Time for my In depth Review:
The Game "Satan's Retrievers" Starts out promising enough with a cut scene from Game Dogs (Don't care what number episode it is). The cut scene promises me a frozen hell, pedobear at some point, penguins at some point, and that our hero (Or Anti-Hero if you will) will look very much Satan-esque. However, the big shocker is that none of these things come true.
As I have stated before, I was hoping more for an 8-Bit Overhead shooter, much like Fester's Quest (But better) from the NES. Instead, we get a 2-D shooter. The imagery is nice enough: All the characters in game look like they were Clay Animated, which I must say feel's nice and a bit unique. The background, though looping, is of a nice and pleasant street, which is nice and all. Some of the buildings don't look good though, and I saw an error in the background: When it loops, their is a bit of a white line near the top. Also, the biggest disappointment is the Playable character: He doesn't look like his character in the opening cut scene. He's not red, he's buff instead of just straight, and his eye's aren't red.
The way you play this game is like other typical 2-D shooters, ASDW move the character, and the left mouse button shoots the gun you are currently equipped with. This system is hard, and a big turn off to me, which is why I rarely play these types of games to begin with. R is to reload, which is important but I have no complaints about it. Q equips you with a Pistol, with 6-8 Bullets before you have to reload. However, you won't be using that at all, because pressing E gives you a 'Heavy Weapons Guy' Gun which I am going to refer to as "Sasha". Sasha has about 30-ish rapid fire bullets and get's the job done better then the pistol, with it's only problem being it goes up the more you fire it. You will never ever use your pistol because Sasha is so overpowered, and using the pistol would be pointless.
The basic plot is that your suppose to kill 666 dogs in order to unfreeze hell, which is odd because I'd be thinking that you'd have to kill more to burn it up. But a major problem with the game: There are only three types of dogs to kill. The first are regular Joe's who run directly from behind you. They don't attack you: All they do is run to from one end of the screen to the next. The main problem with them is that they die in one bullet, and appear every 4-5 seconds! It's ridiculous that they spawn so fast! I basically had a conga line of them as I was running through the never changing scenery! The second type of dog is the Cop, who will only shoots at you if you stand still. They first spawn in waves of 3, but after 2 waves of them, they spawn in waves of 2, and their spawn rate is about 10 seconds. The problem is that these are the main enemies in the game, and they are too underpowered! And do I find it weird that they walk backwards in order to try and catch up with you? The 3rd enemy is the SWAT dogs, but I have not a lot of info on them, because they are just as easy to kill as the cop dogs, and their are only 9 of them! (in 3 waves of 3) If these guys are suppose to be SWAT dogs they should be the hardest to kill! Instead, they are just as easy to kill as the Cops! And the Swat team never attacked me ever, so I dunno how they attack! They are the most underpowered unit in the game. If anything, they need to be overpowered!
Bottom line: This game is your typical 2-D killing Spree that gives you an over powered weapon (Sasha) against highly underpowered units (Cops and SWAT Dogs). While the game needs major tweaking, it is playable, and the only error in the game is the Underpowered enemies, over powered weapon and a minor error in the background. If your into 2-D Shooter games that are oh so common on Newgrounds, I'd recommend Satan's Retriever's. If your not a fan of 2-D Shooters, or the Show Game Dogs, or just don't care, stay away. Score: 2.5/5
Also, the Badge basically told me I was going to hell for playing the game. That's a bit rude. Also, the badge had nothing to do with Satan's Retriever's either then you get it from playing it. The icon is a Seal looking scared as a fist (I think) flies downward in the background. Again, nothing to do with SR, give me a badge that has something to do with SR!!!!
