Why can't the US nuke North Korea? If they initiate it, NATO and the UN will stand behind the US if we retaliate.

The People's Korean Army (Or whatever it's called, it's something to similar effect, although knowing Kimmy she'll make it the Great Leader's Army or something at some point) is the fourth largest standing army in the world or some similar large figure. Thankfully they have no allies at all, but it would be long and bloody if things finally came to war.

P.S. Everyone seems to be forgetting that N.K.'s nukes *probably* can't reach America. So they will be looking to nuke either S.K. or surprise everyone and try and dick on Japan.

North Korea comes with these claims all the time just so that they doesn't get forgotten, and even if they would send some nukes they would be destroyed in a matter of minutes, I don't think that even North Korea is that crazy that they would send nukes...

Except the delivery system...

That's the thing, it's not like you can just have a nuke and throw it at someone anymore. You need a delivery system, a cruise missile or something. Then you need it to be accurate. Then you need it to not malfunction. And those are the hurdles that almost every country who claims to have nuclear weapons can't seem to get over. It's kind of a joke, actually. ICBMs went obsolete years ago, and now the only way to reasonably nuke someone is to use a cruise missile that travels really close to the ground, with a tracking system way too sophisticated or expensive for most countries to be able to produce it.

If Kim Jong Il knows what's good for him he's not going to make good on his threats. They aren't the only country with a nuclear arsenal after all, and his population is a lot more concentrated. Frankly I think the US government should just keep on truckin', giving that wackjob a damn thing is only going to make him bolder. Appeasal didn't work against Hitler, it's not going to work against Kim Jong.

I just hope the democrats have the cahones to not be bullied by a country that can barely feed some of it's population while the majority goes hungry.

Well, you see, it's like this. There's a trick to attacking first. You gotta provoke your enemy. Taunt them with stereotypical insults and whatnot. Then if they don't retaliate, you set up a situation, something like a civilian cruise ship in or around their naval territory. When they sink your "battleship", stop the presses! Announce the tragedy on the news and boom! You've got an incentive.

Well, I'm siding with the U.S. and S.K. on this one, purely because N.K. is fucking stupid.

Though I'm worried that a war wouldn't work very well. China and N.K. are known to be allies(as far as I know) so a war with N.K. might just be the chance China is probably looking for to rise above the U.S. and become a true superpower. Also, I'm a little worried about the truth behind the whole blowed up ship thing. If I remember 9th grade history correctly, they used this same excuse to get truly involved in Vietnam (Gulf of Tonkin Incident --> Gulf of Tonkin Resolution --> Hundreds of thousands of troops in Vietnam instead of a few thousand military "advisors"). I believe the Gulf of Tonkin incident was then prooven to not actually have been North Vietnam's fault. Same thing with the Spanish-American war. One of our ships blew up, we blamed it on an attack, later found out that it was just a bad fire that blew up an engine or something. America needs to get more creative with it's excuses to shoot people.

This feels like the Cuban Missle Crisis all over again.

I just hope it doesn't come down to it, I don't have a geiger counter, let alone all the right equipment for a post nuclear disaster.

To pull something like that off, you'd need some kind of weapon that could launch nukes and remain completely undetected... I'm thinking METAL GEEEARRR!!

Seeing that noone came with a explanation on why things are the way they are today i'll give it a try.

Why is korea divided ?
Initially Korea was a japanese colony before the second world war. When the war ended japan lost their sovereignity and korea was on it's own.
America saw that russia wanted to move south through korea and then made an agreement with russia to divide korea in two halves.
One russian side (todays north) and the american side (todays south). Russia felt this was acceptable and pulled out of korea after making Kim Il-Sung the new leader of this land.
America on the other hand left soliders at the new border but withdrew most of their forces.

After some time with nagging on china and russia, Kim Il-Sung wanted to invade the south to reunite north and south. But Rrussia didn't want anything to do with this since the americans was pressent at the border (they did however contribute with small amounts of soliders and equipment). China on the otherhand gave in to Kim Il-Sungs idea and joined the party.
That is how the korean war started !

Kim Il-Sung got pushed back into north korea and later died. His Son Kim Jong-Il then took control and we have todays situation.

Seeing how the Junche religion of north korea affects the people i would definately support america and south korea.

If they shoot a flare at us, the entire stockpiles of nuclear weapons are all going to be aimed at them, the nuclear subs, aiming, the silos on islands, aiming.

If they launch a missle, shit's gunna get blown up to dust. now as long as i get a console, god mode, and codes to the weapons from fallout 3, and a vault, ill be A-OK.

I beleive that North Korea is going to be a 'threat' regardless of any action, or lack thereof, the west takes. If it wasn't 'Military Exercises in our waters' then they'd find something else to threaten America about. In the end, they are alot weaker than they beleive themselves to be. North Korea will continue to flex what little muscle they have until one of two things happen. Either the US will make a ridiculously overblown pre-emptive strike which will start a massive war, or the Korean people will revolt against their corrupt govornment and the counrty will descend into a bloody civil war. If anyone starts an international war, it will be the Americans.

In the end, threatening America or any of its allies with war is a stupid thing to do. North Korea is not a respected counrty in the east, and in any kind of war, they would find many of their border countries siding with the Americans.

As far as I can see, North Korea wants to let itself think that it is still a major world super-power. Unless someone at the top is utterly batshit bonkers, nothing will come of these threats. And that applies to both North Korea and America.

Here's the thing: China would not dare interfere. They know that they are basically supported by exports to the US. Besides, their 300 nukes can't really compete with the US's 2k+.

Normally, I'd side with the US, but I've lost a heck of a lot of trust in them since the child porn scandal in the Pentagon.
yeah... thats the point i stopped taking your opinion seriously. you are going to judge a multinational international crises and possible war and then decide who to support because of some b-level news story?

so in the BP oil slick incident i take it you are picking the side of BP to support becuase the american's toilets swirl counter clockwise?
