Perhaps the self mutilating bit was more referring to the fact he has two massive blades sticking out of his forearms. I don't know of any one that is THAT commited to their body mods. However that may also be because none of the people I know are psychopathic.
I would definatly agree with that, but it's obviously aimed at all his modifications.

However, there are people that are very commited to modification, amputation of limbs wilfully is rare but unheard of.

then degrading the appearnce would be down to someones perception, but body mutilation is an offensive term in the modified community and like it or not it's a way of life for some people just because we aren't protected by discrimination laws doesn't mean that it's ok to insult us because of life choices we have made.
I think you should chill a little bit there. I'm sure anyone who has "modified" their body willingly is well aware there are a large amount of people who would look at it as mutilation. It isn't like people are trying to offend you by saying it, it's just the way people feel when they see those pictures. And I don't see anyone discriminating, unless you think having an opinion is automatically discrimination without any actions to back it up.

By virtue of how awesome that looked, I'm willing to forgive the completely messed-up storyline. Hell, I'm even willing to forgive giving Baraka dreads. This looks AMAZING.

Holy shit. I never thought they would come out with a decent Mortal Kombat movie. This puts it into a completely new perspective and I must have more. PS: Liu Kang better show up or I'll kick fuckin' puppy.

We are all aware that people look down on it but that shouldn't stop us from trying to excepted as people who live differently, the discrimination bit was used to proove a point. It would be against the law for you too insult someone because they followed islam or were catholic I feel the same should apply to modified people, for some people it's just a fashion accesorie but for others it very much is a way of life and seated in very powerful emotional and spiritual circles.

Didn't the first Mortal Kombat have some great advertisement that made it a hit even though the movie was pretty silly and even more so stupid? Just saying, an advertisement department can make anything look good.

Yeah, but videogame concepts and mechanics don't translate well to the big screen. Just look at the loads of crap that are the previous MK movies.
Or practically all other game movies, for that matter.
The first MK movie wasn't really that bad. Yeah, it was cheesy, but it was also the 90's. A lot of action/sci-fi/fantasy spliced movies in that age were pretty... bad.
The second MK movies, was just a bad idea all around. The actors were a huge problem, but so was the concept.
The TV show, MK Conquest, was pretty cheesy too but it had some good ideas.

With the types of effects and CGI that can be done today, a much better MK movie (that sticks to the original plot) could be made. Problem I see, is that of 'CGI fest, plot doesn't matter' and the franchise would take an even harder nose-dive.

They tried to milk it for as long as possible, but they went too far (with the games) and now people are just tired of it.

As for this new movie... eeeeh, it looks interesting, and is more literally 'Mortal' Kombat. But it doesn't have the same feel. To me, there is a heavy element from the SAW series to make it more appealing.
EDIT: Someone mentioned Watchmen in another post... and I very much agree that this has a Watchmen feel (a movie that I didn't like that much).

Mystery Mortal Kombat Trailer Will Blow You Away

A new live-action Mortal Kombat [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mortal_Kombat] trailer is making the rounds and while we're not sure what exactly it is, we do know that it's absolutely frikkin' awesome.

In January, a rumor floated to the surface that the 1995 action flick/videogame movie pointed out [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0113855/], the MK franchise used to be big stuff but it's not 1995 anymore and gamers these days just aren't interested.

Here's a heads-up, kids: Get ready to get interested.

This is not your father's Mortal Kombat. Dig it: No supernatural gimmickry, no undead warriors, no Outworld, just the most dangerous of humans gathered together for a deadly, underground tournament. Reptile: A psychotic, hideously deformed cannibal. Baraka: A self-mutilating plastic surgeon and psychotic mass murderer. Johnny Cage: Savagely beaten and killed while working as an undercover operative. Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Shang Tsung: The gang's all here, but not as you know them.

You might recognize Sonya Blade [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0925227/], too.

In all honesty, we have no idea what this is all about. A promo for a new movie? A live action trailer for a new Mortal Kombat game? Something else entirely? We don't know. We only know this: Holy crap, we want more.

For all you nostalja ridden dicks sayng this is not mortal kombat go fuck an NES or somthing maybye itl open your minds. Welcome to the future baby. OT: I think it's a game mybye a homage to the origanle (wasnt the actions filmed or somtin) I do not no for I am just a lowly 14 year old :(
So, because it's the future we have to like it?
That's as bad as the 'nostalgia ridden dicks' you try to bash.

It's simple, some of the fan-base likes the older elements and mysticism of the original game/story, some like having a more modern and 'believable' take on it.

Stop trying to bash nostalgia when you're just as bad in your defense of the future.

Where do you live where you can't insult someone's choice of religion without facing legal consequence? At least where I'm at, in America, that would not get you thrown in jail. It is perfectly legal, albeit rude to insult religion, hell, watch Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO one of these days. Keep trying to be accepted, that is your right as an individual, sure, but if I go around dressed in all black with a cape and a top hat I wouldn't frown upon people giving me funny looks or insults, if I was wearing it by choice. It isn't anyone else's problem that the "modifiers" believe it is a "way of life".

Maybe you should have a little more respect for the opinions of others, it may open your mind.

Am I the only one who thought the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie wasn't bad? I am not saying it was particularly good and it certainly was cheesy as hell, but it had good production value and it did well at what it was intended to be, a decent action flick. The sequel, on the other hand, was horrible on all levels...

Anyway, this movie seems to essentially be a more realistic reboot of the original. I actually really like the trailer. That said, trailers sometimes tend to be quite misleading, so we need to wait to see how the actual movie pans out.

Regardless of how it turns out, however, I guess it is time once again for...
