Whatever the case is, whether its hackers, this anon fellow, or just general server maintenance, the network is down. It's not the end of the world. The fact that the online service available to the Playstation comes at no upfront cost other than the purchase of the system is a nice added feature of the system. The Xbox comes with an online service too. And it's free as well. At least, most of it's services are free. If you actually want to take the game you're playing online and do multiplayer battles or partake in co-op stories, then you have to pay for the service. Does that make the entire Xbox Live experience better? Not really, I don't think. If I want to buy a game or DLC, I could do that on the Xbox and not have to pay for it, except the credits that it costs to do so. I can do the same on the PS3, but buy it with actual money. If I want to take a game online, something I don't regularly do, I can do that on the PS3 free of charge where I need to spend money to play online.
So, online capabilities are standout features of both games. However, on one hand you have to pay to play, the other you don't. Hmmm. I don't see why there is a fight over "you get what you pay for." Cuz in both case you're not forced to pay for anything online. Heck, you're not even forced to go online unless you need updates. And yes, the Membership costs for XBL I'm sure goes to maintaining the servers. I think that's why PSN started the Playstation Plus; a membership that allows you to get content before those without it, get DLC and other PSN merchandise for lower costs or even free, and still be able to play online. I have a feeling proceeds from those memberships go into the potential maintenance of the PSN servers and network. I could very well be wrong. I could also be wrong, but I'm sure most of the online games have dedicated servers through their developers to be able to play online and the PSN and XBL connect to those servers to play, granted different servers for each system.
It's a shame that ANOTHER thread devolves into a "this is better than that" argument. I guess I've just gotten over the fact that both systems are out there, both systems are great systems, both have steller libraries, both have online play and both provide countless hours of gaming experience and fun for the player. I think we forget that this is why we buy video games and the systems we own. To have fun. And yeah, it sucks when the networks go down, but whether it's hackers or just some general maintenance, these things happen and it'll be just fine.
