Given the fact that I actually finished Oblivion in 3rd person AND that I hate 1st person in RPGs, obviously I went for 3rd person view in Skyrim.

Wow, I am loving 3rd; was a bit surprised about the poll results. I switch into first person sometimes - mostly when trying to loot something that is difficult to get the 3rd person camera focused on.

Third-person when exploring and fighting critters or common bandits, First person when looting, studying walls or fighting dangerous beasts.

First. I can't play third person when they feel like they've been made for first and play really badly.

First person mostly. I go into third person sometimes when I want to see how my character looks, or when I'm doing stealth missions.

When I tried the demo I played in 3rd person, and it was fine. Now that I am giving Oblivion a second chance, first person feels more natural, and not at all how I dreaded it would be.

I'll definitely try out both, but it looks like I'll be playing it more in first person, like you're "supposed" to do.

First for most of the time (battles always in 1st), however switch to 3rd when travelling in forest, mountains etc, you can see more around so things can't sneak up on you as easily.

Mainly first. I occasionally go into third when on long journeys or when I'm in a cave of 1-hit kill bandit enemies just for fun.

First person for the most part, but I'll use third person. Its still not perfect, but its finally playable.

Same with Fallout - first person for combat but third for exploring. Although if I am running from an enemy then I go third person, so that I can see my surroundings easier.

3rd person all the time. The camera's just so well done this time around, compared to previous games!

I've tried the camera, and I like that you can adjust it to whatever distance you want, but it still feels awkward to fight or interact with objects. I do use it occasionally when I'm roaming the countryside though, but it just doesn't feel right to me. I was honestly hoping for a more natural, over-the-shoulder feel as an option, kind of like RE4.
I prefer third-person but a lot of the interactable stuff in the game is so small and may be located in dimly lit corners that I usually have to use 1st person when I'm gettin mah lootz. Dodging properly in combat is almost impossible in 1st person (for me, anyway). I also use 1st person when I'm trying to snipe--i.e. shoot through some narrow opening or awkward angle. If I try this in 3rd person, about 85% of the time the arrow or spell will bounce right off something because I can't tell if there's a solid object between the arrow-launching point and the targeting reticule.

I kind of like the ability to switch modes, and it's what allows the game to have so much proximity-sensitive stuff rather than having some kind of auto-targeting system.

Oh, and if you think the third person in Skyrim is awkward, try playing Gothic sometime. That's a hardcore interface right there--if you're not screaming and tearing your hair out by the time the tutorial is over, you are officially a Gaming Badass, Master of Holding Down Keys While Pressing Other Keys That Should, By Rights, Use The Same Finger.

I like to wander around in the open in 3rd a lot, but I mainly use 1st for "immersion" sake.

When I'm in combat mode or trekking along, I'm in FPS.

When I'm a town and/or talking to people, I'm in TPS.

As my first character is a heavy-armor wearing, battleaxe wielding Orc, I play most of the game in first person view. Had I rolled a mage- or thief-type, then I would play in third to see the character. However I do roll into third for the screenshots once I finish crafting a new full set of armor (Dwarven armor on an orc looks a bit...weird).

I roam the country side in third person, and fight & explore dungeons in first person. The reason being is to keep things from sneaking up on me outside, and to make fighting easier.

First person. I can't do third, precision is my element, not going to cock that up with third person.
