I'll just make this one point, and it's the reason I don't watch the new series of Dr Who with Melty McWaxface in it: Russel T Davis says not to worry, that fans will be catered to with the return of the Daleks.

Newsflash Davis, you ignorant twat, the fans have been yelling "Stop with the fucking Daleks already" at you for the last TWO SEASONS of Dr Who. When you're into your fourth or fifth iteration of the Parallel Universe Device, you should probably give the fuck up and come up with some new enemies for the Doctor to fight, you know, like the people who did the old series' did with ten quid and some papier machet.
Wait, you realise that RTD has nothing to do with the latest series, right?

The very idea disgusts and repeals me almost as much as the idea of a twilight based reality TV show... and that's saying something.

I think depp would be quite a good doctor (but nothing compared to tennant ^_^), but the movie itself will probably be crap.

I would like to see a time-war film if rtd is involved i didn't find his stories as good as stephen moffats but if you could get, paul mcgann, chris eccleston, timothy dalton you could do something quite cool with it, johnny depp could do the master i suppose but it'll probably never happen, the rumours of a dw film have been around for years now. Though if it did happen having david tennant or matt smith narrate it as a flashback type of film e.g 10th doctor telling the story to wilfred, rose or river song would be a nice nod to the series. It wont happen but it would be kinda cool. but a separate film with johnny depp should be destroyed and left on the shelf where it belongs.

But...why? What purpose does making a Dr. Who movie serve? And WHY would you have someone other than Matt Smith be playing the doctor? It doesn't make any sense! The TV show is fine! There doesn't need to be a movie. Please be a fabrication, please be a fabrication, for the love of GOD please be a fabrication.

Imagine this...
Instead of the THX sound "blast", we get treated to a THX-remix of "EX-TER-MIN-ATE!" :D

Depp is a great actor, but I really don't want this to happen... it'd just mess up the continuity something fierce.

I find it ironic that Depp, a man who turned down pretty-boy action movie roles (he turned down Speed before Keanu Reeves was offered the part) to avoid getting typecast, is now getting exactly that, he's like the go-to 'wacky guy' these days. I think he's a good actor, but needs to do more serious roles in my opinion. The Ninth Gate is probably my favourite Depp film because they guy actually gets a chance to act, opposite the superb Frank Langella.

Anyway, to the Doctor Who movie. Doctor Who has always and will always be a uniquely British franchise, there's just something about it (as with Hitchhiker's Guide) that can't be reproduced outside of Britain. If the world really needs a DW movie, then let's keep the current series cast, and bring in the big names to play unique roles we won't ever see again.

Matt Smith has done a fine job in the role, it really means something when you can take over from someone as beloved as David Tennant and not invoke much ire at all from fans.

I am aware yes, however A: the new series is continuing in his "fine tradition", see iDaleks in recent episode, and B: Davis is the one who made the comment.

Why Johnny Depp? I know they like to have big name stars do things nowadays, but all of the other Doctor Who movies were perfectly content to have the actual Doctors star in them. You know, the people who we recognise as the Doctor. It creates a nice sense of continuity, like this could actually be happening in the Doctor Who chronology.

The other problem with casting Johnny Depp is that it makes it all too easy to just write the movie off as someone's sci-fi story that they wanted to slap a big brand onto. Without the original actor or any sense of continuity to the show beyond the TARDIS, it's just 'a time travellor who flies round in a police box.' Ignore that everyone only ever calls him the Doctor and the movie suddenly has nothing to do with the source material.

Cast Matt Smith in it, or bring back Eccleston and Tenant and do a Five Doctors style adventure. Also, bring back Rose and Donna and all will be forgiven for the mediocre series that has just passed us by.

And if this turns out not to be true, so much the better for all involved I think.

I'm gonna say fabrication. I doubt the series is big enough in the US to attract Johnny Depp, and even then it would render the canon roadkill. However, the plot synopsis seems like bad fanfiction to me, so I'm going to assume this is fabrication until the BBC says otherwise.
