So aion online has been called the "killer of WoW" in for many reasons. I've played both and personally i think Aion could pull it off. I really dont care if Aion is almost a mirror image of WoW, i feel it takes what WoW created and then fixes all its flaws >8] I think its about time somebody stepped up to the plate and told WoW to go **** itself. though i may just be talking through my teeth because i'm a graphics whore (i.e. i likey teh pretty screenies) and Aion is runnin with the help of crytek. So anyone else think Aion Can pull it off?
I personally don't think WoW needs any help killing itself off. Blizzard are doing a good job of kicking the dead horse already. Make way for Diablo III, the next franchise to get milked.

Well I don't know much about MMOs (besides Guildwars) but I believe last time this discussion came up most people said that WoW was far to large for any MMO to topple it at this point.
Didn't they say the same thing about Facebook?

I suppose you raise a good point. Giants, no matter how large, can be knocked down.

But I think it works differently with MMOs, especially when you consider that both of these are pay per month services. People are going to find it hard to abandon all they have done in WoW just to start all over again in a different game.

The only way I see WoW ending is if the game starts to suck, not another game somehow managing to best it.

All I will say is this; when World of warcraft ends, and it will, it will be because something better came along.

I have never heard of Aion online so it obviously can't be even marginally capable of combating WoW.

I agree. Most of the WoW player base aren't made of people who are watching the internet for new games, so chances are most of them don't know about new "better" MMOs.

Unless Blizzard does something really, really stupid (aka, pull a Star Wars Galaxy) it's not going to topple anytime soon.

That being said, has anyone ever taken a look at the WoW forums. I swear almost half of them are threads title "Thats it, I'm leaving" or "Patch 2.4 will kill WoW". People love to complain about it, no matter how much they play.

Why is it that every MMO that surfaces must be called the "WoW Killer"? Is it not enough for people to think that "Hey, maybe it will survive, maybe it'll hit 10% of the WoW subscription numbers, maybe it can be an enjoyable experience for some people."?

Look, I understand WoW is the 800lb gorilla in the room, but come on. Every single new MMO that comes out begins a new thread titled "Is XXXX the WoW Killer?". The answer was 'No' then, it's 'No' now, it will be 'No' to the next 15 threads that start about this same retarded subject. No game will be the "WoW Killer" until Blizzard releases their next MMO project in a few years. It's completely insane to think otherwise.

No, no, no, and no. How about this, instead of saying that every MMO is a "WoW killer" we say whats a good alternative to WoW? Something that is different than WoW. Saying that (Blank MMO) is going to be a WoW killer is like trying to kill God by praying to God to kill himself.

Also: IN SOVIET RUSSIA, WOW KILLS YOU! or is that china?

I bet WoW will live for another few expansions, and then it will start to shrink a little bit as its fans try to find something new. if someone times it right that could very well be the fabled 'WoW killer'.

I saw (but didn't play) Aion at PAX '08. Looked pretty but also looked like every other MMO out there in one way or another. Folks will play it, probably even some WoW folks. But, ultimately, the only real WoW-killer will be WoW itself if/when they ever decide to pull the plug on the servers. Until then, players will keep sending Blizzard money and they'll keep the light on for their WoW players.

I'm more interested to see how long Aion lasts. With only a few exceptions MMOs don't seem to last but a year or so before lack of interest gets them shut down.

As Yahtzee so cleverly put it: "No one can make a dent in WoW's monolithic market share because if I took every oppertunity to acquire World of Warcraft free trial CD's I'd have enough to make an attractive fashionable cape, and perhaps a matching hat."

I think WoW will outlive humanity itself.
Especially that WoW has only about 6 millions of people now, and Aion BEFORE EU/US release has 4 millions.
You know WoW still has over 11 million people right?
Uhm. No. You are the one that doesn't know that WoW China is in Closed Beta because they had to... close down. And 6 millions of people went POOF. There are maybe 60k people in CB right now.

Proves that WoW isn't THAT popular outside of Asia.
Oh reeeeaaaaaally, now? 'Cause, srsly, I googled this. I googled this hard. The best I came up with? Closed Beta is continuing because they switched management from The9, and because they have to adhere to the Chinese Government's standards (zooooombies, om nom nom).

A game having to go into closed beta for the government proves nothing, other than the Chinese government is silly. You're trying a bit too hard to prove a game's superiority. The situation doesn't really apply here.

I've been researching this quite a bit and, by golly, I can't find a single article that says how many users are active in China right now. Perhaps if you had some sources to back up your horrible untruths they wouldn't be horrible untruths anymore. :(

Why do companies try to say that there product is the WOW killer? None of them are able to beat WOW at its own game. It makes more sense to emphaise what makes it different as to attract the many millions of people who don't play mmos, instead of the 11 million WOW players.

Re: WoW and 11 or 12 million subscribers...

In the last two earnings statements of Activision-Blizzard, which spans close to the last two quarters, when WoW came up, there was no mention of the subscriber base. Clearly, these statements were trumpeting the profitability of the company, so if numbers were robust, I'm sure they would have been included. I would say they were conspicuously absent.

Which means to me it is no longer 11 or 12 million subscribers. Even if there were over 10 million subcribers, I'm sure "over 10 million players" would have been mentioned, which makes me very suspicious WoW has fewer than 10 million. With China shutting down WoW that had to cut into the numbers, and while I know a number of people who used to play WoW, those still playing have shrunk to a trickle.

WoW isn't dying. With even 5 million subscribers I'm sure it would still be hugely profitable. Cataclysm has the potential to fix past mistakes with the expansions and tighten up the game even better so things can easily turn around.

Nothing can kill an MMO but the MMO in question....

And yes WoW is a copy, EQ anyone? The only difference is lore and scenery. And dont even bring up PvP in WoW, it is an after thought at best and oh does it blow a nut.
