Yes, because you failed. Getting a failure condition is still a pretty standard thing. Unless its talking about you failing because of a decision you made 3 hours ago. Then thats probably one of the biggest dick moves I've ever heard.
Did you play the second one? I'd imagine they'll handle it like that, with different numbers of bad decisions giving you a progressively worse ending.
Yes, the end, where you lose, and then just restart and go about it again, making sure you don't lose this time. Realistically, you'd have to suck pretty bad to have gotten the Sheperd Dies ending of Mass Effect 2 - it was a game over screen, just one that still gave you a Trophy.
I don't know if you're trolling or if you simply can't tell the difference. Because there is a big difference in a simple game over screen and this. This isn't something where you fail and start again, it's not a simple "you have died load your last checkpoint" game over screen. It's a possible ending for the game on that will happen depending on your choices. Most games don't have that.

My Shepard has bigger things to worry about than saving the galaxy! Like what Ashley will do to him when she finds out what he's been doing with Miranda!
I actually restarted ME2 when I found out that Ashley was a squadmate in ME3, not mention the fact that she's a Spectre now. I think she would shove Shepard's new glowing stabbymashit straight up my south end if she found out!

Ah, cynicism purged for the day.
What cynicism?

ME2 you didn't even get whole story without buying 3 separate DLC! Wanna bet the number will be higher than 3 for ME3? :)
Including a full nude scene for Tali? ;)
Oh dear god the images! *convulses violently in terror*

I'm simply miffed that the game is going to be focused on Earth. Yes, you can travel the galaxy as usual, but everything is focused on stopping the Reapers from taking Earth. We've saved Earth hundreds of times in the past geniuses, its one of the most common plot points Sci-Fi does. Give us something different, blow the planet up for god's sakes. There's more at stake in the galaxy, but no, it just has to be about Earth right?
Also this. My first thought after ME2 was "I hope to god that they don't center the last game around humanity and Earth." Way to go Bioware. You create this really cool universe and choose to close out the trilogy with another battle for Earth.
Based on the information released thus far, the game starts on Earth. But one of the first things that was mentioned with regards to ME3 was that we'd finally get to visit the Asari, Salarian and Turian homeworlds as they're all invaded simultaneously. Sounds like more than just another battle for Earth IMO.
It is centered around gathering allies to help save Earth. So, yes, it is centered around Earth.

Question: will the Shepard fails ending to ME3 be anything other than an extended game over screen? Because if not, you could just as easily say the marine in Doom fails to defeat the legions hell just because you stopped playing.
I expect it wont be choices you make righ then and there at the end but will be (or hopefully) be affected by choices youve made through out the game and possibly influenced by choices in the other games, meaning it wouldnt be just load a save 10 minutes ago and be more of a i have to replay this and not be an idiot

That sounds interesting and I love Bioware games but EA fucked them over with that Origin bullshit...I was thinking of buying the entire Mass Effect series after 3 hit the shelves but now...I'm sorry Bioware we had a good run. Well at least now I can use the money I was setting aside for something else. Gotta look at the bright side of things sometimes.

I would so love if they took this oportunity to give a gigantic middle finger to everyone who played Renegade.

'So you think it's funny to alienate every ally you could have had and piss of the entire galaxy? Well now you stand alone against the Reapers and they kill you without a second thought. How do you like that you anti-social *****?'

They won't, but I can't shake the feeling that the Renegade ending may be somewhat of an ass pull or otherwise rather horrific in terms of casualties.

A Paragon can call on:

The Rachni
The united Krogan
The Shadow Broker
The Council
The Alliance
Potentially the geth and the quarians, since your actions in ME2 may have been a sign of a wider reconciliation to come.

A Renagade can call on:

The Shadow Broker
Possibly Cerberus, though according to the pre-released facts not likely

Seems a little unmatched, hmm? A Renagade spends every game alientating all their potential allies, so why in the third game would they rally behind Shepard? What possible reason could they have that is not pulled out of the story writer's arse? A paragon Shepard is a hero, a renagade is a dickhead.

It will be very hard to fail, I'm sure. I think the only way to get the ending is to plan and intentionally aim to get it with story decisions made specifically to achieve that end. I don't even know what one would have to do to get Shepard killed in ME2. Might see if I can find that ending on youtube.

Wouldn't it be more of a new if you couldn't lose? And I'm sure it's the same as in ME2, you have to do a full game of stupid chaotic decisions to be able to canonically lose.

A resounding "meh", you had to pick the worst options possible, as well as do like none of the upgrade missions to die in the second game. The path toward failure will be pretty damn obvious because Gears in Space doesn't want you to waste a precious second of that brainpower on the choices you make.

not surprising, really. i mean Mass Effect 2 do a similar thing.

Plus if Origin continues to be a problem, when it comes out, Im just gonna pirate it. As will a lot of people i would imagine. And with all EA games of the future, till Origin disapears or EA at least changes it

I kind of fail to see the point in choices when you are given a red option for clueless asshole, blue option for normal person and rest for neutral. If Mass Effect 2 is anything to go by.

Investing 3 games and potentially 100+ hours into a character's story, only for it all to be in vain if you make the wrong choices- that will give people pause before they try and win with only 60% game completion!

I've got this creeping suspicion that your win/lose ratio will be determined by game completion like it was in ME2, but the coices that you make through the story will determine how many of the big characters die.

And if ME3 is Origin-exclusive for digital distribution, I'll just buy it retail. Problem solved.
