No games in there that can seduce me to buy a Wii U, to be honest. Outdated hardware, a gimmicky controller system and Nintendo recent practice of just releasing the same old NES games over and over again makes it very hard for me to get exited about this console. It's too bad really, Nintendo used to be one of my favourite developers before all this, I hope they still got it in them to amaze me.

Almost all of them since they have identical button layouts.
Thanks for that, I was hoping for it.

I'm going to make sure every thing is clear before I purchase a Wii U, but I'll most likely wait till some more games are released.
Not a problem, Blunty did a rather in depth review of the system as a whole including the launch line up, the controllers, how it all felt to use, etc, that I found rather informative and helpful, here's the first part: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45Ai0P-ui40

Should help to clear things up for you it did for me. The lack of analog triggers is bizarre but hardly a big issue when they're only really helpful for racing sims. I'm sold on it tbh, there's a bunch of games I already want and tonnes on the horizon so I'm up for it.

Oddly a lot of what people seem to dislike about the console seems to be seeping from ignorance about the hardware.
Thanks again. I'll check it out soon. I've already used the controller in store and it's not what I'm looking for. I really dislike having my hands spaced apart so much, and looking down in at the screen is a backwards move when I have a lovely big TV I'd rather look at.

Also, it isn't odd that there are a lot of people who love and hate something before they've even tried it. That's always happened from my experience.
Aye it's worth checking out, honestly I'll use the 80-hour battery life controller Pro for anything that doesn't use the gamepad well or if i'm not playing on just the gamepad.

So say something like Darksiders 2 where alll the menus are on the touch screen and much easier to navigate, I'd use the gamepad, but something like mario bros I'd use the pro controller.

Yeah it's a rampant problem, I can give you first impressions from an hour with a demo, but I can't say a game is utter shit from ten minutes play in a shop.
Thanks for the Youtube link. I've never heard of Blunty before but I like how he explains things.

Just one thing I want to know about the hardware I don't think he brought up. No big deal really, but is it like the Wii that there is only one controller that can be used on the main menu?

Not planning on buying a Wii U for a while, but I went from disinterested to curious after seeing the press conference. Question for those of you who've played Xenoblade, though...

Is there any indication that the Monolith game from the trailer will actually be a Xenoblade sequel? I mean from a story perspective, rather than gameplay.

I ask because the parts of the trailer that interested me were the robots that looked suspiciously like Gears and the red X (which actually got me to cheer.) So to me, it looked like a game set in the Xenogears universe, though maybe with a wink and a nudge b/c of trademark issues. But... is it not? Are there indications in the video it's set in the Xenoblade universe instead? Or... is Xenoblade somehow in the Xenogears universe too?

I never played Xenoblade, so I'm not emotionally invested in a new one... but if the game will be a sequel/prequel/whatever to Xenogears itself, holy shit sign me up. (The X was a big thing for me, since I've never seen it used in reference to any of Monolith's other games.)

I like Blunty, tells things how it is and says what he means, posts funny rants sometimes too.

Umm... No I think you can use the pro controller on the menus too, but I'm not 100% on that. I know that one the Wii you can use a pro controller to navigate the interface, so I would assume you can use the pro controller with the Wii U's interface too.

It isn't Xenoblade 2, it's an unamed project by the same studio. Nothing in there says it's a Xenoblade sequel, more a spiritual successor, since the combat looks quite similar apart from the giant robots.

No problem, never played xenogears myself. Best point of reference for Xenoblade is it's like FF12 without the star wars rip off.

Before I was most interested in Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate and Pikmin 3, but now the new Xenoblade has captured my interest! I can't wait to hear more about it! I'm also really excited about the new Wind Waker HD, I've played the old one but I never owned it, so this is really exciting for me.

They really haven't been, have they? It's kinda depressing really. I come here and I see how negative people are and it's really disappointing.
So how do you like your Wii U?
The negativity of the Escapist seems to seep out the woodwork whenever Nintendo are involved in anything good.

Can't wait for when Nintendo wins E3 this year by having actual games and not just showing off weak PC's with brown/grey shooters!

Ordering mine as soon as my redundancy money clears.

Let me tell you right now that the negativity stems from the Wii and all it's flaws. A lot of people just don't trust them any more, with both hardware and games. The Wii really did that much damage to Nintendo's reputation.

