Interesting bit of information I'm surprised hasn't made more headlines: Part of the redesigned Xbox 360's features is the 100% complete elimination of its famed "Red Ring of Death" or "OMGWTF" as its better known by. New technology has enabled the company to permanently fix the red ring...

...by swapping the red lights for more green ones.

According to website "The Consumerist", a detailed spec sheet for the new Xbox 360 reveals the quiet change, but does it imply that RROD is impossible for the new console, or is it just a design flaw that'll be changed back once early adopters (because that's what you'll be if you buy one) begin complaining of being unable to diagnose their dead consoles via pretty red lights?

...So they stop red-ringing...

By turning them into green rings...

Which are supposed to be there in actual gameplay...

...Bureaucratic GENIUS!

So... they didn't eliminate the problem, just tried to cover it up with a new color?

Thats like covering large cracks in a building with paint.

Just wait 'til the US gouvernment hears of this, they'll replace their soldier's blood with maple syrup so no one can bleed to death anymore. Watch out for the immortal Army!

Only if you're silly enough to try and move it when its spinning. Hardly a problem unless you plan on playing on a trampoline.

OT: The problem that caused the red lights was fixed apparently so it doesnt matter what colour they are.

Was that a joke? If so, I'm not laughing.

OT: That's pretty damn stupid. So now instead of the red ring of death we get the four players of death. Yep nothing can go wrong here. Nothing at all.

A bit cocky of them, eh?

Honestly; I think the new consoles will stop red ringing in most cases; larger heat sync + more ventilation = Video card less likely to crack.

If logic is wrong, however, then Microsoft is in a puddle of shit. It could be flipped on them that they disguised the RROD to say "Its not broken, pay to fix it"

I like how people are already presuming that this is some sort of cover-up maneuver, when the explanation could be one of several things. Maybe there wasn't enough room for the red lights/maybe they were cut for cost reasons? Sounds silly, I know, but it is a possibility.

EDIT: The explanation will likely have nothing to do with the root cause of the RROD, as the red ring segments were intended to help tech support give quick diagnosis for problems (one segment was the cables being plugged in the wrong way, for instance.) The triple ring segment that signaled the RROD will likely still be there: whether or not it will be displaying that symbol for the same problem as it used to is another matter.

No matter the explanation, it is not as though Microsoft is trying to cover the lack of red lights up.

That has to do with the disk speed. Blue ray can run slower spins because the data is packed "tighter" onto the disk. Even still the 5400RPM rate is a bit slow in the PS3 which means you have to install some of the larger games unless you want creeping death load times.

I don't know about you but I would rather it ate a few disks of people stupid enough to move the console while it was on and reading a disk then having to install every game like you have to with the PS3.

The red ring is no mystery. Even I know what causes it. I cannot fathom how this was not caught during development. More likely it was but they figured the obsessive amount of hours of play you had to put in before the issue would occur under the conditions they tested was more then anyone would see. Likely they had a fairly clean test environment, and not a home with pet hair and loads of dust, then shoved in a corner where it gets next to know air circulation. Even still, I bought a 360 right after they came out, and it took my roommate who didn't work getting obsessed with oblivion a week of played it every waking minute to finally cause the system to red ring. Hasn't happened since. I wouldn't see how they wouldn't beef up the heat removal from key areas, especially where they know most of the failures to occur in the new version. Sure heat pipes and the like cost money but it costs far more to support the consoles at the failure rates they saw before.

If you didn't find it funny why the crap bother to tell us?!? that's the most redundant thing anyone could have said. So arrogant. God I hate the internet...lol

OT - colour change or no, if the problems are fixed then we all win, or another problem arises to take its place. Which is more likely.

All the RROD problems got fixed when they released the Jasper chips anyways. My first 360 was a Xenon, and it had more than it's share of RROD problems, but when it finally kicked the bucket I got one of the ones with a Jasper chip, and I haven't ever had a problem with it. Hopefully, they'll be putting Jasper chips into the slim.

Microsoft: Now. we are redesigning the Xbox360 and we need to get Rid of it's biggest flaw, The Red ring Of Death. and still keep it nice looking and smaller than the original. any Ideas?
Joe: hmm... How about we Change the colour of the rings from Red To green? Boom No more Red Ring Of Death.
Microsoft: That... Is... The Greatest Idea I have ever heard Joe!

But I keed. apparantley it has Bigger vents so it over heats less often wich I think was the main cause of the RROD. so so long as no one blocks it and doesnt keep it running for 72 hours straight It should be Red Ring free or Green ring? erm... Lets Just call it Xbox Death. yeah. It should Be Xbox Death Free

Sounds like something Microsoft would come up with, but the design of their new Xbox 360 probably means they took care of the Red Ring of Death and probably caused something very similar to occur because they didn't check to see what the cause was connected to.

Still, they tried. Who knows, they may have actually fixed it entirely. In which case, how will I get a new litter? This one is prime for breeding!

I just hope the HDD is still detachable...

snip

It's how they do it in China.

OP: So now we can call it GROD? I think that sounds like one big mofo with a club used to beat his enemies!
Grod made me lol sounds like some kind of ork, "Grod, smash!".

Urm, what? It's a few games, not all games on the PS3.

On topic. They release a brand spanking new slim dinted console with the exact same problem, although probably less likely to happen? Is thou shitting me? Why not find out how to 99.9% eliminate the problem THEN release the console, seems to be the best idea.

Ah well, I suppose I could've done better. Twas just a try to transfer the same logic to a completely unrelated subject.

Actually there is always a chance of it happening, and when you live in a house with animals even the slightest tap can send a disc to it's death...
