MANLY MEN!

OT: Unarmed. Just seems manly. Runner up is the Rapier because I take fencing. Now that I think about it, it'd be easy to do the ATATA-*cough* with a rapier as well.

This poll is flawed. The best melee weapon is not an option. This is the best melee weapon:

Chainsword. Couple that with a Bolt Pistol and I'm set.
No, just no. They are completely impractical weapons, and as such they do not and never will exist. If you were to strike a target with such a weapon it would fly right out of their hands. Modern chainsaws are designed to prevent this, as they have a grip on the back to counteract the forward thrust. Also, Warhammer sucks.

In terms of being awesome, probably a sword or an axe. in terms of what i'd actually carry with me, either a machete or a decent-sized claw hammer--good bludgeon, can pierce through stuff, relatively light and small for the amount of damage it can do, and can even be thrown to some level of effectiveness as a last resort.

Swords, because I am boring and uncreative. Also because they are just awesome. :D

Naginata is interesting to me. I enjoy the combination of staff and blade and think it works well as both a defensive and offensive weapon.

Axes, mainly hatchets, I practise escrima, they work REAL good for it, also you can cut wood with a hatchet, good as a survival tool and a weapon.
I would have 2 of them...

Gotta go with the axe, gravity does the work for you, it smashes armor, it tears through flesh and bone alike, and you can throw them pretty damn well. Plus I want to make my Viking ancestors proud.

The spear is an art..

Behind shields, they are invincible
Thrown, they are magnificent
Jammed through an enemy's chest?
Priceless.

The sword. Its the only weapon on that list that doesnt have some kind of natural drawback. Plus theres a bunch of different types and syles to choose from.
swords have very big drawbacks(its why they were some of the least used on the battlefield in reality)
Range was king in fights(pikes, spears,& pollaxes)

I agree with you that swords have their drawbacks (personally I'm more of an axe type), but you must remember that there were actually types of swords designed specifically do overcome long weapons, for example, the Zweihänder, a MASSIVE German sword capable of doing two things most swords couldn't, it was long enough to use as a spear substitute during an enemy cavalry charge, and - more importantly for us - lop the tips off of spears/pikes/halberds before closing on enemy infantry.

The bar mace. When you absolutely have to crush every bone in your opponent's body... accept no substitutes.

Any sword that last only 50 years in the Renaissance was not practical on the battlefield. Fifty years is incredibly short for a weapons practical life in those days(Long sword had a 350year run and pikes had about a 2000 year run comparably). So I stand by what I said.

The zweihander came in too late. I don't think many weapons remained effective for long if firearms come into existance. If it existed earlier, it might have lasted as long as a hand and a half, though not as popular. Never liked the idea of pike and shot formations, thus I like sword and bucklers, along with zweihander.

That said, zweihanders are my favourite melee weapons, trailed by an assortment of polearms.

Katanas are overrated to me, I immensely prefer this beauty. If you call this heavy, cumbersome and unwieldy, you have to realise that mostly huge elite fighting men used this blade.

But I don't own weapons, so I settle with my karate.

I mostly like short daggers or swords, but recently i have found an appreciation for the mace

This is a nice dagger from scorpion knives in sheffield, pity that that i had to round the handle myself