I can honestly tell those people that the Wii U is definitely a big step up from the Wii in terms of hardware and software, and hopefully the library and main titles will improve as well.

I'm gonna wait just a bit longer, and also I need to save money again and some how make more room for my ever growing collection of consoles.

Which I find funny considering the wii didn't actually have a flaw. Just people being graphic whores and not being able to adapt to very precise controls even before wii+.
Now that red ring of death that's a real flaw.

What flaws? They made a relatively weak system that was incredibly easy to develop for. It's not as powerful as it's HD brethern, no, but it has some fascinating games, some of the best of the generation, that people are willfully ignorant of because motion control is a "gimmick", even though most of the motion control is optional in the good games, or extremely well implemented.

Resident Evil 4 is best played on the wii because of the pinpoint accuracy, fantastic control and stellar porting job Capcom did. Games like Xenoblade would have tanked on the HD systems because of overblown budgets required to compete graphically. Sin & Punishment is easily one of the best shooters I've played in years, the Metroid Prime Trilogy is utterly fantastic.

It's hardly the best system ever made, but it has no crippling flaws besides a bunch of shovelware, which is something that's rampant on any system with that kind of install base. The PS2 library is loaded with it, as are the NES and SNES libraries.

From a pure gameplay standpoint the Wii was probably the most fun console of the last generation for me, but then I ignored that the shovelware existed and bought the gems that came out for it. Closest thing I have to shovelware is Mario Power Tennis, and that's a damn fun game.

Yeah I think that's a bit of it, that and "Nintendo is for kids". Really, I found both Mario Galaxy games to be incredibly fun titles and both were pretty damn challenging at times. There's a difference between aiming things at children and having a pure experience that's accessible to anyone.

My only issue with the Wii is that I had to buy batteries for the controllers, but then I'd have to do that with an Xbox anyway. And the non-standard Pro controller made it hard for developers to provide that option, hence games like Goldeneye or Xenoblade shipping with special editions with a pro controller.

Incidentally, I'm no Nintendo fan boy, but I hardly think the Wii deserves to be decried for having a massive install base and attracting the shovelware that has been attracted to every top selling console through the industries history.

Waggle isn't a great complaint either, because in cases like Skyward Sword the control is very precise and if you don't master it, if you just waggle, you won't get past the first dungeon. Any game with shooting done well is a great example of motion done well, Sin & Punishment, Resident Evil 4, Metroid Prime Trilogy.

As for trudging out the same franchises, if you're tired of Nintendo's first party efforts then that's fine, perfectly acceptable. But to call Super Mario Galaxy tired and uncreative is ignorant. There may not be swathes of brand new ideas, but within the given formula Nintendo always takes creative liberties and does interesting and new things with most of their main console titles. The New Super Mario Bros franchise is pretty unoriginal, dipping often into the series enormous bag of tricks, but it's creative and delivers fresh and enjoyable gameplay experiences every time.

[I have far too much time on my hands here]

Alright, chill. I wasn't even expecting to explain any thing.

You have to except that not every one will agree it had the best games and that the Wii mote wasn't any thing more than a gimmick. Some of the main titles did force you to use the Wii mote and it's not a desired choice for all since it's not the type of controller you could just relax with (if you know what I mean).

If you can't do that for me then just forget it. I've had enough yelling wars on this site and I am sick of it.

I was perfectly calm, what in my post told you otherwise?.

I'm aware that not everyone will agree with that, and I can concede that some titles did force you to use a wii remote and nunchuk, but I've never encountered a game that required more than a flick of the wrist. It didn't have all the best games of the generation, it lacked things like Resistance 3 and the Arkham games, for example, but it did have some brilliant software put out in a variety of genres.

My main point was that there were plenty of good games and that the motion control is not necessarily a gimmick at all, it just has to be applied well. If everything is done via motion then you can bet your ass I won't enjoy playing the game, just like I won't enjoy a game of any depth that only uses a touch screen (for example, Phantom Hourglass).

I wasn't trying to say that the Wii was perfect, it did have shovelware in spades but it also had some brilliant games that people all too often ignore and overlook when discussing the console.

In hindsight it definately would have been for the best if the machine had shipped with a classic controller, and more of the great games had allowed for the use of different controllers. Twilight Princess in particularly should have allowed for a gamecube controller or classic controller to be used, it's the epitomy of senseless waggle, as opposed to Skyward Sword, where the motion controls were precise and intelligent.

