British SBS, they have SAS training and then go even further. So basically they're SAS combines with SEALS with a badass seal of approval.
Oh, man. These guys. They pull off some insane stunts too. I seem to remember watching a TV program about guys who won the VC, and one of them showed a SBS guy who basically walked through enemy fire and just threw grenades. When the dude finally got hit, his unit tried to get him out for medical attenion but the guy made them keep him behind just in case anyone got injured trying to save him.

I'm Canadian, so I'm gonna say Canada's elite military unit is the greatest in the world...

...ermm... well, I would if we actually fucking HAD ONE!!!! [sub][sub]that I knew of...[/sub][/sub]

So, I'm gonna say the Russians... I mean, they're Russian! Russians don't survive their first week after birth unless they can kill a man with your bare hands and turn his sweet jugular-juices into alcohol!!!

So, Spetz FTW...

I didn't know the British Royal Marines was a special force, but anyways...
I'll have to go with Israeli, and Spetsnaz. The Spetsnaz because of their training, and the fact that they are pretty much the most inherently insane when it comes to battle, for the reason that they fear nothing. Americans are fearless from battle because of the whole "leave no man behind" thing. Israeli, although their training and skill may/may not be as high as SEALs and SAS, but they know what it is like to "defend" their country, American special forces rarely have to defend their own soil. Or ever, unless it's a counter-terrorism unit. Israelis live and breathe conflict.

I'm going to go with the Ghurkas.
A ghurka on a train in India, a retired one, mind you, killed 3 armed men, wounded 8, and convinced the other 29 that fucking with him was a bad idea, so they left. With a knife. I mean, that's pretty boss.

With the vast array of training they've received, combined with battle experience, I'm gonna have to go with America's usual first strike military option. "Rangers Lead the Way!"

Google JTF2

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joint_Task_Force_2

The reason why there's not a lot of info out there about them is because we like to keep our special forces secret.

Hands down JTF2. Never heard of them? Exactly. Don't know what they do? Neither does anyone else.

Aaaaand to put a little weight behind my choice, I give you this:

"While serving with Task Force K-Bar, commander Rear Admiral Robert Harward stated that his JTF2 team was his first choice for any direct action missions, yet Harward had eight other countries' special forces units to choose from, even his own SEALs."

The clear choice here is Delta Force. Their pulled from all branches, have the best training, weapons, and technology money can buy. Also i've read alot about special forces and they came across as the best. They have to run a forty miler for godssake.

I'll say Spetsnaz and here's why:

No, not the fact that you risk dying during training. During the Beslan school hostage crisis, a Spetsnaz sniper was covering a wall of the school, when he saw that a naked little girl just outside the wall, which he had though dead, suddenly stood up and began to aimlessly walk in the midst of bullet fire from both sides. The sniper immediately requested to be allowed to shoot the girl's foot (and anyone can imagine that a sniper bullet can rip of a child's leg) so that she'd stay down and not get killed. He was refused and he watched in horror as the confused child reentered the school just as the bombs were going off and the roof fell on top of her. Now THAT's Spetsnaz! Ice cold...

I am obviously partial to my own group: 1st Scout Rangers. Problem is, we don't get out of our own country much. For domestic ops, I would say we are among the top operators. For international though, British SAS.

Seriously, outside of the British, who has taken over the country once in its history? Even the Australians are kept at bay, and they're pretty badass themselves!
Don't kid yourself that NZ could repel any determined invasion force. Even including reserves and those currently deployed, the total number of men in the combined NZ militaries is <12k.

For instance, once the 12 ships comprising your navy have been sunk, the attacking force could sit offshore and destory the place with cannon fire and arial bombing.

On topic, I'm going to have to go with other.

From the units of which I am aware, I'll say the SASR (Aussie SAS) - widely regarded as ultra proffesional soldiors; extensive, brutal training and a 'no one left behind' attitude.

However, I've got to agree with previous posters in that the 'best' SF units is one that you won't know exists unless you're a member of it or are commanding it.

The Australian SAS. We're the best. Closely followed by the British. (Very closely at that.) And the NZ SAS is pretty damn good too, though probably not quite in this league due to funding.

...Gurkhas aren't even Special Forces, although I imagine that knife would have been a kukri. Those things can, in the hands of the right person, decapitate someone. The right person being that unassuming 5'4" Nepalese guy who is smiling cheerfully and who wouldn't seem likely to hurt a fly.

EDIT: Well maybe 5'7" because that is how tall Dip Prasad Pun is.

The SAS are utterly brutal and known to have deaths in training due to their insistence that everything be live fire.

Spetsnaz is the same way plus they're Russian, meaning they really don't give a fuck if you live or die at any point.

The thing is, I've seen an example of most any of these people on TV at one point or another and the Spetsnaz guys scared me the most. The Seals are kinda arrogant sounding. The SAS are dead serious but the British accents really lessen the impact, from posh to cockney, they just don't sound that intimidating. The Spetsnaz are cold as ice, focused, and supremely confident without sounding arrogant and that's why I give them my vote.
I've met some SASR guys (I didn't know it at the time, I just thought they were regular Army) they were a little reserved but not scary at all, just like regular blokes talking shit and making jokes.

I don't think anyone has the best unit. No matter how legendary a unit might be, there's nothing preventing an opposing force from defeating them through sheer will. Soldiers are soldiers, and no matter what side they're on, they deserve the utmost respect in that regard.

But I am Canadian, so I stand fully behind our military. If I had to pin down one unit that gets my super special ultra patriotic medal of being a 10/10 among 9.99/10's, it'd be the Canadian Highland Regiment, also known as the Black Watch, just because of their rebounding from the utter devastation that happened to the unit in World War 2.
