So mediocrity is good enough for you. Everyone copied Tetris because it revolutionized electronic puzzle games by creating them, when it was released in Russia near riots broke out at any public machine that played it and it was installed in nearly every Soviet computer that could play it, Soviet Russia was very boring. Tetris made the Game Boy, if you owned a Game Boy you had Tetris.
As for the console comparison most people defend the PSP by saying how it's like a PS2 and a significant part of it's early catalog were console ports so I think the comparison is fair but I will grant you this, I have never camped out for a handheld release because no handheld game justified a midnight release. That is a damn shame but handhelds are rigidly casual and thus Sony's attempt at creating a hardcore handheld makes little sense. If I have to fight the controls it's a bad thing, be it a nub or a stylus.
The DS killer app is the same as the Game Boys, Pokemon and Shigeru Miyamoto's ips. Pokemon and Shigeru Miyamoto almost by themselves saved Nintendo during the 90's while Sony rose to preeminence and Sega fell to the way side. Tetris and Nintendogs was being toted by the shills on morning tv when it they were released. They hardly even show a PSP in the commercials, remember the cheese you can take outside?
Even big name retailers have given the PSP a could shoulder by removing the UMD movies from shelves and rumor has it that Sony themselves may abandon it on the next iteration of the handheld.
Sony was not wrong for entering the handheld market but their execution is poor and they are paying for it.
Now we're calling it mediocrity? Have you played any PSP game at all? I'd hardly call Patapon 1+2, Loccorocco, Chains of Olympus, or Disgaia. Most have been well recieved, and there is a lot less shovelware on the PSP than DS.
So, okay, Tetris, I'll give you that, it did revolutionize the puzzle genre. But that's it. One handheld game, that's been reintergrated into so many different consoles/handhelds/PCs and in so many different versions now that has had so many rip offs. I wouldn't consider Tetris a "killer app" for Nintendo since there's so many other versions of the game on other consoles, Lumines being basically a Tetris rip off for the PSP with music which I've heard is also a nice game.
The thing is, the PSP isn't
just a portable games device, so it's advertised to different things.
This does not change the fact that the PSP has sold over 50 million units, half of the DSs units of 100 million. You can argue "yeah, but how many of them actually play
games!" and act all gamer elitis-y, but that doesn't change that it's
sold 50 million units. It's like saying to the Wii, it's sold over 40 million last I checked (50 million on wiki), "yeah, but how many of those people actually
played the damn thing in the past 6 months!". That still doesn't chage the fact that it's sold over 40 million units.
(the above was mainly a rant, not directed to you or whatever personally).
I hardly see comercials for either of them to be honest, but I guess that depends on where you live.
And HELLO!!! That's what Sony is said to be doing with the PSP Go! ! We're in the thread right now! I find that funny
