According to http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=66904 the movie is a promo made for WB to see if they'll fund it. Honestly?... I think it was a very, very, very wise decision, especially to release it just on the internet like this, completely unannounced. Everyone will be talking about this and with the looks of things it's got a high approval rating. However... I think they should have been quite on whether or not it was a game or a movie for maybe a few weeks... That would have attracted much more attention with people guessing and such.

%100, exactly my thoughts on it. As a fan of the original games I enjoyed the first Mortal Kombat movie... it was good, needed a higher rating than PG-13 so we could see more fatalities but other wise it was good. I also enjoyed the cheese story behind Mortal Kombat and I've enjoyed it all the way up to MK vs DC... however... I just can't see where else they can go with this. I think they've pretty much wrapped everything up, left a few plots open here and there but none are really all that interesting. I think the game it self needs a re-boot along with the movies. I'm going to keep my eye on this.

Also it's worth noting that the direction they are using here is relevant to the 2000's genre. Were every thing is dark and gritty, just like the original Mortal Kombat was relevant to the 80's/90's genre where everything was ultra cheesy. While as this (hopeful) movie seems to be taking the underground fight club and saw film style with the Dark Night/ Batman Begins dark grittiness, the original game took influence from enter the dragon, bloodsport and big trouble in little china. So this new look seems pretty faithful to the concept of the original games but changing with the time to reflect the current trend.

That's not to cash in on the success on the other movies around it but it seems (just like the original games) more like a clever parody of them. The trailer had it's fair amount of cheese (which I loved it for) and even though they were all straight faced... they probably knew what they where parodying.

More on to the movie... I hope if they do take this on, if they decide to change actors... leave Michael Jai White as Jaxx... I think he would be awesome for that role.

I'd have to say this could be great, but damn, please, please don't base a game on the movie.

You know what MK is if you leave out special powers? Pitfighter. Yes, the popular choice in 'worst game ever' lists. Also see 'Street Fighter: the movie' the video game, with a digitized kylie jerking about spasmodically.

Anyone think this could do be as a movie if they called it something linked to MK but not actually Mortal Kombat?

That way they could sell it as just an action/horror movie to the masses while still keeping the MK fans on board?

A lot of cinema goers have been burned by now, and just 'video game movie' will keep them away, however this trailer, even if they just changed the name to MK:Rebirth instead of the full title, might keep the masses unwarned.

To me, it's a similar notion to the big change in the Watchmen movie ( you know the one I mean near the end), in the source material, the original idea could be done, without looking ridiculous, however, transferring it to the big screen would have registered poorly with regular cinema goers. Therefore the change to (what they changed it to), same goes for the fireballs, ice bolts, lightning and energy rings of the original game. Surely, in a game to movie adaptation, is it not character that matters over special moves?

Maybe it's because I was never a huge fan of the games (I do like them though) but the whole lack of magic and whatnot doesn't really bother me. This trailer looks like a step in the right direction. As long as it's a movie, which it probably is going to be. It could be better then PoP even though that's not saying too much.

Also, WHY CAN'T A GOOD STREET FIGHTER MOVIE BE MADE!? Please Hollywood, make a good one. Or I'll burn you down. :D

And the award for best adaption of a video game into a movie goes too.... Well I won't give them the award just yet, but this extended trailer is just sexy!

I really hope this is a reboot movie project, looks like someone hit the nail on the head if this is the direction they are going in.

That is so freaking awesome! I would love to see more of these reimaginings. Loved the idea for Reptile thought that was brilliant.

Surprisingly, I REALLY want to see this, it looks AWESOME! And with my local theater having a cheap price of $8 a ticket for everyone(!) it'll be easy.

I never really got into the original Mortal Kombat game series, so viewing this trailer from that stand point, with no previous expectations and only limited knowledge of the characters, this movie looks like it's going to be fucking sweet!

Well mash my buttons and call me slappy, if that just doesn't beat all.

So far, the one thing that piqued my interest in this trailer was Reptile's background. Pretty reasonable and somewhat believable, in my opinion. But Scorpion as a possible protagonist? Quite unsettling.
Possible, but things could take a swing down left-turnsville. I've always considered SubZero a good guy, myself. This ain't no amateur rig that's for sure. I had he who plays Jax pegged from seeing his face. Didn't recognize she who plays Sonya til Scorpion was about out the door.
This piques my interest but it will only add to my MK fun, not replace the original. Nobody does Shang Tsung better than Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa.

Okay, credit where it's due, despite the fact they missed the point of Mortal Kombat so badly they'd be closer if they fired in the opposite direction, that does look like an awesome reboot of Mortal Kombat.

That said, I loved the mystical element. Don't get me wrong, I'm willing to give this a chance, but I'm just going to say that I loved the magical elements like Shang Tsung.
Considering Reptile managing to survive with all that he was born with, Baraka surviving with self-implanted steel blades in his arms, and Scorpion's unique ocular attribute, how do you miss seeing the mystical in all of that? Not everything has to be CGI and flashy lights. Many movies have succeeded by using subtle tactics as opposed to overbearing special effects. That's one reason I am quite interested in this movie.
All that having been said, the signature violence sure wasn't left out. Yay!

Also will there be Ermac? He would finish off the the 4-Colour-Pallete-Swap-Ninja-Team of Scorpion, Reptile (He's not dressed like it but he is in it), Sub-Zero (YAY!) and Ermac.
