Okay I really didn't read this thread but I did see this

ok there are 3 main types here, nerd geek and dork

nerd: exceptionally good one one specific skill, and is usually obsessive. does not have social skills

geek: an all around good at complicated things, but not as good as a nerd at their subject. has acceptable social skills, but is a failure with people of the opposite gender outside their race

dork: a nerd without skills. nerds and geeks look down on them
I'm more of a geek, although I am obsessive about anime.

Im called a nerd because i play video-gamesfor fun , wear glasses, and dont "brag" about how drunk i got lass night. Which is a popular trend where i live even though most of it is B.S.

But honestly im outside fishing, quading or hunting most of the time and not sitting in a basement avoiding the sun. Im in good shape but i have a farmers tan not a true tan, i work outside so its a pretty good one. Unfortunatly out here ppl dont bother to change thier minds once they have a opinion on anything. They learned i played video-games so i got a big "NERD" sticker slapped on my forehead even though im not. But oh well, they're all broke cause all they do is drink and i have a good job and a nice truck to boot, but im still the looser, apparently lol

lets see:
I wear glasses and white shirts
I read, write and watch fantasy and sci fi, religiously
I have played video games since I was 6, and still have ready access to many of my old favorite games.
I have an opinion on Kirk Vs Picard, and Kirk wins.
Although Data beats Spock and Bashir beats McCoy.
I swear by the fact that warp speed is faster than hyperspace.
I know who Wil Wheaton, Fulgore, Falcore, Toejam and Earl are.
There are FIVE Indy stories, only the first four are any good.
I know what a Jeffries tube is.

i would say i qualify

I could fall under you definition of stereotypical nerd, although it's not really fair as there are extenuating circumstances.

I'll give you that I wear glasses & am overweight, and at the moment don't go out much or have many friends (where I live), so spend a lot of time at my computer, and I currently live with my Mum.

The reason behind this though is that I moved towns & moved back with my mum, for very un-nerdish reasons, i.e. a lifestyle of hedonism, drugs & escalating violence made me realise I had to make a change in my life for the better or I would end up in a very dark place.

When I was younger I was probably a stereotypical metaller, now I don't like do define myself or others by labels, as things are very rarely as clear cut as that.

I suppose you could call me a born-again nerd, in the same way a biker in prison who finds God is a born again Christian.

As a somewhat slender girl, I think popular culture is convinced nerds like myself do not exist. =P I do have glasses, however, so perhaps I fit the "librarian-looking chick" stereotype?

At any rate, I play D&D fervently (which I've always considered more of a geeky thing, really, being a specialised interest), put a lot of work into my classes and in doing well in Calculus when I was in high school, and actually care what the difference between a "nerd" and a "geek" is. I'm also a hermit-y sort that shuns the outdoors and never went over to a friend's house until high school. PLUS I go to art college and my major is learning to draw comic books. Not even kidding.

I'd say that counts.

I spend time in a dark basement playing D&D on Thursday nights. I'm a music major, which means I rarely see the outside of a practice room. I play Warcraft III, Rock Band, Smash Bros, RPGs, watch videos on Newgrounds and YouTube with the blinds in my room drawn, and sing along with my iPod in public. I stay up all night posting on internet forums. I reread webcomic archives again and again when I get bored. I read fantasy novels and watch old science fiction. But I go out and play Ultimate Frisbee with my friends, I go to metal concerts, work out at a gym bi-weekly, and I get into swordfights with total strangers. I talk to girls comfortably and am happy in my two-year relationship.

Nerd, yes; stereotypical, no.

I've actively played GURPS campaigns (finally HSIA, another GURPS player!), do well in school, don't go out much, have way too much time on the computer and console.

That said, I also do have real life friends, and am some what fit, though skinny.

In my opinion, no one really fits into a label, and anyone who tries to fit people into labels ends up seeing the world in black and white, which is not so great.

I'm a nerd, have glasses, and cannot hang onto a girlfriend. Other than that, the stereotypes end. Now let me go get my Funions and Mountain Dew.

Labels are lazy. You won't learn anything about people by thinking about/trying to fit labels.

Wear glasses, got good grades in school, and got kicked out of a bar for hacking their computer. Only I was actually installing Windows Updates. They had a blank administrator password - what was I supposed to do?!?!?

Oh, also had to interrupt a game of Magic to do some kernel debugging. Also, spent years arguing about Star Trek vs. Star Wars (Trek forever!) on the newsgroups. Used a graphing calculator religiously for that - also wrote some monte-carlo simulations that pitted E-D against a star destroyer.

I didn't really vote yet. firstly because I must find out what you define stereotypical.

Honestly the first thing that comes to my mind as a stereotypical nerd is a acne ridden, thick glasses, either a weak build, or weighs excessively. and of course are 'Socially Retarded' (Sorry, I couldn't resist)

Of course these are only the super stereotypical ones which you see on channels like Disney.(which is supposed to be a channel against suicide even though I'm sure you can agree this might be causing some)

(Now to actually submit something to this thread)

Well. I'm honestly not sure where I fit in. I worry about my looks a lot, and I pretty much have a 'Pretty Boy'' Face. Aside from that I also find I have nice hair and I'm skinny (Almost no muscle though. All right, All right! I admit it, I'm femme!) I don't have any glasses, almost no acne, and I don't like very very short hair or buzz cuts too much.

BUT. Aside from that I live an entire double life!!!

While I'm at home I usually spend the nights inside. Either on my computer writing, ranting, reviewing. Or perhaps on my Play Station 3. Other then that I usually take two baths/showers (I'm not too picky, as long as it gets me clean.) each day, consume very little, and work out a bit. (Aside from all that I'm entirely lazy)

Excessive information: I have hair that goes down to my neck in the back, and is trimmed in front. and I usually straighten it. and I never really cared for DnD too much.

What's your verdict on what I am?

There's too many flavours of nerd (or 'nerd tribes' if you will) to say which one is the most stereotypical. The 'stereotype' is more of a mish-mash of different nerd-flavours squashed together by normal people to create something to look down on.

I mean, you've got your Tabletop gaming nerd, your computer games nerd, your otaku nerd, CCG nerd, TV show fanboy nerd, MMORGP nerd, etc. Given that anybody can fall into two or more flavours at any given time, you end up with a mess that's impossible to label and categorize effectively.

I don't get out much, though this could be related to how poor I am, although I DO get out occasionally. I've always hated stereotypes because they're so... irrelevant. They seem to undermine themselves such that using them as a means of distinction is quite subversive. Take this thread for example; the idea that a nerd is anyone passionate about something is fairly accurate. My mother for example, is a horse nerd. In the broader context you could say it was anyone with a hobby, or who follows something closely and makes this part of their social diet, is also a nerd.
The term nerd is probably going to be disappear gradually, over time. Actually this indistinction is probably why 'nerds' get ragged on so much, so that those a little insecure with a "we're not so different" attitude can feel superior to someone. Although such people are probably sociopaths, and should be sterilized.

Everyone gets ragged on. It's usually those rich, charismatic and full-of-them-self-head-in-the-ass type people which are to blame for stereotypes though.
