I was lucky enough to be working in a videostore at the time those two consoles came out, so I was able to try both of them out before I decided which one to buy.

I eventually decided on the PS1, mostly because of that ridiculously large and absurdly impractical N64 controller.

During the years that followed, as I saw various ads for the two systems, I found myself constantly reminded that I'd made the right choice:

PS1 commercials would always boast yet another new addition to the excrementload of awesome games available for it - while the N64 ads tended to focus on the fact that the console was now available in several new, fancy colors!

I like a lot of things about the PS1 dont get me wrong, but I still enjoyed the 64 more.

I didn't own either system I had neighbors who had one or the other.

I was exposed to both pretty much equally, and I came to both with an objective opinion. They were both pretty great and invoke incredible feelings of nostalgia, but N64 games were clearly more memorable and catered dramatically more towards multiplayer (You had to buy a multitap for four player PSone, what crap). And even though PSone went with CDs, it didn't seem to give them an advantage. The graphics weren't much better than N64. While the controller design and decision to go with cartridges were stupid, it certainly made N64 an interesting console. Personally, I thought the cartridges felt better to hold, and possessed a much more "Classic Video Game" feel to it. Little things, really, but they count.

Ps1 for game selection, but N64 for sentimental value. The 'tendo has a place in my heart that the Ps1 will never replace.

Also I don't like final fantasy, its a generic RPG in the sense that it created the standard. Its the coke of RPGs and coke is nothing to fangirl over.

N64 just because I never had PS1. I played all the good Play station games on PS2. I loved those games, but N64 had Majora's Mask and Donkey Kong 64 so that gets my vote.

PS1 was better for me. Firstly cost. N64 games could retail up to £65 a game! PS1 averaged at £40 or less. PS1 had the "platinum" range of games, which was a great business move IMO. In terms of game libraries, PS1 had the larger more robust one. N64 had some truly great games, Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye, Mario 64, but it also had the worst game ever made, Superman 64! PS1 started many series such as Tekken, Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Grand Theft Auto, Gran Turismo, Need for speed, Alone in the dark, Army Men, Command and Conquer (granted better on PC, Cool Boarders, Crash Bandicoot, just to name a few and drastically increased the popularity of JRPGs.

Also the fact that the PS1 was MEANT to be the next nintendo but the deal went sour meant that nintendo got beaten or at least equalled by something that should have been theirs in the first place. Who screwed who on the deal I forget.

Oh, almost forgot - JONAH LOMU RUGBY!!!! The only game where I have ever played as Singapore and had the great Bill McLaren as a commentator "The voice of rugby".

PS1 is the better MACHINE, but N64 is the one EVERYONE had. It's kinda like the 360 Vs. Ps3 of their time. The PS3 is a better MACHINE, but the 360 gets all the love.

OT: I think that the N64 is everyone's favorite gaming system, simply because of the feeling of nostalgia. I still bust it out to play Megaman 64 or Turok. Those are great.

I had both and I liked games on both my consoles, especially Golden Eye. But PS1 games where vast, more people had ps1's so you could trade games easier. I just played PS1 more than I did my N64.

Weren't the N64 and the PSX supposed to be the same system?

Maybe that one would have been the best.
Playstation was originally meant to be a CD add on for the Super Nintendo, but Nintendo backed out of the deal at the last minute, so Sony made the PS1 console to spite them.

OT: I loved the PS1. I don't care if it's nostalgia blinding me, I always found the games to have a more epic feel than N64 games. More immerse.
