Fallout 3, Oblivion and Mass Effect, three of my favorite games of all time.

WoW is an MMORPG
Fable is an Action RPG
Dungeon Siege is a Hack and Slash RPG

You can split hairs all you want, but don't expect everyone else to.
None of those games involve any actual roleplaying.
Roleplaying is up to you, they do all involve character development.
Wait, so Crysis has weapon modifications. Does this mean it's an RPG?

In GTA: San Andreas, you can train your character. Does this make it an RPG?

In a driving game, you can upgrade your cars. Does this mean every driving game is an RPG?

NO!

They all involve leveling up but making your dude stronger does not constitute character development. Otherwise you could argue that everything from Devil May Cry to Team Fortress 2 is an RPG because of the new weapons and abilities that you unlock.
Exactly. Any game where a character gets stronger as you play could be treated as an RPG. Doesn't make it so.

Putting a collar on your neck doesn't make you a priest, wearing a dress doesn't turn you into a girl.
Calling WoW, Fable and Dungeon Siege isn't splitting hairs over what is an isn't an RPG.
All of these games were created with Roleplaying as an intended part of the game, to some extent or another.

You are being pedantic, and a very poor critic.

Some of the Western RPGs you listed are not even RPGs. Namely Dungeon Seige, Ultima and World of Warcraft.

The first is a hack n' slash with rpg elements (mostly hack n' slash) and the latter two are MMOs.

Back on the subject though, it's a hard call between western and eastern RPGs. I would honestly say its hit or miss for both sides, both have had some amazing games and some amazing flops.

I thought the intended part of WoW was grinding and collecting loot, Dungeon Siege the same + more monsters, and Fable... well, it was supposed to be a Godsent game where everyone can do everything.

I like them both. Each has appeals, each has negatives. Why limit yourself? A good game is a good game.

If I had to pick, I tend to go JRPG more, but I'll pursue a Western RPG if I hear good things(Vampire, Witcher).

JRPGs have gone downhill as of late outside of the Shin Megami Tensei banner, sadly. But at least SMT is still good.

Jade Empire...

Can't decide.
I can't decide if I should slap you or feed you with a raw fish head.
Sheesh, that was unnecessary. Wishing me my death or being hit. Since when Gonzos gave death threats...
I said "slap you". And a raw fish head would at best make you sick. Not gravely, but enough to understand that reading the thread (or at least the very page one posted on) is important.
Ok, wishing me pain because of my choices... I still don't get it...
Oh, no no. I love Jade Empire.

It's just not an RPG. It's an action game with elements of RPG. Sure, it has a lot of them, but you have a combo system (and such thing usually excludes it from being compared to, lets say, KotOR). It has more action than RPG.
Bah except for the combat, it's a solid RPG. I wonder does a RPG needs to be turned-based to be a RPG?

Baldur's Gate has easily eaten up hundreds, maybe thousands of hours of my time.

Where's the option for both? Because I have no clear preference. I prefer JRPGs for the over-the-top story, and WRPG for accessibility: The objectives are always clear, and there is no search every damn house until you find a clue, type of quest.

I can't really vote on this because of the wide spectrum of JRPG's out there and the rather slim picking of the Western RPG's

Western RPG's fall pretty much into the D&D based gameplay, in fact some of the most respected are straight from the world of D&D/Forgotten Realms, BG series, Icewind Dale series, Planescape:Torment NWN and NWN2.

The serious downside to Western RPG is that if you can't get into D&D then most of those quality titles are lost which means you're limited to games like the Elder Scrolls series, Fallout series and so on...also most of these older titles are getting long in the tooth and eventually will require an older laptop or rig to be able to run them.

The Elder Scrolls has always been known for it's graphics and massive area (See: Arena) but except for Battlespire, Redguard and Morrowind the story is very flat and rather forgettable as are the characters...very little stands out, unlike games like Planescape in which Morte is forever etched in our minds.

In closing, i think western RPG's are slowly falling into the murky depths of action/adventure with little story or character development

Immersion and general quality-wise: Western RPGs.
Also because JRPGs scare me and generally fail... like Final Fantasy.

Sorry for the quote, but your post made me think. What were the last 3 Western RPG games i was playing, which were 100% RPG and not some crossover game. I got really disappointed, because it was Drakensang (some german game, i'm not even sure if there is an english version), Neverwinter Nights 2 and before that Fallout 2, which was released september 1998. Fallout 3, Mass Effect, Dungeon Siege 1+2, the Diablo Series, Witcher, etc. all were games, which I wouldn't call RPG. It may be a personal thing, but I came to the conclusion that the western RPG lacks in number of titles.

No, stop being silly.
Exactly my point. I wasn't being silly.
I'm getting confused. What does take to make a game being a RPG?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Role-playing_video_game

Any other Problems?
I liked that line most:
"RPGs rarely challenge a player's physical coordination, with the exception of action role-playing games."

It seems like the Japanese stopped making good RPG's a decade ago, while western RPG's still go strong. Voting Western.

You're forgetting the letters after MMO. You know, the whole RPG part? MMOs are basically all RPGs, since they follow the format created by D&D and tabletop games of that ilk. Saying they're not RPGs is just burying your head in the sand. As is calling it "hack 'n slash with elements of RPG". D&D was originally all about exploring dungeons, killing monsters and taking their stuff.

As a D&D player myself, I think I would have to say I'm more of a fan of Western RPGs, though I've found a few gems in the JRPG bin.

Western RPG's, mostly because JRPG's are usually turn-based and seem to often have some element of "THIS IS ABSOLUTELY RETARDEDLY HUGE", like someone's sword or hair. And most of them seem to involve young people/kids running around doing all sorts of stuff no grown man (much less child) has business doing. Mostly, though, it's the turn-based bit. JRPG's, for the most part, can be pretty good but aren't always.

Oh and Elder Scrolls is a Western RPG.

Looking at all the pointless, biased bullshit that's being dumped into this topic, I come to the following conclusion: people need to learn from you.
