Am I the only one who thinks that Dovahkiin would be a baddass name to have. I wish my parents had named me that, I really do.

I wonder what "Dovahkiin" would shorten out to.

My guess is "Keen."
My guess is 18 years of being bullied.
Well yeah, obviously. But kids are vicious little fuckers. If they couldn't find some clever angle to make fun of his name, they'd just call him "******" or something.
Gweneth Paltrow named her kid "Apple". Argument invalid.

But seriously, games are becoming a bit more mainstream, what with Kobe Bryant showing up in Call Of Duty commercials and whatnot. He'll be fine as the years progress. People have been named after video game/movie characters before. Look at Zelda Williams.

Um, it's an exotic name. Unique.

And it's better than a lot of the names I hear people calling their children nowadays. I had to convince a friend to not name her child Orange. ORANGE.

And if he really hates it, like truly with a burning passion, he can get it changed.

And people are giving kids too much credit. If he's going to be bullied, it won't be due to the name. It has to rhyme with some obscene thing first before it becomes an easy target for bullying. At least in the first years.

No one will ever pronounce it the same though.

Zelda is a real name, just uncommon/rare.

Look at the bright side: He already has one of the most badass theme songs in existence.

Wait, what is with the bully posts? Why would he be bullied?

By the time he gets to kindergarden, 4-5 years will have passed. 4-5 year olds don't play Skyrim and they'll think it's a Serbian name or something. "Dovahkiin" is exotic, but it isn't something like naming your kid "Megatron" or "Darth Vader".

When he gets to Elementary school, kids still won't be playing Skyrim. I doubt people in grades 2-6 would play an old RPG they'll probably never have heard of.

When he gets to Highschool, Skyrim will be so far behind him that only a few hardcore RPG enthusiasts/nerds will give him a wink or a nudge and talk about how cool it is. While everyone else just knows him as "That kid who sounds like he's from Serbia". I don't see any of the logic you guys are presenting, he's not going to be bullied at all.

Furthermore, people criticizing the parents think they're doing this for the free swag. They're not, they're probably doing it because they're diehard fans.

It's no different than having a video game themed wedding or investing geek culture into any other part of your life. Although this is a bit extreme.
Exactly what I was thinking. Still....I'd rather have Dovakiin as my second name :p

Actually not too bad a name. It could be shortened to Keen, which is a whole lot less weird than a lot of the "normal" names people are giving their kids these days, or Dov, which I happen to know means "bear" in Hebrew. So on the small chance that he's Jewish, he has an actually badass name anyway.

I'm interested in how this will affect his career future. I guess he can't really go into politics huh?

FOOS-ROH!
That made me laugh.

OT: I don't see the big deal. If he gets shit for his name he will just get a name change.

Am I odd for actually liking the name Dovahkiin? I wouldn't bully a kid named Dovahkiin. He sounds like a bad ass.

EDIT: also, why the comments about his professional career? A name has nothing to do with their career due to it being just a name. If he has the right credentials then he'll be able to get whataver he wants as a job just fine.

EDIT2: also there's worse. Much worse. Did you know Jason Lee named his son Pilot Inspektor? Yeah, that's spelled wrong on purpose... His name is Pilot Inspektor Lee...

Yeah, the bullying as a kid and the weird looks whenever he does anything official (job appliactions, legal documents, passport control, bank accounts, etc.) for the rest of his life is really gonna be a whale of a time.

Why make his first name Dovahkiin?
It was just to name the kid it. Not necessarily the first name. You could have made any of his middle names it..

But now, he is Dovahkiin.
Thanks alot, mom and dad.
Hey, I've seen worse. What if your last name was "Butts"? Knew a kid like that.

What about "Dick Butkus"? He probably became an NFL player just to stop the gay jokes.

And I knew two guys named after Enoch, the son of Cain from the Book of Genesis. "Hey son, guess what? I named you after the son of the world's first murderer! Aren't you happy?"

Dovahkiin doesn't really sound all that bad. Kind of like "Joaquin" if you ask me. As long as the kid never explains what his name means and how he got it, I think he'll be okay.

And if worse comes to worst, he can always just go by his invented middle name. Nobody's going to know.

Ah, apparently you've never heard of congressemen Anthony Weiner [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Boehner].

I'd say the kid almost can't do anything BUT go into politics.

EDIT: Yes, I know Boehner is actually pronounced "BAY-ner", but it sure as hell looks like it's pronounced "boner".

Dova at 14 years old: Mom, dad, why did you guys give me just a complicated name?
Parents: Because we wanted free gaemz!
Its things like this that make teenagers become clinically depressed people!

So does Little Dovahkiin get a Steam pass as well? I'd put up with the name Dovahkiin if I got every Bethesda game ever made for free.

Also I don't really see him being bullied. It will be many years before he even gets into school. We'll say five years till kindergarten, then even more for grade school and higher up. It won't really matter as the game will be just as old as the people he's going to school with for the most part.

I don't think that being named Dovahkiin will automatically mean that he'll get bullied. Saying it out loud doesn't sound funny. It doesn't sound weak. I can seriously picture myself saying, "Hey, Dovahkiin," at the water cooler all casually. But as for the kids, I doubt anyone is going to bully him because of the name. They'll find something else to pick on.

When I was bullied in school it was because of my terribad allergies and my stuffy nose. Also because I stereotypically kicked ass in school while sucking at gym class as a nerd. My point is this: I haven't heard of anyone getting picked on due to a name... unless it's like... Batman. But let's face it... Gamers are a straw minority in comparison to mainstream. No one knows what the hell Skyrim is unless you game. And no six-year-old is gonna game Skyrim. And if that six-year-old is gaming Skyrim, that six-year-old would go, "DO A SHOUT."

I mean... try making fun of Dovahkiin. Try it right now. "Dork-a-kin?" Doesn't really flow right. "Do-fall-Kim?" Ehh...

That baby...he's just too red. Forget the name, I'd be more worried about him looking like a tomato all his life. Unless it's just the camera, in which case we can go back to worrying about the name.
Have you ever seen a really, really, young baby before?

It doesn't matter if no one knows it's a videogame reference, kids (at least in the US) will just make fun of any name that sounds unusual. It doesn't matter if it sounds "foreign," kids don't give a damn about political correctness.

Honestly, I was mocked for my name and it isn't even that far out of the norm (It's Marshall). And in all honesty, I feel it's better that I learned this side of those people and was separated from them, rather than being an accomplice to their petty cruelties. (I can truly say that if I was a little more "normal" I could have become one of them. And that scares me.)

Hail to thee, new-come member of the Dovah. May you find fire in your soul if not in your breath.
