Rumor: High School Musical Heartthrob Offered Lead Role in Akira Movie

Ya know I've been hearing a lot about this live action akira and seeing that zack efron is in it. Well that doesn't sound bad zack efron wants to be a real actor and that sounds good. Now about this akira and bare with me when I ask this.
Who or what is Akira? Seriously. Never seen the show.

Zac Effron is a pussy? Why, is it because he is prettier than you? Becuase you feel threatened that women swoon over him? Can you only enjoy movies where the leading male is just as/uglier than you? Is your insecure narcisism that deep?
V8 Ninja has a very good point. In the movie, at least, Kaneda seems to be an umblemished and clean-cut guy with a lot of charisma and is popular w/the ladies. That part by itself seems to fit Effron to a Tee. And I have only seen Mr. Effron w/dark hair, so I dont know where the "blond" comment comes from. As for the other aspects of the character and his role in the story, there is really only one way to find out if Mr. Effron is up for it.
My thoughts and fears echo the other posters. The writers and directers are far more likely to screw things up than Effron could, especially if they try to make it PG-13. Pretty boys can break out of their smarmy shells if they try. Look at Daniel Ratcliff. He acted in a stage production of "Equus". For the uninformed, it is a story about a mentally disturbed boy w/a serious horse fetish. In the play Ratcliff runs around naked, humps a naked girl, and stabs the eyes of horses out with a knife, to name a few decidedly non-wholesome, pretty boy actions.
If Effron does take the role I invite him to go whole-hog like MR. Ratcliff and leave us males thinking "that's hardcore" and the ladies feeling creeped out and possibly dirty for having swooned over him w/such blind enthusiasm. Actually "Harry Potter" getting all hot-n-bothered and stabby-stabby over My Little Pony creeps me out too, and BRAVO to him for taking me there.

Like others have said, Efron is a pretty good actor. Seriously, see 'Me and Orson Welles', he was fantastic in that movie. He has the potential to do more gritty and more interesting roles, he shouldn't be cursed forever by the stigma of 'High School Musical'.
Also I don't actually know much about this anime so I might have to read up about it or try and see if I can watch it at some point. I'm more concerned about them making yet another live action anime movie, because I mean, those are always such bold successes.

I'm a lil shaky on whether or not i can accept Efron playing this roll. Shotaro is a crazy-ass and i've yet to see him get his chops on this type of character so my judgment is reserved for now. However..a PG 13 rating? Good luck selling that one.
