I always wanted a playstation, now i might have to reconsider. Also if it happened to PSN could it happen to Xbox Live?
Very well could, friend.

A hacking happened. Everyone is making a big fart about it for how large the Playstation Network is these days. Who's good or bad in the matter really doesn't matter (unless you feel like having the mental age of a pre-adolescent). Really, how long do you have to be within the environment of the internet to know about the dangers of hacking/cracking? This shit has always been around.

What does matter is what folks need to do to protect themselves in situations like these. A good preemptive would be to change account passwords and credit card information (if used on PSN).

Some people mention the security of Xbox Live, well remember they had the service since the original Xbox days, PSN is new to Sony and they're working on it. I suspect after this they'll be a lot wiser in their security. Besides, sites like Amazon, Paypal, and Facebook have all been the targets of hackers and stolen personal information, nothing is invulnerable, but it's the hacking that gets them to learn.

Aside from that, Sony mentioned there is no real evidence to support the theft of Credit Card information, they are merely erring on the side of caution. Better to be paranoid about it than to shrug and not give a damn.
to bounce off this the difference between stealing a account and the entire PSN is like robbing a bank versus draining Citibank corps funds. PSN is its own private internet, and they just got every single piece of information.

also i do like how everyone mocked sony for the past few years for being so protective with its PS3 hardware.

This could be the Crime of the Century

Wow ... This is just horrendous. They waited a week to tell anyone this, the flippin' idiots ... I dont know how PS3 "fanboys" can even attempt to rectify this. I heard arguments saying that it was "Free" and as such "Shouldnt complain its down" but just because its free doesnt mean people should lose credit card information.

I cant even come up with any idea how Sony are going to make this up to their customers.
Yep, them being hacked is their fault(!)

Good going, Sony.

Your system is about as stable and secure as... something instable and insecure.
Well said! In the words of Cave Johnson: "We're done here".

Am I the only person who's feeling rather calm about all this? Sure, I'm not happy, but A) the few places that share my PSN password are places that aren't worth hacking into (like pop culture chat forums), and B) I regularly check my VISA statement and can quickly rectify any transactions that are unauthorized. Furthermore, what are the odds that I'll even get hacked out of all the information taken?

With vast odds against being hacked and the attention to counter it if I do, I should be fine.

Withholding this on for a whole week? If customer money goes missing within their 'secure server' the litigation will cripple Sony's gaming branch. They'll have to offer their own flesh to pay the compensation charges off.

Oh well, I was looking forward to a PS4...

My only reaction can be this: HOLY SHIT.

I am so happy this isn't Microsoft right now. I feel sorry for the PSN users. I really do. If I was on PSN I'd be freaking out. Call your banks. Get your card numbers changed.
Thanks, at least someone is sympathetic rather than 'LOL SONY SUXXORS'

All I can say to this is:

for all the idiots who say it's Sony's fault for getting hacked, do you think women also deserve to be raped because they dress sexy?

think how stupid you sound....
No, but if they wear a literal sign around their neck that says "please screw me," and don't protest at all while the deed is being done, but then turn around and try to press rape charges after the fact...
yes, because i'm sure sony just loves facing a public relations nightmare, potential loss in billions from fixing costs, to lawsuits.

yeah that makes perfect sense.

I think everyone is over reacting just a little. I changed my credit card account and am now waiting patiently for PSN to come back online so I can get right back to playing.

I am also glad how all of you KNOW this was an easy task to pull off and that Sony completely sucks at security. I don't really understand how you can say that Sony missed this HUGE security hole while this might have been brewing for months for all know.

Information gets stolen everyday. I do not expect anyone to be completely able to block any attack. I believe I heard recently that Best Buy accounts were hacked and email addresses could have been obtained. It is each persons responsibility to pay attention to his or her own accounts when you put something online. Everyone knows the risk you take by signing up for anything online.

Do you realize just how stupid and generalized that statement is? This is by no means an innocent by-standard who is not capable of defending themselves or was pure of all crime. Nor was this even a rape by ANY metaphorical means.

Time and time again sony says it "may have" or "had the potential" of having its data stolen. Thats more of a cat-call or a awkward stare from a male than a rape. "he had the potential to rape me but i dont really know if he did, or if i was even raped"

They stored OTHER peoples data, they are more of a bank than an innocent women. And if a bank gets robbed odds are it wasent protected well enough, or its something major and they should have done something to stop the bleeding 6 days ago. Incompetence is far from Victim in the business world.

Your twisting what happened to the extreme in an attempt to get people to side with you.

In military terms: Charline Tango Foxtrot Delta.

In civi terms: Calm the F*#k down.

Ouch. Condolences to all y'all who use the PSN. Just hoping to bump this to get the message out.

I hope whoever is responsible for this gets found and ripped a new one.

This is why when my current card runs out, I'm not updating my Xbox account with a new one, I'll just use prepaid codes instead. Sure it hasn't happened yet, but who's to say when this particular anon (before anyone starts, the hacker is anonymous, ergo he is an anon. He doesn't need to be affiliated with thee Anonymous to qualify) gets bored with Sony, their not going to turn?

Hope everyone here doesn't get hit too badly.

Personally, I think it's a small group of people who have watched this Geohot business blow up and are using it as cover. People are ass holes like that.

It seems we have gone full circle the 360 when first released randomly over heated now at the end of its life cycle the ps3 network gets hacked.Sorry but they dont seem to have a clue how it happened or who did it.They dont tell anybody whats going on then a week later they announce that private information could have been taken.

I feel really bad for the psn players but what the hell are sony playing at.

Maybe if they put less money into there "motion gimicks controllers" and more into there online secruity this might have not been such a total train crash

Utter and total bullshit with no other intent than to get public support on their side in order to lob another anti piracy salvo and in order to take further measures to further their bait and switch tactic.

Seriously how can anyone be so naive.

This is pretty much the last straw for me. I will not buy another Sony console or other device until this type of garbage is stopped. Voting with my wallet will not make a dent in Sonys agenda, of this I am well aware. However it is still my vote to cast and I will do so.

Seriously Sony, get your act back together and quit playing people.

This... is a disaster.
I don't know if I'm right, but I assume this may have been the single greatest one-time theft of private information in the history of the internet.
At least I didn't have my credit card info on PSN...

I really hope it was all a joke and it was GlaDoS who caused it to go down :(
I don't think I would trust GlaDoS with my personal information any more than I would trust the hackers.

You know, few months ago I was considering getting a PS3, now I'm kinda glad I didn't.
