Ninja Theory Defends Dante Redesign [UPDATED]

Most of what I'm getting from the fans of the series can be summed up as "THEY CHANGED IT NOW IT SUCKS! NO ONE SHOULD EXPERIMENT WITH NEW IDEAS EVER! EVERYTHING SHOULD STAY THE SAME!"

Get over yourselves. The total amount of footage of this game amounts to one trailer. Of course the design looks silly now, it's been taken out of the context of the story and why the hell he looks like this. The developers have done a good thing in experimenting with the design. At least by experimenting it shows that they actually care about the game and aren't just looking to make a quick buck from a clone of one of the older games. They've taken a risk in changing the design of this character, and all they are being met is cries about how the fact they changed it. All this does is send a message out to companies that innovation is a bad thing to do since all you are met with is people saying how stupid it is before they've even seen whatever the new thing is within the context of the game.

I like to think of the new redesign like this.

Here's something funny: on the Ninja Theory forums, someone posted a redesign idea for Dante that looks quite a lot more true to the original character and fits in with the more "modern, gritty" tone this game pursues.
Hm, have a link to that picture? Curious to see what it'd look like.

And pretty much everything I want to say, has been said. The reason behind the design is weak, as it seems more apparent that the guy fashioned this "dante" after how he'd want to look like if he was in a game, then threw in some silver shock in the back of the head.

Its not just the clothing though, but the general build that seems completely different. I'll give the game a chance, but I am hoping to god there is a "Dante" costume in this game, like the other games would have, that changes his look to the old. Though, if they fail the gameplay aspect of DMC, then I wouldn't waste my time.
Here's the link. Check it out. I'll wait. [http://www.ninjatheory.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3219]

You back? Do you see what I mean? It's actually pretty good. It's a more modern, realistic take on the character that still retains a level of flambuoyance and snark consistent with his original characterization. And it isn't insulting.
Yeah, its definitely a better balance of the older, well-known design and the horrible look of this new one. Doesn't look nearly as gaunt (might just be how its drawn), doesn't have that weird little... flip... in his hair. I'm not in total agreement with the Dante crest on the sleeve, as that personally seems a little unnecessary, but otherwise better.
Actually I think that character redesign looks abit too similar to Nero in my opinion.
... You're hurting our case with statements like that, y'know.
Nero was designed specifically to look like a young Dante and Vergil combined.
This is a VERY different design choice than what they went for with Nero.

What's funny is that DMC2 was panned for making Dante less fun where DMC3 was celebrated for his return to form. Then DMC4 is scorned because the focus is on someone that isn't Dante for most of the game. Honestly, the lesson I would've learned from that is that the fan-base loved Dante and Dante, as he was, should be the focus of the next game. Look what they did. Yiu just can't trust Capcom to make sound decisions. If this change goes well in Japan, I fear we may never get a return to form for DMC. It'll be one of those series they never finished... like Megaman Legends.

I don't get it. If everything is different, why not just scrap the 'DMC' and 'Dante' instead of potentially ruining a franchise?

I think he should look like a 70s First Blood sort of Rambo-like character but with a M249 SAW and a Bowie knife as secondary weapons, but thats just me.

Meh, I'm finding it easier than I thought I would to look past the design change. If anybody is suddenly going to completely disregard the game over a change in design without out even playing it once then they can't really call themselves fans of the series now can they?

The main thing I'm pissed about is that after all the hints at some cool mystery-type question and all the questions regarding Nero at the end of DMC4, they decide to go back and do ANOTHER origin story.

Surely I'm not the only one who wants the damned established questions to be answered? Actually...don't answer that, I already know I'm never the only one.

I trying to decide whether this wave of protest is pettier than the one that came up when Windwaker was first shown. But at least that was a change in art style. This is just a haircut.

I respectfully disagree. I think most fans just enjoyed the visual ascetic that "Classic Dante"(hahaha) had because it went so well with the characters personality. I don't think fans have much issue with characters getting visual updates or changes so long as the changes are well done. Look at Spiderman for example. He has several visually pleasing alternate looks. Spiderman Noir(Iron Spider-Man,Scarlet Spider, the Symbiote costume) all of those are good examples of how you can take the same character, put them in a totally different setting, change the look, and still have it jive well with most fans. Dante as interpreted by Ninja Theory fails to do this.

*After reading the updated info*

So... you changed Dante because James Bond did...

First the british flag, them the punk jonkie male-prostitute look and now this?

Repeat with me, Dante is NOT british. Want to make a british superhero? fine, start from beggining, but dont whore a character with a big fanbase.

I'm not going to talk about the new GRIMDARK look and the lack of CRRUAZY. Those things have been talked enouth, but i'm still worried for the whipsword.

Look, I don't like the new design...But as long as the game doesn't play like God of War, and continues to play like DMC, I'll be happy.

Also, new music?

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!

The shitty music of the fights in DMC always annoyed me.
The only DMC with cool battle music was the first game, and maybe the third, the second and forth were just plain annoying and generic.

OT: Really looking forward on this game, I like the new style and I was thinking the exact same thing Ninja Theory said, it's an origin story, so don't hold to your breath just yet... I said it before and I say it again, if it's for the white hair everynoe's whinning about, then he may suffer a traumatic transformation where he gains his fully fledged demonic powers and he gets his hair white (something like what happened near the end of Yuyu Hakusho).

Update: It seems that one of the new things that has inspired Dante's redesign is the recent reboot of the James Bond series. Speaking to Eurogamer [http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2010-09-22-new-dante-inspired-by-james-bond-reboot], Jones said that the new Dante was a rougher, more inexperienced version of the character than in previous games, much like Daniel Craig's character in Casino Royale.

"When you see the Casino Royale remake," he said. "You see Bond before he's actually killed anyone, and it's a really traumatic event. He's rough-hewn, he's not polished or debonair, but you can see the essence of what that character will become. That's what we want to do with Dante. The core of him is there, it's just a rougher version. It's a becoming. He's not fully actualised."

I think they're clutching at straws at this point. They might as well keep quiet and let their product speak for them on release. Casino Royale is a completely different situation, as it was the first book and it made sense that Jimmy Bond was like that.

However while it's fine that this is an origins story, we've already got Capcom on record saying they wanted to appeal to a western audience. They just want to break the west, and this design proves it.

I don't think the main problem people are having is the change itself. The issue is that the change looks fucking stupid.

Thank you.

At what point did we as Devil May Cry fans state that we want absolutely no change from game to game?

Seriously, I don't mind change if it's positive but nearly everyone hates the new design. To be perfectly honest I'm more concerned with the fact that they are a shitty developer. I would really hate for Devil May Cry to die like this. At least we have Bayonetta.
