What is immersion therapy? Worry not, for I shall wikipedia it!
Yeah but virtually everybody can speak standard German...right? I thought it was rude to speak different dialects to each other.
Actually, millions of people across Germany are difficult to understand (and, indeed, have problems understanding each other), because even if they don't happen to speak in a particular dialect (something that's very hard to switch off because you likely grew up with it), they still usually have some kind of accent. Bavarian or Hessian, for example, are dialects with a partially unique vocabulary, but then there are those lovely folks from Saxony, who do speak German, but everyone has a hard time understanding them nonetheless because of their heavy accent.
Bottom line, while just about everyone is proficient in writing regular German (Hochdeutsch, as it is called), speaking it is a whole other issue; most folks don't see someone speaking in dialect as rude because some people really can't help it. I, for one, was lucky enough to have been raised by parents who put great value on Hochdeutsch despite our dialect-heavy location. ^^

-EDIT-
Oh yes, immersion therapy. It basically means that instead of learning a language as you would in a school setting, you gradually acquire it by surrounding yourself with people who speak it, texts in that particular language, movies, TV etc. It's a variation of the process exhibited by infants when they first start uttering words and sentences.

we have great beer, and audi, and, as many democracies, the people don't get to say shit about anything, so hell yeah! ^^
but as it has been stated before, WW2 at school, again and again and again and again and... you get the picture... at some point it just gets boring. or a nuisance. or both.

our ancestors were dickheads, and because of that we cannot say anything against anyone, because that instantly makes us nazis, ok, we got it the first time! geez...

i guess it ain't too bad, all in all. yet xD
shit is about to get real!

Well yeah of course wien ist im österreich i always sorta include austria as germany since its the same people ethnically. the major difference, historically, is austria remaining catholic while germany went protestant.
Yeah, I always mix up USA and Canda. They are both in North America and they both speak English. Canadians sometimes even speak Frensh but well...
;)

I don't think people from Austria would like to be considered as Germans. To some extent there seems to be a little rivalry. And because of their accent Austrians speak a bit different than Germans. They even have their own words for some things that are unknown in Germany.

I once knew a German, he was kinda cool. Also, their economy is pretty much keeping Europe afloat so I feel I can't dis them too much.

I work with a bunch, and they seem largely unamused by the various jokes I tell. However, Rammstein makes up for that.

A German fellow walks into the library, and in a somehow rough english accent asks for some books on war. The librarian look over her glasses and sniffs "Fuck off, mate; you lost the first two."

You mean Germany? The country with zero-tolerance for drunk drivers, the country that teaches the hell out of the war that made them infamous instead of denying it ever occurred?

Love them Krauts.
What would you have them do sir? Deny the war ever happened? Why? It did happen. Just because they teach it doesn't mean they are proud of it. It's a huge part of recent history and there are many lessons to be learned, such as:"not putting a genocidal Austrian in charge of your country."

Also drink driving can and has killed several people(and I don't mean the drunk driver themselves because frankly, fuck their dumb asses for attempting it. I'm talking about the cars they collide with killing innocent people, so frankly I don't see how being strict on drink driving is a bad thing.)

OT: I've been to Germany once and the people seemed friendly enough. Not that I can speak any german. Also Germany is the European capital of meat and beer. What's not to like?

What are you thinking about germans?
Love em! ^^

They invented pretzels. And Pepperoni Pizza.
(and before you say anything about the Italians, yes, they invented a product called pizza, but it was the Germans who created thin crust and thought it would be an awesome idea to put pepperoni on their pizza (they also used salami) - thus Germans invented modern thin-crust pepperoni pizza).

I stayed in Germany for three weeks, and while it was awesome and fun, I would never want to live there. America is the place to be (for me at least) :D

Lord Thread,
riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiise.

But enough of that.
Yeah, I really like it (having by now spend the majority of my life there).
I´m not overly fond of the large cities though, most of them are a bit of a dump (except Koeln I guess, which is the good kind of dump).
On the other hand, living in a small-ish Universitaetsstadt (Marburg, Muenster, Heidelberg etc.) in Germany is, imho, amongst the most fun and relaxed things you can do with your life.
Also, I can see a castle from my lab.
How awesome is that ?

During my time in the army I got based in Paderborn in Germany.

I went to a club there called Black and Whites and met a barmaid called Jessica. I'll tell you something, that was the best 6 months i've spent on a posting.

The food in some of the places we ate was fantastic, the beer was cheep, another barmaid taught me to swear in German on my second day there.

I can quite honestly say I really did enjoy Germany.

Germans make some damn good stuff, they seem to be a bit more like the people I'd like than my american brethren.
They do all the boring things really well, it looks like, and that's where it ends up mattering.

I love Germany. Amazing culture, great history. Plus, being of German (99% sure on this) decent doesn't hurt either. ;)

Well seeing how I didn't serve in WW2, and I live in America--almost the opposite side of the world from any accurate representative of the German population-- I don't care.
I don't know if there's some kind of European tongue-and-cheek rivalry. But I have no reason not to like them.

I'm German, so there is a lot I see different from people who have only visited here, but I do like the location, landscapes and cultural heritage. (We do have some kick-ass castles standing around.) So I would totally enjoy playing the guide for Americans to see them marvel at the strange ways of us Europeans. XD

Oh, and forget about beer, our real obsession is bread!
But the world's longest bar is in Dusseldorf..! D:

Haha, my old german teacher had us each do a project focusing on a different Germanic city and its cultural significance (I got Bern. FUCKIN BEAR PITS! D:< ). The kid who got Dusseldorf kept going back to the bar, and eventually the teacher stopped the class and explained to us that, even though Germany has a beautiful landscape and an incredibly deep cultural past, Dusseldorf is shit and has nothing to offer. xD Still makes me giggle :)
The part about the largest bar is not true actually ;P It's called "Längste Theke" (longest bar...bar as in counter not as in the whole place) but it refers to the (tiny...half a square kilometer) "old town" district which has about 300 bars/clubs so there isn't much room for anything else...thus longest bar. As for your teacher...is he by any chance from cologne? ;p There is an old rivalry/hatred between the citys but they are both alright i grew up in cologne and moved to D Dorf in february ;P

I think I would love Germany. I am mostly German myself, I like German people and I love the food.

Whenever I see German people they are smiley, happy, huggy types... or are they just drunk?

I mean if I love deep lager beers and can eat blood sausage with a smile on my face that means I would like Germany right?

I really do think I would love the country... at the very least a highway with no speed limit definitely screams me, but considering I am quite blinded by what really goes on over there I can not speak with absolute certainty.
