I know this sounds stupid in comparison to everything everyone else says but.

What I hate

hate so much

Is games where when you play them online... you have no option to mute individual people.

(or where it is so obscure to do so that most people are unaware of the option)

First one springs to mind. I was playing RDR with some buddies today and there was like a 9 year old announcing everything he was doing.

"I just shot a guy! WADHASKHWWOOOOWWW"
"OMG! I LEVELED!"
"I like horses!"

We had to switch servers only to find the next one had a guy playing his Jay Z as loud as he could into the headset.

Next server was same as the first only this kid spoke Spanish.

edit: Okay you can mute in that. I hadn't played in in like 5 months and forgot how. My point remains valid though.

invisible boundaries. i know that levels cant stretch on forever, but if im going to get to the edge, either make it a bottomless cliff, or a 50 ft wall made of diamonds so i cant break it down, cause if i see another 2 foot ledge or it just plain stops me, i will break.... stuff. thats preferably not mine.

Many many people have stated why regenerating health is better for design and difficulty, so that's not gonna ever go away.

I'd choose stunning from MMORPGs. Nothing like literally being unable to fight back.

Cheap/Imbalanced AI opponents instead of just challenging. MK9 Shao Kahn, I'm talking about you, you worthless pile of goat sick.

Escort missions where who you have to protect is a freaking dumbass.

Omniscient/All seeing AI opponents.

Rushing in games. Durrr herpa derrrp let's have half the game rarely be used.

Excessive Grinding (usually an MMO)

Cut-scenes in which my character could easily stop something from happening or something not feasible happens to them, or even just hard to believe interactions between NPCs.

Time limits where there is no acceptable reason for one to exist.

MMOs with 100000 factions you have to prove yourself to. Like World of WarCraft. No, no, no no no no - fuck YOU Avengers of Hyjal. I went back in time to help kill Archimonde, one of your most dangerous enemies. I helped kill Illidan, who was one of your people's biggest traitors. I helped kill Ragnaros, two OLD GOLDS, Onyxia THREE TIMES, Nefarian Twice, countless minions and other high profile enemies, Malygos, Kel'Thuzad, and the LICH KING, bane of all known creation. YOU assholes should be licking my boots clean, doing my laundry, and fetching me some random item. FUCK YOU WITH A RED HOT POKER. Give me your damn items and and be greatful for the opportunity.

Ahem.. But yeah, that gets annoying.

You can mute in RDR. Hit the back button (or select if PS3), go to players, scroll down to the person (like if you were inviting them to a posse), and hit mute.

OT: water levels, out of no-where stealth, time, and escort missions (If I wanted to play those types of missions I'd play a stealth game).

I really kind of hate escort missions, so escort missions.

FPSs love them though...

I don't mind regenerating health (when done correctly) and I really enjoy cover-based shooting, as long as it's first-person.

The one mechanic I would like to see erased from existence, is in space game where the spacecraft function as if they were fixed winged planes in atmosphere.

I also hate it when game make tactics and maneuvers mechanics.

Press A+L to barrel roll in the banshee for example. Or in the new Acecombat game where they actually have you go in to a starfox-esqe mini game every time you try to get up close for a gun kill and Pugachev's cobra and loops are now assigned to buttons.

Except all those reasons why regenerating health is good are bullshit. It is added because developers can't be arsed to add health kits or medic stations in levels.

Ah, hadn't played in a while and forgot how.

Regardless, there ARE some games where the 'no mute' exists or it's really fiddly to get to.
I've played many a racing game where the soundtrack has a sudden addition of a loud baby crying.

Turret/Vehicle sections. They're usually just padding.

Fast Regenerating Health. Slow regen and post-battle regen is great to avoid having to hunt for medkits for hours, but mid-battle regen removes some of the tension.

Lives system.

Games need to move on from this arcade mechanic of lives. There are no coins to enter, therefore there is no need to keep people playing through money. Lives need to die :p

Combat. No seriously, not permanantly, but I'd love to see gaming survive for, say, a year, without combat. Writing would get better in an instant.

I honestly couldn't have said this better myself.
One I might add though is bad platforming. We all love fluently jumping from platform to platform as Alucard in Symphony of the Night, but frustrating platforming can be the bane of a game.

I am surprised almost nobody said "escort missions" yet.

God i hate those.
Of course it is rather fun if you are the one to escorted by someone.(Ala half-life episode 1)

But if this does not count i choose leveling upp in multiplayer and giving a damn near instakill weapon on level 40 or so.
Makes it very annoying for the new people.

As much as everyone is hating on Health Regen, I really loved the way the Brothers in Arms series dealt with it. Your squad mates would yell things at you to the tune of "Get your head down, they're not going to miss every shot!" as the bullet whizzes near you, rather than hitting you.

OT: I don't know what you'd call it but chapters or segments of a game where they throw out the mechanic or playstyle the entire game has stuck with and replace it with something else. Examples include Alone in the Dark with its little 'drive the car about, then you can get back to the survival horror TPS and the rubber boat gunfight in MW2 (I think the lack of control over movement is what irritated me there though.)

I'd remove turret sections. Be it the Final boss of Dead Rising
The final boss of Dead Rising was a hand-to-hand combat fight. The part BEFORE the final boss was a turret section.
I still consider that part of the boss fight.
