My mum and dad LOVE the Wii, they play it all the time and are better than me at half the games! So yeah, this report does not surprise my at all, really.

I have a Wii, PS3, PSP, and a PC. Most played is by a large degree the PC (neither the PS3 or Wii have been plugged in since the storm that hit a few days back.
Of the consoles, the Wii does nothing but the rare romp in SSBB with friends. The PS3 does all the solo work (which I've done a LOT more of than Brawling). PC is for the fallback games when everything else gets boring. PSP is the recent purchase which is getting a lot of use at the moment.

Well. That explains all the underaged kiddies online on the PS3 and the X-Box.

I love how people in this thread keep saying "But but but -insert excuse here about why Wii is on top and not their console of choice-"
Indeed.

I also like how a good chunk of people here immediately starts flaming Nintendo because of their inexplicable and stereotypic reasons (I.E. They are too fat and lazy to actually search for any good games themselves) and subject into a hollow belief where they make ridiculous claims to make their overgrown egos feel better.

It's like watching a 3-year old putting his fingers in the ear going "la-la-la Can't hear you!" when being lectured. It's so immature that it's almost impossible not to watch and get amused by it.

Therefore, it seems that good chunk of people on this forum are as respectable and rational as that 3-year old. What an annoying kindergarden this turn out to be.

Still, my opinions on the topic? Deliciously ironic

It doesn't surprise me that Wii is owned and used more than the HD consoles.

I think that the data is not presented in a very honest way. Firstly it has no information on PC gaming which is by far the most popular form of gaming if you look at it in all of it's forms. Secondly it doesn't show the HD platforms combined which it should really as the two consoles are pretty much interchangeable for many purposes.

For a game like Guitar Hero that is available on all three do we see the same shape in the graph? I think that this would tell us something important.

I'm not surprised that Wii is a more desired item than the iPad for many people. The Wii is a fun entertainment device with a broad appeal while the iPad is mainly attractive to a smaller group who are over represented in media groups. It's almost more of a fashion accessory than something useful. Like an expensive handbag for men with too much disposable income.

So?

That doesn't mean they're asking core gamers.

I bet that a similar number of adults also play games on their PC - that could just as easily mean they're playing Solitaire as opposed to TF2 depending on who you ask.

I think they'll find the reports of "traditional gamers" who bought a Wii then sold it on a few months later (or let it rot in the corner) are accurate.

The thing is though that most "Hardcore players" usually have more than just one console. Personally I have all three consoles, PSP and a DS. This means that my playtime will be split between all of those consoles.

My brother and his wife on the other hand only has the wii, and will of course play it more than I play my PS3 or Xbox.

All in all this is just Nintendo trying to make their epeen look bigger. Sure their machine is selling like hotcakes, but that is because its currently a gimmick.

For me Wii was the last Nintendo console I will bother getting Arm flailing is not the future of gaming, at least not for me. Its a fun as a party trick, but its not something I do to relax.

With the Move and Kinect on its way I am truly fearing for the future...

he clearly misunderstood: if you are talking about the kind of gamer likes x/something that doesn't have to do with fitness. that graph goes for people who are only interested in the wii as fitness machine/puzzler device then those aren't the people saying it
it would be interesting if he broke down the statistics, but thats too much to ask

So true, every time someone says the Wii has hardly any good games and is all shovelware (people say that a lot surprisingly, or I guess unsurprisingly on this forum) I will make a massive list of Wii exclusive games (and maybe a few non exclusive if you count metroid prime trilogy and Zelda Twilight princess) and the number of good games on the Wii outweighs the number of good games on other consoles. Yet they always come back with some sort of excuse, I guess people hate being proven wrong or are too stubborn to accept that the Wii actually doesn't suck because if they did they wouldn't be "hardcore" anymore.

Eh? Caster? I'm afraid I don't seem to get that.

Riiiiiiight Reggie! You keep telling yourself that and maybe one day it wont be complete and total bullshit. Hell if you have enough money you can find a survey company that will find numbers to prove that the majority of the population prefer to worship dung beetles over any single organized religion. Case in point numbers can be bought and paid for.
Do you really, honestly believe Nintendo would pay for something like this? Really? This would be a waste of money if they did, as it has little to no financial benefit for them.

I can see this statistic being true when the gameplay time is set to low.

I'm not saying it needs to be 15 or 20+ hours to count as true gaming, it doesn't really matter. I'm just amazed that Nintendo has to manipulate their statistics so much to try to convince people that they're not totally skimming by on the backs of shitty, poorly made casual games.

I've pretty much lost all faith in Nintendo at this point. I'm not one of those "hardcore" gamers that people claim to bash the Wii for not having graphic violence and gore, but I am a person who grew up in an age where Nintendo released great games all the time, third party development was strong and people weren't taken for idiots who need to be coddled with mini-games.

I own a wii. I received it as a birthday gift and thought I'd never use it. It came with Wii sports and Wii Fit. I remember asking why I didn't get a play station when I opened the box and saw the Nintendo logo, I didn't mean to be ungrateful, I was just shocked. Why would someone buy me, a pc gamer, a console I didn't ever think I'd want?
Then I found out there were games I would actually play on it like Rune Factory Frontier (you get to stab unicorns and fairies in it for gods sake, who wouldn't love it?) and I proceeded to put more than 500 hours in on 2 titles (neither of the ones the console came with).
So, being a 30 year old woman, I'm part of the group that doesn't let the console gather dust.
Though when Dragon Age came out, I admit I went back to just PC gaming for a few weeks.

most people that are under this study didn't grow up with video games and tech,
Maybe not with a computer or console in most homes but gaming has been widely available since 1971, Those of us approaching 35 are both adults and highly exposed to gaming and you know what?
Those in their fifties have a pretty good exposure too, my dad may remember the day arcade machines first turned up in his local pub and he may consider them as a distraction and not appreciate how they could be a hobby but he plays likes playing and has been playing games on and off for a much of his lifespan. Are those above retirement what you call adults?
Here is the thing, gaming didn't really become very wide until the playstation era. Before that it was a tightly contained geek culture, like comics before Watchman. Nobody other then geeks played games that much.
