" (at this point, I'd hardly consider Mojang an underdog anymore) has triumphed over the behemoth that is Valve Corporation, but a little journalistic integrity never killed anybody.

"The concept of a "Company Store" selling low-priced virtual novelty items for use in a videogame is certainly a fresh one and I think Notch and the rest of the team at Mojang deserve credit for pioneering this new and unique approach to customer service."
When Valve did it, they were money-grubbing whores. When an indie developer does it, it's "fresh...new and unique".

One more thing. "[The] bloated corporate machines like Valve, who just don't have what it takes to come up with this kind of original idea.", you're joking right? PORTAL WAS THE MOST ORIGINAL THING ANYONE IN THIS INDUSTRY HAS COME UP WITH IN THE PAST DECADE AND ANYONE THAT SAYS OTHERWISE IS DAFT! The story, the humour, the characters, the physics, nobody will ever create something so golden ever again. I'd LOVE to see where modern gaming would be today without Half-Life or its many derivatives and successors. Valve reinvented the FPS, created several of gaming's most beloved icons (Hell, they don't call us "The Church of Gordon Freeman" for nothing), and are a powerhouse when it comes to gaming and innovation. But the second they lose to a "indie developer", they're just another faceless leviathan who doesn't care about gaming.

Anyone who says Valve has lost touch needs to replay through Half Life and be reminded of how many things they gave us.

Gaming has completely forgotten its roots, and it disgusts me.

EDIT: OK, so the store was a joke, but was the article?
EDIT 2: Wow, I got trolled.
you do realise that portal was based on anouther game dont you called Narbacular Drop that was released in 2005 and portal came out in 2007
The gameplay consists of navigating a dungeon using an innovative portal system. The player controls two interconnected portals that can be placed on any non-metallic surface (wall, ceiling, or floor). The developers went on to write the critically acclaimed Portal using many of the same concepts.

Wait...

Does this mean if when Mojang crushes Bioware in the finals, Notch will mark the occassion by introducing the option to romance Creepers?

Noooooooooooo!

(On the other hand, it'd be pretty much the perfect definition of a one night stand...)

Creeper: You know, you were fantastic last night. Sssssssssssss.

Just because Valve is a corporate machine doesn't mean they aren't an awesome one with fresh ideas. Also, they are technically indie (not under a separate publisher). Anyway, a tip of the hat to Notch for making one the of greatest games of all time and going so far with it!
