I really hope someone will be able to help me find a game I used to play on my PC as a kid. Think 2000 or 2001, plus or minus a year or two.
From what I can remember, you played the role of some kind of investigator. I can't remember the plot, but I have faint memories of it either being a murderer who escaped from prison or someone who stole some piece of art from a museum. Either way, he had now disguised himself and was hiding somewhere in the world.
You have to travel to different locations around the world to find him. On each location, you would be presented with a crowd of people, and the criminal might or might not be somewhere in this crowd. If you think you saw him, you had to click on him. Two places I can remember were in the game are Nuuk and Sydney. In the background there would be some generic landscaping from that location. For instance, in Nuuk, there was snow and ice and someone passing by on a sled of some sort.
If your guess was correct, you had to complete some type of challenge in order to "catch" this criminal. The only one I can remember, because it scared me so much when I was little, was a bomb you had to defuse. You were given a choice of 3 or so wires and had to cut the correct one. If correct, game over, if wrong, loud boom and you had to go to a new location as the criminal escaped.
Someone else I asked told me about the Carmen Sandiego games. I have looked at them on Youtube, and while the concept of traveling is similar, it's not the game I am thinking of.
