When you think about it, though, a level that "flows" is also one that comes to an abrupt halt, either into a wall or off a cliff. Think of Sonic Rush and the Sonic Adventure games; their levels "flowed", but they weren't particularly fun to play through because you were just holding the control stick in one direction and using either twitch reflexes or memorization to jump the platforms or gaps.
Then look at Sonic 2. You've got levels like Hilltop Zone or Mystic Cave where you have to slow down and platform, and those levels were plenty of fun.
