That means that, since I can stop gaming without any problem, I can also stop doing coke without problem? Finally, I have no reason not to try any illegal drug I can think of! If I can stop gaming I have supernatural addiction denying powers and can overcome anything!

It's all bad parenting, that's all there is to it.

Of course kids will become violent, if you show no reason for them to stop playing, why would they?

1st measure to be made:
Flamezdudes said:
(snip)...it's the parents fault for allowing young children who aren't mature enough to play games. The parents should at least try to monitor their children's time on games as well.
-I disagreed with your point about the game being innocent- these things are always a dynamic.
2nd measure to be made:
Identify when video games are used as compensation for something: (stereo)typically, a lack of social life outside video games (and the internet). This is when video game "addiction" can become seriously volatile.
3rd measure to be made:
More neurological research should be made into the topic of video game "addiction". What is chemically addicting about it? How much exposure leads to "addiction"? And so on.

Is...is this a late April fool's joke? Seriously...I read this and it sounds like someone is making this shit up. It's like doing Drugs? It's like taking pills that effect their hormones? It's like giving them alcohol?

Seriously, the person who tries to argue this is retarded. First off, kids who play video games do so because their parents let them, and the ones that buy them game after game and let them play rather than do homework are the ones to blame. But seriously, is this a joke?

Gaming used to be a form of entertainment and (at least for me) a place where no matter what I could fit in, since in my grade and in school I felt like an outcast, and in video game world I felt like I was apart of something. Back then we weren't told we're doing the equivalent of snorting drugs. It's just NOW kids are playing games instead of doing homework because parents don't give a shit until the kid's grades ARE shit, and they blame everyone else rather than accept the blame.

Seriously though, is this a joke? PLEASE tell me there isn't a guy who goes around telling people that video games are like snorting coke, or binge drinking whiskey, or adversity effecting a football player's performance if he plays before a game...please tell me this Escapist...please

This is pure and frantic bullshit. Those stats means NOTHING! Maybe they just like gaming and have it as their favorite hobby.
Did it never fucking occur to them that video games does NOT alter/add substances in your body that creates a biological need?!

... My brother was on drugs. This is just fucking insensitive, as he had to get re-schooled for 6 months just to get over it all.
He got shaved, went to meetings... I never heard of him until a good while.

He's fine now though (thank god).

Utter bullshit.

I have known cokeheads, heroin addicts (my ex, sadly, got into it when she was with her next boyfriend and guess who was there to help pick up the pieces,) crack addicts and I've personally had many a point in my life where I've abused weed (yeah, I do think there's such a thing as using it TOO much, and as much as weed isn't anywhere near the hard stuff, having a psychological dependency on it can be crippling.)
I have known hardcore games, have been one myself, and have been prone to 24 hour gaming sessions myself.
Totally different things, totally different situations, totally different effects.

Long gaming sessions are a not only just common, but they are an accepted part of our culture and our hobby.
I'm sure we've all had parties where we've stayed up all night getting drunk and playing guitar hero with some friends until dawn (and those of you that haven't, you're welcome round to mine so you can share the good vibes \o/.) I'm sure most WoW players have pulled many an all nighter for the sake of getting that piece of gear they so desire, and I've taken to staying up all night doing menial jobs for backstabbing, two-faced, time wasting assholes in Red Dead Redemption lately.
Long gaming sessions are THE NORM in this culture, drug habits, psychological and physical dependency are NOT.
Yes, there are people who take it too far, yes there are people who do become addicted to games, but I think the only reason that Doctors believe that because a kid's staying inside choosing to play a video game over going out for a bike ride or something is because there is still a heavy bias against gaming as a culturally accepted medium.

There is STILL a stigma that games are just kid's toys, there is still a stigma that games are a waste of time and that a piece of gear in an RPG is actually worthless (when it infact isn't, because whether real or fictional humanity becomes attached to people, places and objects.) Nobody has a go at the bookworms for buying their faces in Pride and Prejudice for the umpteenth time rather than socialising and nobody complains when movie buffs watch all 3 Lord of the Rings or Godfather movies back to back.
GAMING IS NO DIFFERENT.

Fuck these Doctors, seriously. They get their PhD. and then believe they understand how everybody's head works while forgetting the one most crucial element: CONTEXT.
Not everybody is a social butterfly, nor does anyone want to be. I'm quite the introvert myself but I feel perfectly psychologically healthy. I refuse to be labelled an addict because I prefer to spend my time listening to music, watching movies or playing games.

What a bunch of fucking garbage. I can certify and guarantee that playing video games for a few hours is NOTHING like doing a line of coke. Don't ask me how I know this... (>_>)
