Meh, it could be fine. Sure, Legolas isn't in the book, but reasonably he would've been around with the other elves, and at the battle of five armies. If he's just making a couple cameos at those points I don't see a problem, assuming it's kept reasonable. Then again... Peter Jackson. No way he'd keep it reasonable.

If it's just Bloom coming back as a different elf, I can deal with that. If it's him coming back as Legolas, I think part of my childhood just died. But then again I'm a bit obsessed with The Hobbit.
As I said to someone else:

Step 1) Read above posts.

Step 2) Read Novels.

Step 3) Place your fingers together in an open palm position and apply to face.

I'm fine with this as long as Legolas isn't joining the Dwarfs in picking up Bilbo at the start.

I demand that the goblins get a musical number though, if there isn't one i'll be sorely dissapointed.

Fair enough, point to the part in the books where it says Legolas was there during the events that Bilbo took part in. Go ahead, I'll wait.

Is it possible to write him in without destroying canon? Yes. You could do it reasonably from many different situations or possibilities. But on the other hand it just doesn't feel 100% right to me. But that's just a gut feeling, Jackson could probably pull it off fine, but it will still feel off to me seeing Legolas there.

Hrm...

A: Halflings blow
B: Ranjas suck
C: Peter Jackson was a "Right place, right time" director and this feels like his last chance at a paycheck.

I ... might... watch it, but dont color me excited about this even existing, cause it sounds really bad. Adding Orlando bloom back in as a cash in... just makes it seem worse.

why? i mean i'm not super pissed about it, but fan service generally isn't a good sign.

when u give into the fans, bad things happen. especially when you have to break cannon to do so.

this is especially pointless.

I think ive read quite a few inaccuracies about lord of the rings and legolas' character in general from posters on this thread. If characters like Tom Bombadil and Glorfindel can be written out of the Lotr, I can forgive adding Legolas to boost sales.

Okay, Legolas is from Mirkwood, one of the 'big moments' from The hobbit, involves the elves of Mirkwood, I don't see how having a possible cameo of Legolas is going to be such a game breaker.

Now I could be wrong and Jackson might actually be "OMG ruining teh series!" But he has a lot of goodwill built up for me from the LOTR Trilogy, so I'm willing to give him this one.

I didn't take his statement as meaning that Legolas himself will be in the film so much as that we'll be seeing Orlando Bloom. But okay. I'm sure the elitists will freak out no matter what is done, so might as well go big or go home in this case?
Yeah, because it's totally elitist and stupid to expect that a book you love not be totally rewritten for an obvious cash-in. How dare we?

Really, this is going a bit far. I get that he thinks Lord of the Rings was good. And it was. I'll be the first to admit that. But do we really have to totally rewrite the damn book?

its not really fan service placing Legolas in the court of his father who is a major character. its eminently logical and just isn't mentioned specifically in the books because the Hobbit was written before LOTR and Legolas creation as a defined character.

now if they do much more than that then yes it's fan service.
ah, forgive me, the hobbit was the only book in the universe i read. i got about halfway through the fellowship, but got bored shortly after gandalf took down the balrog.

If they put Legolas in they have to put Gimili in. Legolas isn't really enjoyable unless he has Gimili there. The two balance each other out nicely.

It's unnecessary, but poetic license and all. Just as long as he doesn't try to shoehorn too many people who don't belong.

Please, let it just be a cameo. I'm not sure the LotR fans are going to stand for much leeway as far as artistic license goes.

I'm glad this movie handles the intellectual property with such tact, grace and respect. This isn't a terrible decision at all. I'm so glad that Peter Jackson is shoehorning in people who have no place in the film for no reason.

Could work out, I mean in the story his father is the king of mirkwood and he's only not there because Tolkien probably hadn't came up with him yet. Not a big fan of Bloom here but story wise. No not a big deal.

I don't think that this will hurt the story at all. It probably will not add anything to it, but I don't think that it will take anything away. I wouldn't mind seeing old master Tom myself....

Uh, I think we can trust the guy who made three of the best fantasy movies of all time. The LOTR movies weren't always faithful to the books either but they worked great as movies.