I think Jim Sterling put it well when he said that alternative control inputs such as motion and touch surfaces are only a better option when they improve something over the traditional button or analog input. I.e. Swiping the screen to melee in Resistance Burning Skies is a pain, because it'd be faster and easier to use a button. Using motion for flying is something I dislike greatly, because I'd rather use a stick for it. Using the wii remote as a pointer in a game like Resident Evil 4 however, was beneficial, it made it easier to control and made your attacks more precise with minimal extra effort. Shaking the wii remote for a melee attack in an fps is a pain, because my hands are on the button, and it's reflexive to push the button for melee.

Red Steel 2 always frustrates me because the sword controls collide with the camera controls and for me they spoiled the experience.

(Playstation Move, now there's a gimmick.)

I'm not trying to have a yelling war with you, just an open discussion, I too despise having yelling wars on this site, it's why I've recently come to ignore any thread with "DMC" or "Devil May Cry" in the title.

I didn't intend to come over fanboyish or shouty, I apologise if I did, I just wanted to make clear that people shouldn't be totally ignorant of the entire system on preconceptions alone, they need to actually use it and seek out quality titles for it before judging it.

I also apologise for the walls of text, I'm quite good at them at the moment...

Edit: Basically, it's fine to have a prefered input, but new methods do take adjustment and people should give them a chance before writing them off entirely. Nintendo made mistakes with the Wii, they're trying not to with the Wii U, particularly in the online connectivity and control aspects.

Don't talk about DMC I'll start ranting
And yeah I haven't seen anything from the peripherals of the kinect or move that would even be considered past a 2.0
aside from a few move compatible games like killzone and that has nothing to do with the controller as so much the game itself. Though to be honest the wii, wii+ and move work pretty well for shooters.

Nope. Not hating on nintendo but I just have not really been taken with their home consoles for a while now. While it all sounds great now its the long terms support that has always been the problem. I'm sure all of those will be solid games but I can't really justify spending the money on such old(big box technology).

I have always enjoyed their portable stuff though so I am content with my 3DS.

I enjoyed the new DMC for what it was, it's easy and all that, but it was fun and it didn't take away the old games from me. That's all I have to say on it.

MOve is good with Resistance & Killzone and such, but it's so poorly implemented in a lot of things and the controls for those games aren't really mapped out well. I also find that the vibration of the move controller is BEASTLY and does affect your playing, within 3 or 4 feet o the TV it's not so hot, where as the Wii motion + is usually fine with it.

Move could have been good if it had been implemented well into more games, it's a lot of fun to play House of the Dead with the Sharpshooter though if nothing else.

FPS games would benefit from motion controls if they had a system like Metroid Prime where you can lock the screen while you aim, or like Resi 4 where the pointer doesn't move the screen and the buttons do, though the latter is more appropriate for slower paced games than anything fast paced or competitive. I found that really helpful in MP3 as it prevented the need for tweaking dead zones for days on end.

Edit: I have no experience with Kinect to be honest so I can't really comment on it, from word of mouth it seems like it has huge potential but it's just not well advanced enough to reach it yet. Issues like input confusion seem to be an issue, much liek those I had with Red Steel 2 confusing my attempt at turning 180 degrees to quickly kill the thing behind me with slashing the air in front of me.

Resident Evil Revelations
Injustice Gods Among Us
Only these two interest me, and unless somethings happened since, these two are also multi platform, so I can get them on the 360. So no, Im not getting a WiiU.

No, even after the announcement I'm not interested in getting the console.

Only two games on that list seemed interesting: Injustice and Bayonetta 2. Problem is a) Injustice is already coming out for other consoles, and b) I'm not getting a console to play just one game on it. Everything else does not catch my attention, and at the current rate I doubt I'll ever get a WiiU. By the time some more interesting games would probably come out for it, the next Sony and Microsoft platforms will already be out, so I'd rather focus on those rather than with this.

I'll just tell ya kinect is pretty much garbage.
Complicated games don't work on it.
Sonic riders is also another bad one. If you thought waggle controls are bad ohohoho you haven't seen anything.

If you aren't into consoles and PC instead that's fine.
I tend to enjoy the portable's more than the consoles myself. They just get something more right more often.
Of coure this is the stuff I am talking about.
