Oh jesus fucking christ. I pity you guys downunder so bloody much, Michael Atkinson's going to have an orgasm over this one.
I don't pity anyone in a democratic country. The majority gets who the majority votes for.

The really over-dramatic "effects" of video gaming can really be boiled down to, "Anti-Socialism" in the minds of non-gamers, but this doesn't even compare to cancer.
Cancer is a disease which kills a staggering amount of people every year. Truly staggering.
Video gaming is a hobby that many over-use, turning it into its own little genre of hobby. Spending time playing video games takes ime away from socializing, but so does computers, televisions, sports, and any other hobby one can think of.
Cancer is a terminal disease that invokes fear in the minds of today's society.
They could compare video games to terrorism and get the same fucking effect!

Ahhh, pseudo-science. Always there to reliably produce lies when you need it.
Hopefully, people of autralia will see though this obvious misinformation.. and do something about it.

Well crap... does this mean we'll be banned from public places to prevent second-hand video game exposure?

I remember (well, not personally) when the news thought that moving images would over-stimulate viewers, and so would only show stills. Or when Rock and Roll and Jazz were condemned as songs of the devil. Now it's vidjagames.

I propose this:
1. Place all these fools in a space shuttle and launch them a safe distance away from Earth.
2. Nuclear launch detected.

Oh was that violent, because I've played a video game? Isn't it ironic the only time I feel the least bit violent is when people make ridiculous claims about things? (Such as "video games relating more to violence than smoking does to cancer"? SERIOUSLY?)

I just lost someone very close to me from lung cancer. Boggles my mind how anyone can compare video games to lung cancer. People who say that have never watched a loved one slowly die from it.

Do we? I don't recall that bit, and I'm pretty damn sure I played the whole thing.

The idiocy just continues, I've stopped being surprised about it now.....

Usually it is America that is the source of these sorts of moronic speculations. It is nice to see another country taking over for a change.

If they're findings are so clear, why aren't they published in peer-reviewed journals rather than the general media?
Simple answer; it's not real science at all and completely goes against the vast amount of research on this subject that already exists.
These forms of media just love sensationalism, they need it to sell in this multi-media world. As soon as they die, we'll be left with new media that can afford to actually check things out and question sources. Much like the above piece.

Sigh... I remember when science was "proving" that comic books caused violence in children (I say remember, I'm only 18; I learned about it in class).

When are these old fools going to accept that society's problems aren't caused by one simple thing?

The tragic thing is, fifty years down the line some of us will be making massive hypocrites out of ourselves and harping on about the adverse affects of those damn holo-chambers.

"where did Dr Warburton go? oh look he's over there, beating that dead horse"

ok I absolutley love violent games and I have never been a serious fight or assaulted somebody so how does that fit into this little theory? That's annecdotal evidence though so pretty worthless in the grand scheme of things.

I'd say the more important point would be the flaw in logic - if a game is considered quite violent then it's usually given an 18, maybe a 15 if it's not too excessive. Perhaps the question should be not if kids learn violence from computer games (as the behavioural model of psychology would have us believe) but how are they getting hold of such violent games? If the parents are buying it for them then maybe you should tell the parents to stop it put a fine on it or something. I know they've definately got a lot hotter in this country on asking for ID for 18 games so why not in other countries?

Also you can't say for definate if it is computer games causing all this violence as you have no control sample to check against."Studies" usually come from a source so if he is incapable of quoting a source then it's more than likely that this is just complete drivel.

Hmmm, 2 things, 1: Age ratings are there for a reason, if kids are playing GTA, it's the parents fault.

2: I've been playing things like GTA for years now, and I have never; murdered anyone, stolen a car, hired a hooker, infiltrated secret bases etc etc. Basically what I'm trying to say through my equally misinformed statements, is that I play violent videogames, and i'm not very violent.
If I am violent, it's probably more to with the fact I'm a teenager with raging hormones.

I'm not sure if I should laugh or cry...I think I'll settle with laughing, as I'm far away from those backward people and can enjoy my games(uncut if I import them - it's cheaper anyway).
