No. I wouldn't be able to live with the fact that I killed a man for money. The thing is, I don't know who it's going to kill. It could be the president or someone in my family or someone important. So no I wouldn't.

Absolutely not.
Kill someone for something as contrite as money?
I'm not that selfish or insecure.

yes, think about it, almost 3 billion people live in underdeveloped country's we can miss those people.

and who cares, they will die anyway, I might press it a million times, and use that money to cure cancer, then eventually I will save more lives then I took.

Probably not. I wouldn't feel comfortable with the idea.

Although oddly enough, I'd probably wipe out most of humanity if I was given the chance. I just don't like the thought of being rewarded for it.

So here's the scenario. I give you a magic button. Every time you push this button a random person on Earth dies a horrible death, and you get $100. Would you push it? If so, how many times?

Personally, I would not. Even though I would not get caught, I don't think I could deal with the guilt of knowing I was responsible for somebody's death. So, what about you, Escapist?
Sounds an awful lot like a movie coming out soon...
Call me someone that lives under a rock, but what film are you referring to?
Called something like "The Box." Think it has Reese Witherspoon. Anyways, it's exactly like what you said, only with 1 million dollars per push as opposed to 100.

Of course. I would push that button several thousand times, as the odds of me dying are less than 1 in 7000000000.

Is it bad that I said "Yes I would." when I saw the title, but before I could read the OP?
Same here actually =p

Can I ask a question?

If I press the button, am I gonna get the axe? Premise is saying that one person dies in the world. However, they never specified if the person who pressed the button would the one that died..

Well someone is pretty excited about The Box movie. It sounds interesting, so I think I'll watch it. As for the question at hand, I'd test my button mashing skills on that, for sure!
And then prove that the theory that one kid dies in Africa every second is wrong.
MAAAAANY MORE do.

Being genre savvy I know there'd be some other horrific hidden catch, like the first five 'random' people would be your family.

So no.

not if i'd kill a random person.
but if i could choose the person...
... hell i'd do it!

That's the reason why someone recommended the manga deathnote to me. It was like "hey, that's totally me in the story!" ;)

The odds of any given person dying is over 1 in 6,800,000,000. The population is in a state of growth. At any time somewhere on the world there is someone dying, at every moment in time. Even if you could prove the button was indeed killing someone, pressing it twice a day would be more than enough money, and would mean that the population would still be fine for you to kill loads, and still not have the economy collapse on you making your $100 per dead head worthless.

If I was seriously given this option I would spend a while thinking about it, and only use it in desperation. Although anyone alive can die at any given time (heck, it's possible the entire planet could be destroyed at any given second, and we'd have no warning), taking people before there time could still have major repercussions, even if it was people you never personally knew yourself. What if the first death was the guy who ultimately would've lived long enough to be your one true love, or someone who someday was destined to save your life? The chaos theory application of what could be attached to a button that can kill any random person for money makes each press a very tough decision, even if you're desperate for money.
