I think it entirely depends on the situation. However, I also believe that there are multiple ways to solve a problem not all of which are violent and are preferable. I respect diplomacy a lot.

Any time people say it's not the answer, I get a little mad. I've tried reasoning with bullies when I was younger, but sometimes the only thing that made them leave me the hell alone was banging their face into a metal tether-ball pole until they were bleeding...and crying.

It's amazing what you can accomplish with a little violence.

Ok, so maybe I sometimes overdo it, but over the years, I've learned the limits.

Violence is never the answer? No.
Violence is never the best response? Yes.
I hate gray morality, but there you go.

I think violence is not necesarily an answer, but it always makes people calm down and talk. After awhile of violence even the most beligerent people cave in and become diplomatic.

violence should not be the first response to most situations BUT it is USEFULL AS HELL, a surefire way of winning a dispute, and well... easy... most disputes should be solved with words but often times its used when totally unessesary(probably butchered that word).

Some people are too stupid to understand rational arguments. In times like that, yeah, sometimes a smack can get the message across.

I agree here. I mean, your waiter yells at you for not tipping correctly, you can punch him in the face. You'll end up on aggravated assult charges, or something like that. Tax collector comes around, and you can shoot him. You'll probably spend life in jail, but its an answer. Someone tries to stab you, shooting them is an answer, but you'd better have a permit to carry. And uhhhhh, non-violence can be more deadly than turning the other cheek. I mean, look at the Holocaust (Just saw a play in school on it, so its formost in my mind)

I choose a life of non-violence because I believe this is an essential paradigm for an evolving society. (Lead by example, model the behavior...whatever)

I do not, however, forego my inherant right of self-defence in the face of someone else's violence (see: context). Responding to an immediate threat is an appropriate time for violence. If I choose to respond to viloence in kind then I also choose to accept the consequences and if I choose to submit to it: likewise.

When no immediate threat is present we have more time to consider the subtle forms violence takes, and address ourselves to it's root causes. (Greed, poverty ignorance, extremism, fear, politics) We should try to understand what elements of our society thrive on perpetuating it and learn to imagine a world where we have developed beyond it's percieved inevitablity.

Violence may be a part of the human condition but it is not the only part and does not have to be the defining part. We are still defining ourselves and the work is progressing where ever we decide to take it

To say that violence is never the answer is gross idealism bordering on stupidity.
Like if a rabid dog is attacking you.
Diplomacy won't do shit and you can't run away since the dog runs faster.
You've got to defend yourself with something far more concrete than smiles and good intentions.

Quote for truth, man/woman/other, but I will submit to you one contradiction. Violence is the answer when you've tried everything else.

You can never try every single possible option as there are an unlimited number of options for every problem. Even maths.

I think you're not doing this right. You should first take something very dear to the one you're asking, and carefully destroy it while he/she is forced to watch.

Then ask again, and see what answers you get.
