Well someone is pretty excited about The Box movie. It sounds interesting, so I think I'll watch it. As for the question at hand, I'd test my button mashing skills on that, for sure!
And then prove that the theory that one kid dies in Africa every second is wrong.
MAAAAANY MORE do.

Being genre savvy I know there'd be some other horrific hidden catch, like the first five 'random' people would be your family.

So no.

not if i'd kill a random person.
but if i could choose the person...
... hell i'd do it!

That's the reason why someone recommended the manga deathnote to me. It was like "hey, that's totally me in the story!" ;)

The odds of any given person dying is over 1 in 6,800,000,000. The population is in a state of growth. At any time somewhere on the world there is someone dying, at every moment in time. Even if you could prove the button was indeed killing someone, pressing it twice a day would be more than enough money, and would mean that the population would still be fine for you to kill loads, and still not have the economy collapse on you making your $100 per dead head worthless.

If I was seriously given this option I would spend a while thinking about it, and only use it in desperation. Although anyone alive can die at any given time (heck, it's possible the entire planet could be destroyed at any given second, and we'd have no warning), taking people before there time could still have major repercussions, even if it was people you never personally knew yourself. What if the first death was the guy who ultimately would've lived long enough to be your one true love, or someone who someday was destined to save your life? The chaos theory application of what could be attached to a button that can kill any random person for money makes each press a very tough decision, even if you're desperate for money.

I'd pay to do it in that case...

There are some people that really do just need to die.

I Reckon the U.S. Military would win the bid for the button pressing rights mind you.

Well about 146,000 people per day but I doubt I'd have a good chance of picking off a 90 year old with cancer as apposed to a father with 3 mouths to feed.

Plus, only $100? You cheapskate... I want 1 million like in the movie.

I would push it every time I'm low on cash. But only if their money comes to me. I don't want to fuck up world economics.

I'd press it twice.

Wait a minute, $100 are useless to me in the UK. What are the exchange rates for the button?

Wait, the button kills people AND I get money?

Sweet! The button would be broken before I'm done.

take it to the post office. You'd get about £60 for $100. That's not the full exchange rate, but they charge to exchange money. Not that it'd matter, you could just make more.

If I could choose the person, then yes I would, as there are lots of people the world would be better without.
If I couldn't choose, but the value was better, say £1,000,000, then I would, because I could save more lives with £1,000,000 than the random one that was lost.

But, if it was random and only $100, then no, I wouldn't.

In actuality if I was faced with this decision I'd only push it once, wince take the measly amount of money and feel guilty for the rest of my life and try and research all the people that died that day and try and figure out for the rest of my life who I killed and if they deserved it. During the course of my life, I'd probably push it a couple more times thinking it's the snooze button on my alarm and then finally on my deathbed I'd tap it rapidly for as long as could taking out as many as I could as I left this world.

What's the number of people born in 1 second?

roughly 3-4? how many die? 1-2?

So that makes it roughly 1 extra person a second.

Given that you can't press that button every second 24/7

I say do it for 5 hours a day?

Stop when you have about a 100k, short on a stock.

If you make money, yay you have millions.

If you lose money, go back to that button and repeat.
