I made it to page 8 before the wonderful douchebaggery made my vision blur with rage.

I'm actively wishing cancer on so many people since this happened, it's insane.

Now I'm off to wonder what someone could use my info for. My mailing address is a PO box that is full, my credit card is 15 bucks from the limit, and if I can't use my info for a benefit, chances are no one else can either.

Not that I'm actually expecting anything to happen.

Oh wait they have been douchebags the whole time in this case. Nevermind. Fuck you Geohotz for probably causing all this by releasing that code. If not then you certainly encouraged it.
You mind explaining how a hack to run homebrew code on your PS3 enabled the entire security of the PSN to be compromised? Sony's horrendous security is at fault here, not hackers playing homebrew code.
The PSN was obviously prepared for stuff like this to happen before hence no massive issues like this yet.

It wasn't prepared to deal with hackers potentially having the end all be all code that jailbreaks the PS3.
BUT Sony KNEW Geo released the code that jailbreaks the PS3. They should have known what that code could be used to do and swiftly beefed up the security on their most important piece of PS3 infrastructure.
After all I've said in this thread, you do raise a very good point. I still stand by what I said about the hackers and why they're the first people to blame, THEN Sony.

But yes, they SHOULD have prepared for any further onslaught, especially user account details. That I won't contest.

I'm wondering what this is going to do to the PS3 and all current and future games Sony has. This is an issue that is going to HURT the company. I wouldn't be surprised if they tapped out at this year's E3. Unless they get this fixed and fast I don't see many games or systems selling.

It's a good thing I don't use card numbers or my real name or address on XBox Live, PSN, or anywhere on the internet in general. My conspiracy theories have all just been confirmed, and I can smugly sip my White Russian tonight, safe in the knowledge that my paranoia has payed off.

My only real concern is that all my other PS3 brothers and sisters might be in trouble. I hope this doesn't have the effect of making all the XBox fanboys and girls jump up and scream "AHA! PROOF THAT THE PS3 SUCKS!"

Gits. :p
Sadly, it's happening everywhere. My xbox playing buddies have been teasing me about it for days now.
One thing those people need to keep in mind is that Sony is a primarily a company that makes TVs and stereo systems. The reason XBox will never get hacked it that it's parent company is fucking MICROSOFT. Hell, the computers Sony used to make the PSN were probably made by Microsoft.

Yes, it seems that Sony needed better security, but blaming them for this is like blaming a person for having their house robbed because they didn't bar the doors tightly enough. There is no way Sony wanted this, and the fault will ALWAYS lie with the hackers.
You put too much faith in microsoft, my friend. XD

I thought XBOX (the console, not XBL) gets hacked all the time. And microsoft hardware is hardly reliable.

That's the one thing that's still up in the air. If they ignored it then that's their fault but I highly doubt that they just did nothing. But preventing an attack after such information had been given out is easier said then done.

lol... blaming geohotz

when will you wake up out of your fanboyism and try to hold sony accountable
lol... blaming Sony...

when will you wake up out of your blind hatred and try to hold his actions accountable?
Because he wasn't found to have done anything wrong legally, because the case never came to trial. Therefore, he didn't break the law (assuming you follow the doctrine of innocent until proven guilty).

Plus, I'd like to see your evidence that Geohotz, Anon, or anyone else like that had anything to do with this. Otherwise, you are verbally communicating out of your rectal passage.
He released the code online to these people who hacked for the personal info. That is not up for debate.

The hackers used modded custom firmware on their PS3's that wouldn't have been able to get online with that kind of illegal authority without that code. By releasing that code Geohotz definitely allowed this to happen. Just like Sony had predicted. Sure he settled out of court but that was just how the judicial system works. The damage was done and Sony didn't need to bankrupt the guy for everything he owned and after this, I wouldn't blame em.

I'm REALLY glad I've never bought anything off of the PSN store, only XBLA. I was considering buying FFIX the other day, too.

