Love people in the thread who blame "Hackers" like they're talking about an organization and not a skill. Don't under any circumstance think of blaming a company for storing every single bit of your security data readily available in a single insufficiently secure place.

Honestly, PSN people. You guys have my deepest condolences.

My parents would freak if they heard about this.

Why do people assume this was Sony's fault? Could they have done more to protect the data? Maybe, I don't know how strong their security is. A breach of security doesn't mean you're lax about it. Damn near every security system is breakable the only factor is time. Do you think Iran's nuclear plants had shit security when it was compromised or do you think the authors of the of the stuxnet worm just knew what the fuck they were doing in regards to exploitation? Governments are breached all of the time and in many cases their security is superior to that of industry and yet they still have breaches.

I never saved my credit card info onto my account, but I have used it to make PSN purchases.
would it still be compromised?

Joke's on them, I have no money to steal.

Maxed credit card for the win!
Ditto. Well, at least now I know why I couldn't log on this weekend. Now I'll just have to wait until Sony gets their heads out of their asses so I can download my Mortal Kombat stuff.

I completely know its the hackers fault but its Sonys gaming online service, you believe it would be secure.

Also I was complaining that they had taken a week to tell people that there information may have been stolen, why did they take this F'ing long? They should have apoligised, explained and admitted their faults and their plans from the start, not hide them like a small boy whos trying to lie to his parents.
I'd imagine that the system would be secure, until, you know, it was hacked. As this man eloquently states it;

I find it funny that people are blaming Sony for having bad security when they most likely have NO IDEA what the security was actually like and how hard it was for the hackers.
That sounds like something the hacker would say. "DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW FRUSTRATING IS WAS FOR ME TO HACK THIS THING ONLY FOR PEOPLE TO THEN TURN TO ME AND SAY 'WELL THAT MUST HAVE BEEN EASY THEN?'.
I cannot tell you how hard I laughed. It really puts things into perspective :D

This is precisely why I'm happy that I took my credit card info OFF my PSN. I ended up purchasing FFVIII by mistake(long story, don't ask) when I didn't want it quite yet. So I took my card info off to stop that from happening again. And now I'm grateful that I did.

Let's see the timeline

1st: Sony sues Geohotz and everyone goes against Sony
2nd: Anon attacks Sony and everyone goes against Anon
3rd: Geo drops out and Anon tries one last ditch effort to feel like they mean something in this fight no one likes anyone
4th: PSN goes down everyone hates Sony and Anon
5th PSN stays down and Anons all like "we did nothing bro!" everyone hates Sony
6th: everyone get's their stuff stolen off of PSN and we go back to everyone hates both sides in the fight

point is if we can put music on a compact disc....
Actually...
6th: Stuff stolen
7th: Sony plays dead for a few days
8th: Sony comes clean about what went down
9th: Somehow there's people defending Sony
Um.. I'm guessing you don't follow PlayStationEU or Playstation on Twitter? I have seen many updates from them mentioning the work they're doing, they didn't KNOW what was taken or HOW. They weren't "playing dead". Hell, they updated even when there wasn't anything to update. It was the Easter holidays. I'm guessing the entire security team/PSN staff were working overtime, away from their own families. Shit like this doesn't just happen. There are "hackers" and there are butt-hurt assholes looking for trouble, with no care for ANYONE.

Seriously, if anyone's blaming Sony for this, you're a fucking idiot. Especially if your PSN details were leaked. Sony didn't leak them, hackers done hacked it, yo.
I still expected more from freaking Sony. I mean, if they don't have the best defenses, then what's left for the rest?

It's funny how Sony fanboys are still defending Sony even though they have been potentially fucked over by not getting this info at least a week earlier when it was available to Sony.

And God help you if you think Geohotz's firmware hacking has anything to do with Sony's network hacking. Even if - if - by some outlandish circumstances this is all Geohotz's fault, the fact that one compromise on the client side can take down an entire network only goes further to show Sony's utter incompetence.

And seriously people, there's a difference between 'hacking' and 'DDOS'ing', so stop blaming Anon without any evidence.
Way to generalize, buddy. I own a 360, not a PS3. When I purchase non-exclusive games, I would buy the 360 version anyway. I happen to own a PSP though and rarely use PSN for PSOne classics and Dissidia 012 DLC.

Yet, I still despise the bastard hacker/s and understand completely how much Sony would be scrambling and toiling away at finding the cause/s. They're human beings. They can't just instantly KNOW what happens to anything. If your PC gets maliciously attacked, you're finding the cause and solution for a loooooooooooooooooooong-ass time. Sony has over SEVEN MILLION (or there abouts, maybe more?) accounts to manage. It's going to take time to find out the cause and solution. They want their facts straight BEFORE reporting anything drastic.

Hackers this, hackers that ... not a one of you (apologies for gross generalisation) seems to know what a hacker actually is and what they do.

Great, I cancelled my card and now I'll be withdrawing money with checks for the next week, thanks Sony! As much as I want to blame Sony in full, there's always the possibility of hacking when using an online service. Even your precious Xbox Live could be brought down (which I've been playing for the last week).

Big ups to Sony for admitting the full severity of the situation, rather than try to cover themselves.

Good on them.

Hmmm PSN goes down the day after Skynet is supposed to take control? Seems a little too much of a coincidence to me. Clearly its gathering funds...

On a more serious note though, this is unfortunate, but no system is 100% secure, if someone wants to get in it they will. Its a fact of the digital age, we just need to find who did it and move on....until the next attack on whoever is next.

There is one device that has direct access to the PSN. Someone allowed people to modify that device in anyway they want. Others were able to grab more access than intended for them to have.

No matter how you look at this, this is a direct result of GeoHotz's actions.

Also to the people who blame Sony, far more important and secure databases are breached all the time. Sony being hacked isn't a one of a kind occurrence that can only be their fault.
