That was very unexpected. A Dr Who film.
Let us hope it won't be a disaster like the last one. I think Depp is a good choice, he's a very versatile actor.
What was wrong with the last movie?
There's been talk of bringing nuWho to the big screen since the Nine/Ten/Rose saga. I think most fans like the idea of Tennant being the movie Doctor, simply because he's so recognisable in the role. I think Depp as a villain would work wonderfully, but putting him in the leading role would backfire so badly. You don't put someone in the role because they're a big-name star, especially in a role like the Doctor - one with such a dedicated and long-established fanbase. Either get Tennant to do one last trip in the TARDIS
(and let's face it, there's a human Doctor currently shacked up with Rose ANYWAY)
, or get Matt Smith to play it, because I think it would be the best option. Seeing Matt in the movie, then seeing him every week as the Doctor is more likely to hook more fans in, because they are already emotionally attached to this actor who plays this incredible role.

There was nothing inherently WRONG with Paul McGann's turn as the Doctor, its just that it wasn't accepted very well. That and I'm not sure many people even heard about it.

That's my view, anyway.

This smells as fishy as Unhygienix on a hot day (I wonder if anybody will get that reference).

Why would the BBC give the go ahead to a Doctor Who movie when the TV series is still going strong?

And why would they give the job the show's former head writer, who has absolutely no experience with feature films (unlike, oh I don't know, Stephen Moffat)?

None of this adds up.
Is that a reference to Asterix? Unusual.
Indeed it is.

Yeah, I couldn't really think of anything comical that smelled of fish.

If I'm not mistaken there was a Doctor Who film in the past.. But my memory sucks at remembering things.

I sincerely hope this is not true. I do like Johnny Depp, but I honestly think he'd ruin it. Why not cast the current star, Matt Smith?

Other then that, it better be a British film.
Doctor Who is as English as can be and they want to cast an AMERICAN? Gah, it's just like Harry Potter. The filmmakers wanted to use American actors for that one as well. Thank God J.K. Rowling stopped them.

This better be False... why the mention of Captain Jack... oh... not... ah...

Why can't they use Matt Smith? He's a damn fine Doctor >.>
Oh, and Rory Williams~ (Played by Arthur Darvill)... damn, he looks... nice...
I just hope this opportunity isn't butchered >.>
It's a movie adaptation, so basically, a whole new story all together =P

The only Doctor Who film I would support at this stage would be one where they bring back Paul McGann and show the end of the Time War and his regeneration into Christopher Eccleston.

Anyway, while RTD isn't the best story teller in the world, the supposed synopsis for this film sounds so unbelivebly stupid that it has to be fake.
NOW we're talking!

I'll claim idiocy right now and say, isn't there another Dr. Who SHOW on right now? Why not use the guy who's in that show.
a) Shooting schedules for Doctor Who are fairly intense so he wouldn't have time.
b) The point of a film would be to draw new people into the series and the only real way to do that would be to have a big name star in it and if they had a big star as a companion, the fans would react badly because of the risk of the Doctor ending up playing second fiddle.

I have to admit I can't imagine the BBC signing off on this. Even the last TV movie was written into the main continuity by showing the regeneration and so I doubt the BBC would allow anything that could be seen as stand alone.

No thankyou. Is it that hard to give the role to someone at least from the UK? Doctor Who is iconic, and it isn't just 'some character'. I sure hope that Davies is not going to give the role to Depp. Does everything have to get pimped to the Hollowood lechers in order to make a few extra bucks from movie goers that probably wouldn't see the movie anyway? Keep Doctor Who in its homeland.

I would love to see this happen. Sadly if a movie does come out it'll probably be an americanised piece of crap. Probably set in New York. Hopefully this rumour is just a rumour and not factual.

That's great. Now Depp can ruin other peoples childhood memories too. He will never be forgiven for making Willy Wonka into a MJ based pedo. -No troll

Don't worry, if its written by RTD it woun't be an Americanised piece of crap. It'll be worse!

How would this even fit in? The doctor only has one regeneration left after Matt Smith, and I highly doubt that they'd burn it on a movie. And then spoil Smith's final episode.

Tragically I can see this happening just as much as I think it's false. If it's true then I've lost a lot of respect for Davies. If you leave the show, don't start writing more of the same thing.

THAT I would like to see. Something that's already happened, wouldn't effect the series now and could be taken into canon if it's good (like any good Batman story). I'd love to see Ecclestone again. A movie would be a great way to - not really make up for, but I'm struggling finding the words - one series.

Why don't they just cast the current actor?

Everything gets a bit disjointed then, doesn't it?

I'll just make this one point, and it's the reason I don't watch the new series of Dr Who with Melty McWaxface in it: Russel T Davis says not to worry, that fans will be catered to with the return of the Daleks.

Newsflash Davis, you ignorant twat, the fans have been yelling "Stop with the fucking Daleks already" at you for the last TWO SEASONS of Dr Who. When you're into your fourth or fifth iteration of the Parallel Universe Device, you should probably give the fuck up and come up with some new enemies for the Doctor to fight, you know, like the people who did the old series' did with ten quid and some papier machet.

I can live with this, Depp is good enough for me to be satisfied with him playing...anything.

My two requests would be
1) Get Moffat to write it instead, the man's a genius.
2) Don't let Burton direct it, he's good, but this isn't his kind of film.