Not that we're even sure that credit card numbers are in danger, I'm just glad I don't have to worry about it. >.>;

So what you're saying is that the court case brought more problems than Hotz did before the case, right?

If that's what you mean, then I somewhat agree. I'd think it was a combination of the two events. (The hack+the case)
I think we're pretty much on the same page. In the interest of full disclosure, I personally don't feel GeoHot did anything wrong, and since the courts also determined he did nothing illegal, then as far as I'm concerned his hands are clean. Even Anon's sweaty palms are clean (simple DDOS is not illegal unless you're using a hijacked botnet). Until Sony can prove actual damage has been done, I can't even find a real villian here to investigate for cause, just smoke and mirrors and shoddy reporting.

Hah... Sucks to be other people right now. I stay away from all that PSN/XBL business personally.

Side note: It's amazing to see how fast people turn on hackers.

*hacker breaks into Sony website*
Person: Yeah! Awesome! Stick it to those corporate whores!
*hacker brings down company network*
Person: Cool! Wreck as much shit as you can!
*hacker accesses public records*
Person: Umm... What are you doing man? I'm on your side!
*hacker steals credit card information*
Person: JESUS CHRIST SONY! WHY DIDN'T YOU STOP THIS?
*hacker buys a yacht*
Person: Can... I come for a ride?
Hacker: No.

In your quest to support the little guy against the major corporation, you put your faith in scum and have been predictably kicked in the dick.

It's kind of like an inverse Star Wars prequel situation, where Emperor Palpatine (Sony) was garnering power from the senate (users). Only in this version, the senate endorsed their power away from Palpatine and gave it to a **** named Jar Jar Binks (hacker) who predictably abused it and fucked everyone over without prejudice.

You should call me M. Night Shyamalan because:

YOU DESERVE THIS.

Hehehehe.

Yeah, okay, good point, Sony are not to blame because the same thing could've happened to Microsoft, too.

Only it didn't, so poor unlucky Sony, I guess.

Oh, wait, no, that's blatant white-knighting and it makes no sense.

In my city I've met a lot of guys my age that I've never seen before over the last couple days. They say they're out because the PSN is down.

Its going to be hard for Sony to recover from this. No way their customers are going to look at them the same way. They are going to do a lot of serious ass kissing and repgorgramming of their database before people can trust them again, make sure its much more secure. Otherwise Sony as a gaming platform could be crushed.

All across the globe, sensitive user data has been stolen from the Playstation Network. Sony is calling it "hacking," but a more alarmist name would be...Cyber Pandemic Information Rape.

Sorry, this is serious, but I just can't help myself. I hope this whole thing gets sorted out, so we can find out who we should direct the remainder of our hatred at (besides the hackers, and Sony in general).

Yeah it is. That's a big part of why I think they're looking for someone, anyone, to blame right now. No matter how they got here, leaving the entire customer database unsecured is a massive breach of consumer trust, and as a publicly traded company that just can't be good. Couple that with the idea that PS3's have always been sold at a loss, and it's not a pretty picture.

People, seriously, this kind of shit is happening too often now. Big comapnies have to be sent a message that they MUST ABSOLUTELY GUARANTEE the privacy of any and all personal info that they store, OR THEY SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO HAVE IT.

How much longer are you just going to let the companies away with this kind of thing, time and time again? They just mutter 'sorry' and walk away.... It's about time they were sued in to oblivion.
Nah nah nah that won't work... we should sue them into fallout :) (couldn't resist sorry)

OT:......................................bummer...........................thank you xbox.

I have to agree, This COULD have happened to microsoft, But it didnt.. Why? Luck? I think not, Any company COULD be hacked, but its only the ones with shit security measures that do end up getting hacked. This is compleatly, Totally, 100% all sonys fault, Some could say you could blame the hackers, and yes, they are clearly assholes, But all they had was the opportunity, it was sony who provided them with this opportunity, and i for one am not happy at all.

Man I'm glad my PS3 is a paperweight and that I've never entered any kind of credit card info on PSN. For those of you who have...man I hope nothing bad happens to you. Good luck.
