I hear a lot of talk about chavs on the escapist, are you one them?

Oh yeh, the amount of times I walk past a group of chavs, and one of them says "Oh yes, I was browsing escapistmagazine.com yesterday - that MovieBob fellow is awfully funny on his 'The big picture', when I came across a very interesting forum article!"

No mate. I don't think there are many chavs on the Escapist. Not Manchester chavs anyway.

It seems like you have had a pretty unlucky experience, unless you came here already wanting to dislike the place. though it seems that people up and down the country have just seen that your native American heretige as a button to puch and wind you upand to get a rise out of you, if you were short they would have got to you about that. and i dont honestly belive that most people you met were doing it maliciusly.

also not visiting the north was a mistake we are a much friendlier bunch up here

People say they saved you from sin? Eurgh well i cant talk for religious fanatics but im sure they ruin everyone's experience. Sounds to me like youv gotten a very bad taste of Britain. Try Northern Ireland. Iv never been anywhere more friendly than the Irish!

p.s if it can be cooked in a takeaway it is not the sort of "traditional" food you should be trying

I small percentage. and not really, i wasnt born there. I run on the american basis of provable 2%-ism (mainly its you have ot be 2% to be considered seriously of that race/ethnicity.

I'm (rounded numbers):
6% Native American.
24% Italian
15% German
36% Polish/Pollack (i'm told there's a difference, but i dont see it)
14% Irish
4% mixed (pick a country in europe, chances are I'm part of it geneologically)
and
1% British

So.. You're polish? Not a native? Nothing wrong with being polish.

Okay, haven't really read the thread but thought I'd chime in, I'm 25 [whatever relevance that has], I'm English but but I've got blood from all over the place, point is I don't see any reason for people to be proud of what is essentially hereditary geography.

Only Brit by paper, and living here for a while... PS: there's no option for Not brit and over 25 years of age.. and below 25 years is repeated.

However, I don't see the point in being proud for the endeavors of the ancestors of your nation. Every generation is a new country. If you want to be proud of your country, then do something that people can be proud of.

Personally, I just see national pride as a way of controlling the masses.

You was not treated like scum. What i have gathered from your earlier post was that you went around UK telling everyone you meet you were a native american. You did not get the reaction you wanted to like, i.e WOW you are so cool. But instead no one cared. So you decided instead to class us as arrogant.

90-94% European (Depending on what 'mixed' means (mixed sweets maybe?))

And that makes you a Native American. Wow.

It makes me Native American cause i was BORN IN AMERICA. I'm Cherokee before anyhting else, American second, then American-Italian decent and then i go down the list by largest number of percentage in my blood. Besides, the Cherokee has had more influence on my life then aynthing else.

thats pretty much it in a nutshell. And it was out of a takeway, but I had to do research where i was going and i saw that a large part of British diet was fish and bread (especially during the time of my study whihc was colonial up to 1877) so thats what a larger portion of my meals had ot be.

We do alot of sarcy jabs to people, no matter where they're from, to wind them up. It's how we talk.
If you were american we'll go on about republicans, the deep south and guns. If you were german we'll bring up the war. If you're french, you should just get out and surrender. If you're scouse then your team is now nothing more than a mid table team with a very average team, and 2005 was a fluke.
Making fun of each other and ourselves is just how we roll. Me and my mates throw racial slurs and racist comments at each other casually because it's fun to wind up your mates or try.

I'm not proud of being British but that's because the concept just doesn't gel with me. It just seems like arrogance as it's essentially the worst form of patriotism: "My country is better than yours".

Am I glad I was born in this country rather than certain others? Yes, certainly.

The difference is that rather than lauding the "greatness" of Britain, I instead feel ashamed that other people in the world have to live in countries that aren't as safe, free and well-fed as mine.

I got asked what i was because I had a slightly darker shade so i didnt look native british. after I told people what I was, i got those reactions. Of the few people that i met who werent british decent (i.e. oriental mostly, but that might have just been the places i visited), I told them after they told me what they were and tehy didnt react with the same hostilities. I dont think I'm cool for being Native American. I just htink I'm me and that that part of my ancestry make me a little more different but not higher above anyone. The people i made friends with didnt care i was Cherokee, and i was glad tehy didnt. I get enough of it in America when my neighbors ask me to do a rain dance when we have a drought.

Nationalism makes my skin crawl, so I'm not proud to be British. Until recently I found the country an adequate place to live but the most recent government is seeking to undo that as quickly as it's possible, turning this place into a hellhole for people like me who dare to be poor.

Whats not to be prowd about?

We've got the highest teen pregnancy rate in Europe, One of the highest drink rates, one of the fattest, we have the least living space and we're least popular! I for one am prowd of coming first in so many lists.

Also, We're the only nation I can think of who can hold a fair election and still end up with a government no-one supports.

In fact, I think we're the only country to hate itself so much. We're actualy four country's, all of whome hate the English... Including the English.
