1) Forcing you to play with a large group of people from overseas, and then giving them host. I count this as a game mechanic because it is so easily avoidable! PC Gaming is awesome and never runs into this problem whenever dedicated servers are around. They are awesome. Console games on the other hand FORCE you to play with someone from God knows where, gives them host, then has the balls to penalize you for leaving the game. Yes I realize many games address this now (by use of a local filter) but it still occasionally happens. I also DO count this as a game-play mechanic but it EFFECTS the game-play.

2) ... That's all really... I've played games all my life and seen every cliche' imaginable. I really don't mind. Sure I'd love it if COD was realistic where if you get shot you continue to bleed out... if you get shot in the leg your movement is reduced etc. That would be great, but I'm happy with what it is at the moment. Just fix competitive multi-player issues for games.

anything that has to do with hitting moving targets with a cannon from far away, especially when they can do damage to you (ie the cannon segment in dead space one)
and falling and dodging things as you fall, (ie the segment from wet)

I would say fun, since it seems that a lot of people enjoy that and I'm a selfish prick who thinks the world revolves around me and my efforts to spite everybody.

Things like slide puzzles in a game that doesn't require them. If I'm not playing Professor Layton, I don't want to have to do an old school puzzle, especially if it's a "Oh yeah, somehow moving these weird statues around onto their proper squares means you can move on." I'm looking at you Twilight Princess.

To clarify, I don't mean any kind of puzzles, just really arbitrary ones, that require less intelligence and exploration, and more sheer dumb luck or puzzle knowledge.

I would get rid of the mechanic that has RTS games play without bases or economies... Oh, wait, that doesn't count. Darn.

I don't think I've ever experienced swimming in a game to be enjoyable or even feel justified at all, so unless someone can make swimming meaningful, getting rid of that would be nice.

Also, morality systems, especially ones that give rewards for maxing out evil or good, are lame. I really enjoy variety and moral problems in games, but I prefer to be able to be the moral judge of my own actions and their consequences, rather than having the game tell me what's good and what's bad, and forcing me to go good or evil to get the best rewards.

Random stat increases at levelling up.

They SERIOUSLY piss me off and should be killed with fire.

Debuffs or crippling moves that don't have an guaranteed affect rate. Its more a pet peeve, I know, but it turns what should be a strategic move into a luck-based one.

I can't believe no one has called this yet ...

FUCKING ESCORT MISSION!

It's difficult enough fighting wave after wave of enemies without having to protect a worthless lil' ***** (Leon Help!) who bends over to any hostiles she sees, and likes to plant her face into walls, because she was born without a brain. As if that isn't bad enough, her health bar is slightly bigger than a hamster's penis (she dies in 2-3 hits) and of course you can't give the important person you're protecting some protection, or a gun! Nooooo, now that would be silly ... FUCK YOUR ESCORT MISSIONS! AND FUCK YOU FOR CREATING THEM!!!!

Oh and also - Grinding and fetch quests. Seriously RPGs, please don't pat it out, if you ran out of ideas just tell me, i'll understand

Regenning health in FPSes.

I know I've probably been Ninja'd x a billion.

If I had to go with something else, probably... Wow, with the obvious out of the question this is really hard to answer.

Ok, I've been sitting here for 10 minutes trying to think of something. I can't.

Not trying to sound like Yahtzee here, but quicktime events. Seriously, it's such a lame way of trying to make a cutscene interactive. You press a few buttons, and your character does all sorts of crazy sh!t that you really didn't cause... I was really driven crazy in the Force Unleashed (1 and 2) boss fights. Once you whittled down the bosses' health enough, you could enter a quicktime event to finish them off. You press I think a total of 3 buttons, and Starkiller does crazy acrobatics with his lightsaber and the force. I would honestly rather have to watch it as a regular cutscene and revel in the awesomeness, then participate in a weak attempt to get me involved.

WATER FUCKING LEVELS

There is no way I can possibly tell you how much I hate them to death. I have drowned one too many times trying to find that last star/coin/enemy/whatever so I go to a new area.

Princess Peach better give me something more than a kiss on the cheek for savin her ass for the billionith time in a row.
Yes yes yes, a thousand times yes

Also, I would like to point out that objectively there is nothing wrong with regenerating health or cover based mechanics in and of themselves. However, you have to make sure they work within the theme of the game, and furthermore you shouldn't use them both together. Either regenerating health and no cover, or cover and no regenerating health.

I'm curious. For those of you who hate QTEs, do the reaction commands in KH2 count?

You know, I'm talking about the ones where you're mashing x and triangle over and over during the final boss, or the ones during the Hydra boss fight. The ones where you pick up an enemy and use his beam to kill other enemies don't really count IMO because that's more of a context-sensitive command than an actual QTE.

Hmm, to spice things up a bit, no weapons. See if anyone can make an appealing game without weapons. There is some like limbo or amnesia so it could be interesting.

Regenerating health, quick time events, cover system. When we get rid of those maybe games can make a recovery from mostly mediocre to great :p

Escort or defense missions. These kinds of missions really piss me off, and I just want them gone.

Although I heard Ico, a game where you had to escort some girl almost the entire time, was pretty good.
