Why do you think I mentioned bands like Iron Maiden... Clearly I am not "concluding that Black Metal, Death Metal, and all the shitty metal/death/whatever-core" I was stating that said genre's are terrible. I accept that there may be good metal bands out ther today but I don't care to find them as I grew out of metal and into different genre's.
The message I took away from your original post was "Metal was cool back in the early heydey and now all of it is crap", where "all of it" means
enough that finding decent bands is the exception, rather than the rule (like how rap is now and will be for the forseeable future barring a
radical shift in the culture). The subtext to that subtext is the suggestion that most of those 'exceptions' would just be bands that have been around since 'metal was actually good' and therefore 'don't count'.
Which is flat out wrong - music like Maiden's never stopped being made [small](the music press snidely refers to Europe's Power Metal revival as if Europe had ever actually stopped making Power Metal)[/small] and remains popular throughout those parts of the world that are not America or Great Britain. The angry noise? You have to look
significantly harder for that, because in what is already an underground genre,
that's the
underground.
It's highly ironic that Metal's least commercial sub-genres somehow became the 'face' of the genre as a whole, and now lead to the far more prevalent
good bands getting dismissed as outliers in a sea of noisy crap, when really it's the precise opposite - the parts we both think are terrible just get all the attention because they're so much easier to mock.
I can certainly forgive non-metal fans here on the Escapist from falsely concluding the 'extreme metal' sub-genres constitute the bulk of metal though, since 90% of what people here talk about
is that stuff - but that's mostly because people over the age of 20 are a decided minority in these parts.
