This had to happen. This latest saga has been brewing for a while, and although it pains me to lose the ability to become a bigger trophy whore than before, i'm glad it's happen.

Nothing in this world changes without a catalyst, and if this ensures a better psn gaming future (providing there is one) then that's got to be a good thing?

All the other companies should be peddling like crazy to instigate changes now... and to all those other systems haters, it may be your system next, so bring the love and understanding of our pain first, just in case you need a shoulder to cry on later.

Phony are essentially saying that they have had a breach, but use words such as 'believe' and 'may'when talking on usage of data on compromised systems, not all systems.

Not sure if anyone has had any details used, which is important.
As people we lose data all the time, to no consequence, so lets not explode quite yet.
And breath out.
Exactly, people need to calm down and realize that there info may be compromised not that it has been. Im honestly blaming fox news cough I mean the escapist for the blatant anti sony spin they have been putting on every one of these articles.
I'm sorry, how else were they supposed to put it?

"PSN, the cornerstone of their entire console, has crashed. But we're fine with that. It's alright, we don't blame you Sony. There there. Come here and have a hug, it'll all feel better..."

Or

"There's a very real possibility that all of the private information that you submitted on PSN may have been stolen. But hey, it's not like we'd expect a company like Sony to be able to look after stuff like this."

You know all these people debating who they think did this should probably just sit back, take a deep breathe, and wait patiently. Of course take all reasonable precautions needed to protect your identity and money but all this arguing and bitching..."it was hackers" or "it was Anon" or "it was Sony" isn't accomplishing anything.
Of course my paranoid side is telling me there may not have been a breach of security at all and this may be a legal/media inspired response to all the support that Sony saw the consumers giving Geohot and/or Anon in order to make people scared and angry at those they supported in order to make it easier for them to inact new iron fisted policies. And that side of me probably won't leave it alone until Sony actually comes out and says who breached their security.

All the 'unauthorized user' and 'external influence'...ect doesn't cut it, to close to what lawyers do with phrases like 'allegedly' and so on...

Thanks GeoHotz. Thanks to you being a fucking cocksucking douchebag, tons of people's personal info has been lost.

Oh wait they have been douchebags the whole time in this case. Nevermind. Fuck you Geohotz for probably causing all this by releasing that code. If not then you certainly encouraged it.
You mind explaining how a hack to run homebrew code on your PS3 enabled the entire security of the PSN to be compromised? Sony's horrendous security is at fault here, not hackers playing homebrew code.
The PSN was obviously prepared for stuff like this to happen before hence no massive issues like this yet.

It wasn't prepared to deal with hackers potentially having the end all be all code that jailbreaks the PS3.
PS3 owners deserve to treat their system like their PC without getting dragged into court
No, they don't get to. Deal with it.

Because a few bad apples spoils the bunch. A sad truth but look what happened here. Blame the people who would exploit it if Sony opened the doors to everyone, not Sony for trying to protect everyone's security.
Yes. they do. It's a computer, people have a right to look into how their computers work at the code level and talk about it. If they want so much control over people's property, then they can charge less for it or lease it for 10 bucks a month.

Just because people make viruses for PCs doesn't mean software engineers should be thrown in prison for figuring out and sharing how the window OS works, and you don't see car companies dragging car enthusiasts into court for cracking their car computer to tweak performance.

So yea, Sony isn't special and they're no different than any other hardware manufacturer. Deal with that. Damn kids are being brainwashed into defending some corporate bully who can't even encrypt their customer data. Not even banks let hackers get away with the entire database and they're hacked all the time.
But on a PC, it's probably my fault that I got a virus, but on the PS3 however, this isn't even remotely my fault.

Wow, shit.

I'm trying to think who would have a motive to do this...GeoHotz is one guy, and pissing off the entire playerbase over a petty squabble with Sony seems ridiculous. The same applies for Anonymous, their digs were with Sony, not the playerbase, unless they're trying to bankrupt Sony or something, or at least dint their sales.

Hmm...

Because you're a security expert and not a random dude on the internets.

And to those saying this had nothing to do with GeoHotz, it might not have had anything to do with him jailbreaking it, but I can almost guarantee it had something to do with that situation. Clearly they have the ability to do it, and just needed the motivation.
"Almost" isn't good enough.
Because as a super expert, and not just a person speculating on an online forum, half thinking aloud. Putting my thoughts out there for others to mull over. No no, you're right, as a person I'm not allowed to speculate. ON THE INTERNET! That'd be wrong.

But hey, I like being treated like I should know everything. If that's what you want to think of me, cool.

Sir we've been hacked!
What they get.... account numbers, ids what?
They got all of it!
What all of the Account information?
No, ALL of it, credit card, ID, address, everything!
*beat*
Get me my brown pants...

This is not going to end well for Sony. Let's hope that that they didn't lose everything.

Oh and the lesson here kiddies is that if you give any data to anyone for any reason there is a chance it will be compromised.
Not really a lesson, how the hell do you suggest we buy anything then?
That's exactly the point! It's about time people realize they're consuming ways are fucked up.

So I have to change all my passwords? Big Deal, I do that every 3 months anyways. It's really not all that panic worthy.

Also People seem to be majorly butthurt about the fact that they can't hack the console they say that you should be able to do whatever you want with your own property, the only thing is that applies only to things that are purely about the system, the second that the network itself (which IS owned by Sony) is involved or could be involved. Sony has the right to do what it pleases. You can mod a car, but you can't mod it so far that it may affect it's safety on the road. Besides, Why would you even want to mod a PS3 like a PC? PC's are already way better for modding than PS3 will EVER be.

No, actually. Just because the PS3 is called "Sony Computer Entertainment System", doesn't make it a "computer". Apple makes computers. Microsoft makes computers. The Xbox 360 is a VIDEO GAME CONSOLE. Not a computer. The PS3 is a VIDEO GAME CONSOLE. Not a computer. The Nintendo Wii is a VIDEO GAME CONSOLE. Not a computer.

Previous console generations were exactly that. Consoles. They played video games. That's what they do. You fuck with that, you're a fucking twat.

You ever think things are better now? That they don't give people permission to do whatever they want?

It only pisses off a very small amount as most people get what they want from the functionality provided. You ever think that maybe the old ways were worse? Sure the people who love customization take a hit but its a small price to pay for the added security.

I'm not going to convince someone that has lived their entire life thinking that freedom is a given when given a new piece of technology but the times have changed.

Perhaps its time to rethink your view that just because you bought a new piece of technology that you don't get the freedom to use it how you see fit because if they gave that permission to people then you'd end up with more cases like this.

I'm not saying anything about getting viruses, I'm saying people dont go to jail for telling others how windows works at code level and how to exploit it to make viruses and wreak havoc. Only people who actually make the virus and use it are the ones who should be punished. Knowledge isn't a crime.

I don't get it, PSN has been working fine for me for the last week. What domain is this affecting, or is it the entire network?

Wait, so "almost guarantee" is now synonymous with "to speculate"? Ok, well, then your speculation isn't good enough.
