It's a simple, some of the fan-base likes the older elements and mysticism of the original game/story, some like having a more modern and 'believable' take on it.
Stop trying to bash nostalgia when you're just as bad in your defense of the future.

I walk into a pizza hut waiting to pick up my pepperoni, and see an old mortal kombat cabinet. I don't bother reading the page long character backstories. It's always the same, derivative supernatural plot that focuses only on establishing the characters you use. I pop in a couple quarters, pick Scorpion and start beating the shit out of everything.

Anyway, that is the point I'm addressing. The fact the original game had magic and mysticism seems part of the reason why the 'nostalgia' goers like the original idea of the MK movie/franchise as opposed to this (highly unrealistic as opposed to plausible realism) new take on it..
I'm one of them, but then again since this movie feels like it has elements of SAW or Watchmen (neither of which I liked) I'm not too excited about this movie. Does it look interesting? Yes.
Am I going to see it? Doubtful, highly.
Take out the Mortal Kombat name and character references, and I still wouldn't be interested in it because the story seems boring (you could say that about the original game, but it's the magic and such that I enjoyed and made it different).
I guess I'm just tired of all the 'freakish looking people based in realism, most-of-which have turned evil and have a high knowledge of martial arts and/or fighting abilities'.

As for the reboot itself... I actually don't have a problem with it. I've never played Mortal Kombat, but from what I see on Youtube, the franchise was really getting a bit silly, so they're in need of a reboot. As for the supernatural elements? Jeez, can't you wait to see how they'll get that done?
I'm behind this project a lot; it's a good way to reboot the MK franchise.
