What, like in a fight? Because it's not really much of a contest in that case, the 40K Space Marines are specifically designed to be completely over-the-top unstoppable.

In terms of badassery though I'd go with Colonial Marines from the Alien franchise.

Space Marines. Lorewise, there is no contest.

Superb armor, superb weaponry, great armored support.
You forgot superb physiology.

Yeah, my money's on the Adeptus Astartes as well.

How about Spartan III's? The super-human cannon fodder soldiers that got shit done!
I'm not even joking. Their training starts when they turn 4. They're genetically enhanced to be taller, faster, stronger, and not succumb to shock or any type of battle wound. I mean, in Ghosts of Onyx, Dante had his whole side ripped open, his internal organs half spilling out and he kept fighting. They don't feel pain, they don't have fear, and they're highly trained. They don't care about dying because they were bred to die.

Oh, also this: Spartans never die.

Space Marines.

Why? Because they carry hand-submachine guns that shoot exploding bullets, machineguns (once again, exploding bullets) the size of motorcycles, giant chainswords, they have two hearts , their armour is grafted onto their skin, they live for centuries as holy warriors that bring the fight to the enemy (while "normal" humans can only hope to desperately defend their homes with advanced technology and extensive training).
And finally, they are so durable in combat that it is not uncommon for them to be injured beyond repair but still survive, in which case they're preserved in giant walking battlemechs, using their experience of battle to protect their brothers.

I hate to go with the SPESS MEHRENES! but yeah, them. Although I have heard that the soldiers from Starship Troopers were quite capable as well. I'm not that familiar with them though.

Space Marines take the cake for me though because these guys aren't human anymore. They aren't just some buffed up dudes who have super strength and better equipment. These guys' average weapon is essentially a fully automatic rocket propelled grenade launcher. They tower over regular humans, have several sets of essential vital organs, and have some new ones thrown in. Their armor is a huge ass suit that gives them even more strength and is connected to them in a way that allows for them to move rather quickly in it. And that's just the average trooper. Some of the tougher ones are known to have their arms ripped off or sustain grievous wounds and still keep fighting.

And if you decide to make them Chaos marines... well you get all that fun stuff from the regulars and you get to add in whatever funky daemonic gifts of weapons they have with them.

Of course you still have to respect the average Imperial Guardsmen. They're armed with a flashlight and a t-shirt and told to take on whatever horrors are in the galaxy. They do it and they die standing.

Commander Shepard, by himself.

And Shepard also starts with S and that means I don't have a low content post
QFT. I thought this thread was going to discus the various great space marines, not the generalized units.

Tough choice - Adeptus Astartes or Mobile Infantry? I think the Astartes would win out, if only through sheer tenacity, but the MI get around in something similar to a 40K Dreadnought, armed with miniature nuclear missiles.
None of the other options would even slow down either an Astartes or an MI. Sorry, Halo fans, that includes your Spartans - they'd be reduced to a stain on the ground in short order.

How can this guy NOT be a badass?
Because he doesn't have flexibility.

Shame on everyone who got that joke. :D
Does reach count?

Actually only some of the IIIs did not feel fear, thanks to Kurt's changes. Also, the training starts when they join, which is variable since the IIIs come mainly from the orphans of planets destroyed by the covenant, no near as systematic as the II's selection process.

It helps, but it always has to be settled in someone's private quarters afterward.

Spectre. As in Commander Shepard. And why wasn't he on the list of "s" soldiers?
Because Shepard is a man, not a group. I also think the Specters are not really "soldiers" either. They are of course superb in combat but they are closer to spooks.

To be fair the Spartans are also incredibly stronger, larger and faster than their UNSC Marine counterparts. They also have a vast array of biological upgrades, though not quite as extreme as that of Space Marines the results are similar in that they are stronger and faster than regular humans. Their armor also enhances they speed and strength so much that a non augmented marine would kill themselves trying to use it. The thing that makes them superior to Space Marines to me is their intellect and the fact that they are more agile and much faster. They may not be able to dish out or take as much, but they will make sure they never get hit and the other guy never gets rest.

Space marines hands down! Genetically modified super soldiers, equipped with he best tech the Imperium of Man has to offer and more zealous than the Pope on a bad day.

I mean come on they are the original sci-fi marines, they have numbers, tech and sheer strength. So either in a straight up fist fight or in a full on war out of all the options there Space Marines win.

Space Marines hands down. As for which space marines in particular? SPACE WOLVES!
This is correct. The Wolves were created as the Emperor's executioners, the ultimate sanction, willing and able to devastate even other Astartes Legions, which they imply to have done three times. They were viewed as the hardest legion even by the Luina Wolves, due to being completely nuts.
And have kept this pedigree for 10000 years.

Pretty much this. They have more personality than every other space marine ever brought to a screen.

Actually Starship Troopers were around far before Space Marines. The book came out in the mid 50s.

A space marine is basicly a spartan on steriods with tougher armor + extra internal organs, backup heart, hardend bones and can spit acid. Their arms/legs can get ripped of and still they keep on fighting, heck they probably start flinging their severed limbs as a weapon if nothing better was near. They fight day to day against enemies with better tech"tau, eldar, and sometimes necrons". They have been there and seen it all, constantly fighting for centuries.

So i vote for the guy who is trained and ready to fight different races of aliens, monsters, demons and psycics. Instead of the ones who only fought one or two races.
