It's a good thing I don't use card numbers or my real name or address on XBox Live, PSN, or anywhere on the internet in general. My conspiracy theories have all just been confirmed, and I can smugly sip my White Russian tonight, safe in the knowledge that my paranoia has payed off.

My only real concern is that all my other PS3 brothers and sisters might be in trouble. I hope this doesn't have the effect of making all the XBox fanboys and girls jump up and scream "AHA! PROOF THAT THE PS3 SUCKS!"

Gits. :p

Oh lawd, I needed that lol. Thanks for the LRR reference! :D Antarctica, right?
This thread finally has found comic relief!
If anyone did make a fake name and address, shits gonna go down in a silly way.

Well, the first hit from that was certainly enlightening to me: even the hackers are scrambling to figure out who did this.

http://www.ps3hax.net/

Edit: Holy crap, they've got Dosbox, Windows 95, and Windows 3.1 running on the PS3! This is why I love hackers.

Edit edit: And that Rebug firmware that was causing so many problems? The latest update enables users to get back on the general network, and the update post actually lists the fact that it was initially dev network only as a problem. People really need to lay off the homebrew community here.

Not sure how many people will read/believe it, but I feel it should be posted.

That's interesting. You make something of a valid point, but one could still argue that the hacks may not have been spread and shared as rapidly and much as the Hotz hack was. One could also question the quality of these hacks, whether (and if so, how quickly and easily) sony patched it.

Nevertheless, good show. I stand corrected.

Good going, Sony.

Your system is about as stable and secure as... something instable and insecure.
How about as stable and secure as a PS3 users bank account?

Sony just got burned.

Though I'm pretty sure from the flaming they've received they are already well and truly on fire.

Sadly, it's happening everywhere. My xbox playing buddies have been teasing me about it for days now.

I like how this thread has only been up about 6 hours and already has over 800 comments. The rage here is palpable, and as someone who doesn't own a PS3, I sympathize with you all.

My CCN has been stolen twice in the past year; fortunately, my bank caught the fraudulent transactions quickly and I wasn't left holding the bag. In my case, PC viruses were the likely culprit, but I would strongly advise anyone affected to cancel their credit cards; especially if your bank doesn't cover you against fraudulent transactions. If you used a DEBIT or CHECK card to pay for your PSN account, then you should definitely cancel those cards; they're rarely covered against fraud.

Also, you might want to get hold of your free credit report from the major credit bureaus in a month or two, just in case.

I wouldn't be surprised if this breach is at least partially related to Geohot and his team cracking the PS3. Having the system's key available may have allowed whatever crackers are responsible to use a PS3 to get into the PSN files. Still, I doubt he was directly involved.

I wouldn't be too hard on Sony. This is just how good some hackers are. Your personal information is always at risk; it's just a matter of when and where someone will be lucky enough to break in and get it.

Really. Who did then? And how come nobody heard about it? Did they actually allow for homebrew and hacking to the extent that hotz did? Enlighten me.
Nobody? You seem to think very highly of yourself. Several people, including myself have been hinting, suggesting, and outright telling you and others that your accounts of history are wrong, as well as your speculative correlations.

By the way, uh.......... what triggered most of the console hacking was Sony doing something extremely stupid, which was removing features from the system for absolutely no reason. If you actually paid attention when it was first going down, the hacker groups said "we didn't realize PS3 security was so bad because we never tried to get around it before". They said it was extremely easy and fast to hack, compared to other consoles.

Also, that other article you linked to is not relevant. It even says so.

Good ol' hackers. Fighting for your consumer rights against the evil corporation that takes away your rights...

Oh wait they have been douchebags the whole time in this case. Nevermind. Fuck you Geohotz for probably causing all this by releasing that code. If not then you certainly encouraged it.
lol... blaming geohotz

when will you wake up out of your fanboyism and try to hold sony accountable

See, while I can understand that, I would imagine that the first thing to think of when dealing with a security breach would be user info being compromised. So, more of a 50-50 thing going here.
