For a fantasy RPG I'd pick either a sword and shield combination or a sword and dagger because two swords only get tangled together.

As for Modern, the AK47 since it's powerful, reliable, and easy to maintain. Or the G36c, since I think it's the coolest Assault Rifle ever.
