Mom Calls 911 Over Son's Non-Stop Gaming

When Angela Mejia woke up at 2:30 in the morning last Saturday and realized her 14-year-old son was playing videogames in his bedroom despite being told to go to sleep, she marched into his room and unplugged his console. Then, as the inevitable argument ensued, she took matters to the next level: She called 911.

Goodness... if this were an actual offense punishable by law, I would be in a maximum security prison with a lifetime sentance right now instead of chatting with you all amiably.

"Then, as the inevitable argument ensued, she took matters to the next level: She called 911." Since when is calling the police the next step up in family arguments? Again, if this type of thinking were based in reality, most, if not all of my family members would long be in prison.

So she's A) a woman who doesn't know anything about disciplining a child and she's a moron or B) the son got violently angry and was in danger of harming her or himself. Since I don't see anything in the article about him turning rabid...

Now, y'see, she should have just picked up the console and thrown it out the window.

That's parenting.
No that's wasting about $300.

That mom sounds kind of...dumb. Calling the cops on your son b/c he wouldn't stop playing games? Really? And if he stayed up on a Friday night, unless he had something important to do on Saturday, so what?
I'd be more than willing to waste $300 if my child was so intent on disrespecting me.

You've lost if you think money is more important than your relationship with your child. The problem is the child not listening because of the system. Get rid of the system and the problem is on it's way to being resolved.
That's true, but I was just talking about if you wanted to throw it out the window. That IS a waste of $300. Just hide it or sell it lol.
But... but... but...

Flinging it out the window is so much more hardcore.
Indeed it is. Putting it in a giant blender would also qualify as hardcore.

As a parent, I can only imagine what kind of little shit this kid must be and what he puts his poor mother through. She needs to mom up, and give the damn console away to someone, but if she has this much trouble disciplining her son maybe if she did that the kid would go psycho on her. She's probably afraid of him to some degree to let him walk all over her like that.

Also, from the looks of the story, she's a single mom. This kid is just a brat, too bad the cops couldn't take him away for a bit.
New topic: should anti video game parents be on a pro video game forum?

and go.

I knew you were going to say something like that before I even opened the thread. At least these sort of idiots are consistent with their demographic.

Police responded to the scene and were apparently able to talk her son into turning off his PlayStation and going to sleep". "They were just like, 'Chill out. Go to bed'," the boy said.
Greatest police ever.

The funny thing is, however, I mention nothing that would even provoke you to think I am against video games, except for suggesting the mother give his console away. If anything, I am just pro-parenting.
I agree. Shitty parents piss me off. "He won't stop playing his games?!" ...Alright slap the shit out of him and sell them all. My dad would have done that if I had not listened to him. I appreciate everything my father did for me, at the time I wasn't happy but most of the ass beatings I got were justified. Helped put the world in perspective for me. I'm a pretty darn chipper fellow now.

BUT you REALLY shouldn't respond to that person. They are just trolling. I've made the mistake before. You are better off just watching an adult film or reading a good book. Or both if you are good at multitasking.

Is it wrong that I read that and though, "well that explains everything"?
Unless you and I are both wrong, no. I thought the same thing.

Also, "Oh no, he's playing GTA IV at 2:30 in the morning on a Saturday!" My parents have woken up to me playing Fallout 3 and Gears of War 2 at times like 3 AM,on weekends and holidays and such.

Well OF COURSE your church would support you in you deranged anti-gaming crusade, but seeing how this isn't the Middle-Ages that support isn't worth jack shit. As for the kid playing the game more often set regulations, the mother just flipped out.

just because im athiest now doesnt mean i always was, ive gone to church before. and yes, i may hve been pulling stuff out my ass, but that doesnt make the parent einstein for calling 911, the place u call if ur being robbed or having a heart attack, about her son being disobediant. shes 1 out of a freakin million other people having the same issue, they dont call 911.

Y'know, I'm not sure what's worse: what video games allegedly do to children or what they demonstrably do to parents. The worst sort of behavior that a GTA-type game could possibly bring out in the youth is nothing compared to what it does to the adults.

Why does shit like that never happen in my country. And we have no laws or censorship when it comes to video games. Im serious 12-13 year old children play GTA in computer clubs or buy it in stores with NO PROBLEM. Sometimes it pays to live in a country with bigger problems than violence in video games
i know, God bless Australia. But the problem is know there starting to do the censership in Australia as well. As if it isn't bad enough we get a "Dumbed Down" copy of GTA know they censor it. I mean what's the point? If you dumb it down for the teenagers then say they can't have it that's government hypocrasy at work. Government Paranoia FTW

That's what my mother would have done. They didn't really care what kind of games I was playing, but if I was THAT impertinent, disobedient and disrespectful my game system would have been out the door in a flash.
lol once i have kids believe me ill do that, i'll carry that shit up to the roof and throw it off, with a grin of joy to get back at the little bastard, but also tears in my eyes knowing im destroying something awesome

my parents have most likely bought the system for me for christmas a few years back...a.k.a. their money, so they def. would rip it outta the wall for a month and chore my ass to death but not kill the system.

good thing im a work horse machine when it comes to being a "good kid"

911 would tell them of parents who can't get their kids to wake up for school, kids who won't eat their veggies, or kids who won't stop playing games. Half the time, the officers in my area waste their time with parenting problems. The officers are actually told to advise the parent that if he or she can not control their child then social services will have to get involved.

That's not to say all calls to the PD from parents about their children are useless wastes of time. 911 may tell the local pd that the mother is afraid of her child not sleeping. When they head over there, they find the kid locked himself in and ODed on caffeine in powdered form.

from one of the comments on the boston herald:
As a Police Officer in Boston this doesn't surprise me one bit. These are the same people that call the Police when thet don't get what they ordered from a drive through at Mcdonalds. This woman has 4 children (no father) and cant control her own house. I remember years ago going to the same house in Dorchester because a single mom couldnt get her 12 year old out of bed to go to school in the morning. So almost everyday for a month she called 911 and we went to this house, woke the kid up, got him dressed and drove him to school. Ridiculous right? Well that's the kind of stuff that goes on.

She just needs to take the power cable & hide it.

Job done?

Calling the police? She should've been charged with wasting police time.
